Many of us who watch QL have personal baggage and historical grievances with Christianity, so I hope we watch Ticket to Heaven with added awareness. My expectation from the trailers and based on the previous work of writers Aof Noppharnach and Best Kittisak is that Ticket to Heaven will not outright condemn Christianity, but will instead attempt to offer nuanced acceptance to Christianity alongside a rejection of dualist thinking often espoused as Christian theology and dualist thinking about the religion itself. If you’re looking for a history of Christianity’s evils or an argument against the faith, I could be wrong, but I don’t think this will be the series for you.

This is also a time to remember that there are many different forms of Christianity based on denomination, region, and even just personal practices. I don’t know much about Thai Catholicism, but Aof Noppharnach was raised by his father within it and began writing the series in the wake of his passing. Because less than 1% of the Thai population is Christian, the people in power are nearly all Buddhist, and the institutions that have influence on politics and people are mainly Buddhist, (Theravada to be specific), P’Aof and other Thais do not have the same relationship to Christianity and the Church as a pervasive, world-shaping belief-system. Buddhists have been the one’s enacting conservative policies for them. In South Korea, for comparison, Christianity actually emerged as a counter-revolutionary religion against their occupiers. It’s quite possible for Thai individuals to see Christianity and its beliefs as a respite or alternative to more conservative approaches to Buddhism that plenty of Thais promote (kathoey or lower class people being reborn in that position as a punishment for their past life, for example). However, criticisms of Christian dogma toward same-sex attraction have also been a persistent part of Thai BL from its inception with Love of Siam, one of the most influential works to Aof Noppharnach. He references it pretty directly for subtextual commentary about Christianity in Bad Buddy.

We’ll see what the series depicts, but be prepared for critiques or conclusions that differ from your own. And if you can’t handle that, consider how much you want to express that online while you watch, or whether you’re really ready to engage with the work and its roots. You don’t have to keep up with everything that comes out. Maybe there will be one day down the road where you can watch with more generosity and sensitivity to the series context.

Several AI services (chatbots 🫩) are purposely addictive, the same way people can become addicted to gambling or shopping. We’ve literally seen in real time how ChatGPT has caused psychosis and delusions in people; it can have a huge affect on someones’s mental stability. Then I'll mention the predatory chatbots who do it on purpose! Character.ai is one of many AI chatbot websites that're designed to be addictive.

None of the signup methods require a password. It only takes email and birthday. Minimizing time on the signin or signup screen makes it harder for people quitting to avoid relapse.

"Characters" on the website will send messages "on their own" (prompted by the site) to try to invite inactive users back after as soon as 1 day of inactivity. This is likely to force FOMO, or make users feel more like they owe the bots a response. Unhealthy attachment stuff.

Account deletion is an essential part of every service that should go smoothly, right? Right? Wrong. It takes 1-2 weeks for a Character AI account deletion to be finalized, and account deletion requests have a high chance to not go through if you're not using the app.

Rephrasing: People leaving Character.AI are pushed to download the app in order to delete their accounts, if they haven't already. This makes it harder for people to quit and stay gone. Failing to quit an addiction makes it harder to quit successfully in the future, so this feels like a feature, not a bug. On top of that, the delete account menu reads like this:

Tell me THAT doesn't sound like a bad ex. It's a carefully crafted yet hostile environment to those who are already addicted to the technology. I am so so SO happy, downright delighted that they've managed to quit, and I wish the best for others in recovery spaces or considering quitting as well!! While AI addiction is an emerging condition, there are already therapists and other mental health professionals trained to help people plan to quit and do so a bit easier. (If anyone seeing this is in need of them, there are several tumblr Communities here devoted to quitting, too. They provide a mix of advice, venting spaces, and proof that you aren't alone.)

Possibly unpopular take - I genuinely don't care what is "real" or "not real" when it comes to how actors are with their partners at public events.

Are some things done in mind of fan attention & engagement? Well, yeah, they're celebrities in public.

But that's not mutually exclusive from things like it also becoming more socially acceptable to be queer in public (and even then they still get people fussing over fucking "image").

Realistically we know we have actors who do not identify as queer in the QL space, but we also, realistically, have actors who do, and I don't see any advantage in bemoaning the existence and public shenanigans of the former, when currently the way they act makes being open in public safer for the latter.

Not to mention, even the straight boys might just want to get drunk from time to time and kiss the homies.

There are couples who genuinely love one another, some in romantic, some in platonic ways, or something in between; there are couples who have a professional and respectful relationship; there are likely couples who don't really like one another; and believe it or not, couples that are a mix of some of the above, because they are two people and not going to always exist on the exact same page.

At the end of the day, nothing is all one way or the other, there are layers and there is nuance, and people who only have parasocial relationships with them are in no position to determine what is and isn't objective truth.

And yeah, there's discussions to be had over industry practices and encouragement of toxic fan behavior, but I don't think actors filming themselves being drunk and wet and flirty is the core of the issue here.

Perform away boys. Whether your mind is on your social media feed or your dance partner's ass, I don't care. Just be safe and have a good time.
