appalachia is devastated. towns i loved, towns i visited all the time, are gone. not damaged, GONE. they are leveled to the ground. there is nothing left but rubble and ruin. people are dead. appalachia is poor to begin with and relies on tourism for a lot of its income, and multiple of those tourist locations are just...gone.

my town is okay, but it's flooded and wrecked. trees are blocking all but one way out of our neighborhood. power lines are hanging limp in the roads. we've been without power for over 24 hours and will continue to be without power for likely another 24+. disabled people and poor people are GOING to die from this. gods save appalachia.

All the fucking Cortana, bing, copilot, and recall stuff is the result of a company that has expanded to the limit of its ability to expand by conventional means.

Because profit has to always increase, companies which have attained monopoly status have to turn to increasingly tenuous and speculative means of increasing profit.

Microsoft slams its own dick in the car door over and over because they can’t (by the logic of corporate America) keep doing the same thing they do well (for a given quantity of “well”) because that will not increase profits.

Stable profits are worse than losing money in the modern economy. If you’re losing money you can spin it as “loss leading” (not what it means! But that doesn’t matter) or “investing in our future.” This is the Uber model.

But Microsoft has been around too long and is too established a player for it to be plausible to stockholders. What Microsoft has to do, then, is dominate every single new technology, which they are fundamentally unable to do because they’ve been the only player in their home market for 35 years.

If Microsoft had been forced to actually compete on the open market, they would have had to actually adjust themselves to meet the desires and requirements of the public, and they wouldn’t be trying to increase their stock price year over year by loading your PC with spyware.

a few years back my car insurance company offered me a discount if i stuck a dongle in my car that would tell them how i drive (specifically reporting hard accelerations and stops), with a base discount of 10% even if i drive like a madman up to 40%ish if i drive like a grandma. and of course naturally my first thought was "huh i bet i could make something running off an Arduino that filters hard brakes and accelerations out of the incoming data stream to get that 40% discount" and i got as far as looking up OBD2 protocols before realizing that that would just be insurance fraud. yes im an engineer raised by two engineers how could you tell

Israel is now carrying out another massive terrorist attack in Lebanon. Similar to the pager attack yesterday, Israel is targeting electronic devices and making them explode all over the country:

Reuters news agency reported, citing both a security source and an eyewitness, that the devices involved in Wednesday’s explosions were portable radios, unlike the pagers that were attacked the previous day. Al-Mayadeen reported that the devices, apparently ICOM V82s, detonated, and “due to the devices containing highly flammable lithium batteries, the explosions were severe.” “The explosions caused massive fires in cars, motorcycles, apartments, and stores all over Lebanon,” the report added.

Several residential buildings and shops are on fire. Nine people have been killed so far, and hundreds more are wounded.

People with family in Lebanon are now receiving texts and calls from their loved ones telling them not to worry if they don't hear from them for a few days, as they're scared their phones might be rigged with explosives.
