On a different note: Tumblr is incredibly unprofitable right now. Differently from most (all?) social media platforms, Tumblr does a terrible job at collecting your personal information and selling you targeted ads. This is definitely something I like: I hate surveillance capitalism.

Nevertheless, running a website costs real money, and if you like this place you should consider buying the ad-free subscription.

That's something I did as soon as it became available, since I love this website and I hate targeted ads. The mere fact that they're allowing this is somewhat extraordinary, that's what I'd like the internet to be (something closer to Wikipedia and AO3 than to Facebook, with their creepy ads, engagement-maximization algorithms and privacy invasions).

I really hope we'll keep the platform up for at least a few years, since this is the only online platform where I don't feel I'm made to be angry all the time, just to keep me glued to the screen and sell more ads.

maybe this is not my place to say because I am monolingual, and I'm sure it's part of a larger, more nuanced discussion about visibility and accessibility on the internet, but I think it'd be cool if people posted in their native languages more instead of in english. I see people do it way more on other platforms than on tumblr which is almost exclusively in english

El problema es, como bien has dicho, la accesibilidad y la visibilidad.

Tumblr en concreto es muy anglocentrista y un gran número de los usuarios no habla más que inglés. Si quieres que tus cosas lleguen a gente con gustos u opiniones similares, escribirlo en inglés asegura que la gente por lo menos lo pueda leer. Suma a esto el hecho de que bastantes series y tal son originalmente de habla inglesa (y a veces ni se traducen a tu lengua madre), lo que crea un fandom principalmente angloparlante.

Más allá de eso, también hay que tener en cuenta las diferencias culturales que surgen entre fandoms de distintos idiomas. Por ejemplo, durante mucho tiempo el fandom de Vocaloid angloparlante y el hispanohablante han chocado con respecto a temas como la piratería. En ocasiones es complicado manejar estas expectativas, y si sabes varios idiomas, peor incluso.

A mí me gustaría subir cositas en español y encontrar a gente que comparta mis gustos, pero en Tumblr en concreto es casi imposible. Tumblr ya es de por sí mucho más «nicho» en espacios hispanohablantes que otras RRSS como TikTok o Instagram, y si tus intereses no son muy populares, despídete.

La lingüística de los espacios de fans también está hipercentrada en el inglés. No es una pareja, es un ship; no es un universo alternativo, es un AU; no es destripar, es hacer spoiler, etc. Incluso las siglas: en español es LGTB, pero lo que sueles ver es LGBT. Parece una tontería, pero esta disonancia cognitiva hace que resulte muchísimo más complicado hablar en tu propio idioma en un fandom. Por no hablar de las innumerables referencias a posts o a memes... en inglés todo, por supuesto. Como te atrevas a hacer cualquier referencia cultural no inglesa, no te entiende nadie. Pierde la gracia.

Casi todo esto se puede achacar al imperialismo cultural estadounidense. El inglés es útil para comunicarse con gente de todo el mundo, pero su omnipresencia sirve de barrera para todos los demás idiomas. Quizás habría que reflexionar un poco sobre por qué coño el resto del mundo tiene que tragarse años de clases de inglés para hablar del juego que le gusta en una red social mientras muchos angloparlantes no se dignan ni a meter un texto en un traductor automático y prefieren pasar de largo.

Esto me molesta bastante. Especialmente el deseo de traducción. Es cierto que soy un sitio educativo, pero cada vez que trato de hablar con otras personas en mi entorno de entretenimiento no saben lo que estoy diciendo cuando hablo en español.

Y luego me preguntan por qué considero el aprendizaje del español algo serio. Es porque me lo siguen quitando en conversaciones casuales.

SIMPLE SYRUP SIMPLE SYRUP SIMPLE SYRUP

I got some REALLY AWESOME local strawberries from my feed mill, but I absolutely could not eat the quantity of strawberries I got before they would have gone bad and the birds are not huge fans of strawberries. So instead of wasting the last 8 or so, I jam-packed this little container with strawberries, added an equal weight of white sugar, and stuck it in the fridge for about a day and a half.

The sugar leaches the juice/water content from the strawberries and creates a saturated, thin syrup (lower sugar = thinner, more watery, higher sugar = thicker, more like maple syrup). As you can see, the container is not jam-packed with strawberries, they have considerably shrunk in size, as all their delicious, delicious juices are now trapped in a fucking fantastic fresh simple syrup.

I will be using this on my ice cream, and possibly in some soda or lemonade. Theoretically it could be used in anything you'd put a liquid sweetener in, like coffee or cocoa, or if thick like this could be drizzled on any food you want to add strawberry flavor to.

I live near a strawberry farm and they sell their seconds (stuff that supermarkets won't buy but are perfectly delightful) for so so cheap and so every year we make a giant batch of this in a jar the size of my torso with a few kilos of strawberries.

What we do is slice the strawberries to increase their surface area, and put in layers of strawberries and sugar. We stir once or twice over the next day to make sure the sugar that sinks to the bottom is given a chance to contact the liquid, and it's done when no more sugar will dissolve in, and the strawberries are all floating near the top.

We then scoop the strawberries off the top, drain the jar into containers (freeze some), and run the sugar sediment at the bottom through a dehydrator to make strawberry sugar.

The slices of strawberry are perfect for adding to baking (we make many strawberry tarts) because they have had a lot of their moisture removed so don't make the baking soggy, and they are coated in the syrup!

OOOOOO strawberry sugar sounds amazing, I might have to break out the dehydrator for that. Just a regular dehydrator, presumably with the sugar sediment on some kind of small dish (my dehydrator is plastic with holes so it wouldn't be able to sit on that bare)?

I was just going to mash up the strawberries to put over my ice cream since there's only a few this time, but that's a really good idea to use them for baking. Do you use them straight then immediately, or preserve them for use over time somehow?

it’s sooo funny when rude customers encounter employees who can deny them service for the first time.

i was working at a little cafe where I could deny service over bad behavior, harassment etc. & mask mandates had just ended a week before & already people were being weird about me still wearing mine—an N95, the kind shaped kinda like a duckbill.

so this man walked in, looked at me sooo scathingly, laughed at me, and said “damn. never known a woman to choose…practicality over looks.”

And I just said, “oh. you can go, you’re not getting a drink.” And he said, “what???”

One summer I was running ferry rides across a lake so people could see the waterfalls without walking 6 miles when a guy snapped my bra strap as he was boarding the boat.
