My Atla/ tlok hot takes:
Suki is a better non bender fighter than Sokka and people glaze him too much.
Zuko was NOT stronger than Azula by the end of the show she was just nerfed by mental health issues.
Aang did NOT master all 4 elements by the end of the show. He mastered water and air. Earth and fire “still needed work” as Toph and Zuko say.
Katara and Aang could’ve been better written as a ship.
Ozai is a pretty weak villain when you compare him to most other villains and quite one dimensional too. I know it’s a kids show but Azula was at least given more depth.
Azula isn’t a complete monster and people forget she was a child brought up in awful conditions with her father influencing her to be violent. She could be redeemed but she doesn’t want to be.
Korra is stronger than Aang in Water, Earth and fire bending but Aang has the edge with air and also spiritual bending. And even then Korra in her show did master spirit bending too but I’d still say Aang is the most spiritual avatar.
Mako is a better fire bender than Zuko.
Korra’s team isn’t weak she just doesn’t have prodigy’s and her show actually centres her as the main character.
Korrasami is the best ship of that show.
Zutara isn’t a toxic ship, and it’s weird how many people hate on it in general.
Katara wasn’t “just a healer” in tlok she was Korra’s water bending master. She didn’t fight because she was 86 years old.
Aang wasn’t a bad father he was just a slightly absent one and favoured Tenzin due to missing the air nation and wanting to restore his culture.
Korra losing the past lives wasn’t her fault and is an allegory to rape.
Yes Korra is immature and so is Aang, because they are both children.
Korra’s villains were literally evil so yeah she had the worst time of it.
If you call Korra a Mary sue or a whore you’re a misogynistic asshole.
Tlok is good but people refuse to watch it because of nostalgia over Atla. Then got upset when it wasn’t exactly the same and Aang wasn’t there enough. Bro the show is about Korra not Aang that’s why.
Every avatar makes mistakes and sometimes power scaling and comparison is ridiculous.
Kyoshi isn’t brutal or mean spirited. If you read her book she is a scared kid who is forced to make difficult choices. And everything she does is to protect people. Yangchen is actually more brutal canonically.
I’d rather shows that don’t centre Aang anymore as I want new content.
Season 1 of Atla is boring to me.
Season 2 of tlok isn’t bad but people are just salty over past lives thing.
Aang kissing Katara without consent is as weird as Korra doing it to mako but again…yall misogynistic.
Aang didn’t grow much in his own show whereas Korra’s whole worldview changed and her maturity grew. That’s why Korra’s journey is my favourite.
Korra didn’t lose to Kuvira because she’s weak she was going through a mental block. She easily beats her in the mech suit.
Korra is canonically the strongest avatar. Not because every avatar is stronger than the last, Kyoshi is one of the strongest too, but because of her feats. She opened a spirit portal by redirecting spiritual energy and fought Zaheer while poisoned and half dying.
Suki was an interesting character but was just seen as Sokkas girlfriend.
Sokka is misogynistic in the beginning of the show due to growing up within the strict culture of the water tribe.
Aang is wiser and more mature than Zuko. It’s weird when Zutara shippers use this as a point when Zuko is hot headed and Aang is calmer. So no…Zuko is not more mature because he is older. He acts just as, if not more, immature most of the time.
Iroh and Azulas mother could have done more for Azula. She was only a kid and she could have been redeemed given the chance.
Without Toph, the gang is quite…dull. That’s why from season 2, the show picks up.
Aang being a pacifist was both a good and bad thing. Every avatar leaves messes for the future one to clean up but by not killing Yakone or the red lotus Korra was given awful enemies that no teenager should have to face.
The female avatars are more interesting than the male ones.
The fire avatars, ie Roku and Szeto are worse than the water ones, Kuruk and Korra.
Korra was the only avatar who did her job properly and created a world of balance between humans and spirits. She was forced to destroy it because once again the humans messed up somehow. So she destroyed the world in order to save it.
The resetting of the avatar cycle made sense and I liked that narrative choice.
I could honestly go on…and my point is though that the avatar fandom seem to have really reductive takes that are popular. Because half of these shouldn’t be unpopular at all. I wrote all of this really quickly, so I’m sorry for the grammar mistakes.
