Why sand is bad for snakes.

- if not cleaned regularly it harbours bacteria that cause scale rot and Respiratory infections.

- it gets under the scales and causes irritation to the skin

- it causes impaction if ingested *( sticks to wet food items if fed on sand)

- can cause issue with deification and colacal prolapse *( when a snake gose to the toilet they push out the soft part of their colaca a bit, sand particles stick to this and can cause the snake irritation, the sand causes tiny abrasions that in turn can get infected)

No Australian species of snake *(python , colubrid or elapids) Should be kept on sand.

The argument of “but in nature …” Is a poor one and is invalid the second you keep an animal in captive conditions. It is your duty of care to provide for the NEEDS of that animals safety and wellbeing, not what is visually appealing to you.

That and in the wild , nature is NOT comprised of only ONE type of substrate.

There are very few species that are truly adapted to living on sand.
