For some inexplicable reason, my impulseSV stream streak in Twitch broke. I know that doesn’t sound like a big deal, but it was at 96 streams and so close to hitting 100. I was determined to hit 100. It was still going on Wednesday, and I watched both the Hermitcraft stream and the GIGGS D&D live, I didn’t miss either one, and usually if someone streams twice you only have to catch one of them.

Admittedly, I had other streams going during the GIGGS D&D, but Impulse was my main one this time, the one I had open and unmuted. There should be absolutely no reason for why my streak broke on Wednesday. I literally got viewer gift points throughout both streams.

And I didn’t even get an actual notification about missing anything. I just logged onto Twitch today for the phasmo stream (a little late admittedly) and got the notification that I had 24 hours to watch a clip or vod or my stream would break from 2 days ago. My streak was perfectly fine Wednesday.

I've got a lot of thoughts on Session Eight that I'll probably have to chew on for a while and post about over time, but I'll leave you guys with this observation:

We saw in Session Seven that Max Blunder's story is about charting his own path and proving his strength apart from the circus that raised him. I think Impulse intended a similar trajectory for Bro Dude. The debrief at the end of his stream reveals a lot about his plans for this character; plans to have him prove he's not a weakling to the strict family that raised him. But the dice have a mind of their own and tell a different story, and I think the moral of Broghini's tale is actually this:

His strength is in his friends.

Think about it. How was he able to face his fears and defeat the monster that haunted his nightmares ever since he was a child? Not on his own. Not by soloing it in a blaze of glory. Not by cutting it to ribbons with a great axe. He actually missed a lot of his shots and dealt very little damage over the course of the encounter.

He won because he grabbed Max's spiritual weapon and took a swing at the Displacer Beast. He won because Mr. Wizard foretold his success. He won because Ruby kept throwing daggers to "loosen the lid on the jar", and Mr. Wizard pierced the worm creature with a Mind Spike, and Max cast Command and halted it in place.

This doesn't mean that Bro is weak. It means that his strength lies in a different place than his culture expected it to be.

Dwarven culture, as Impulse has established it, values physical strength and hardiness and combat prowess. All of those are good things, but that's not a complete picture of what strength is. It's overlooking strength of the spirit. Of connection. Of community. Of cooperation and togetherness. As a consequence of elevating the individual, it forgets the power of the collective. As a consequence of elevating the physical, it forgets the power of the soul.

Dwarven culture is, in a way, an exaggerated caricature of modern American expectations towards men and boys, especially at the time that Impulse was growing up. Now, I don't wanna psychoanalyze him too much here (she said, lying, because she loves to psychoanalyze him), but there's a non-zero chance in my mind that Impulse—gentle, sensitive, nerdy, and not always fitting perfectly into the stereotypical masculine mold—might be working through a little something here through this character, whether he realizes it or not.

The point of Bro's story is not to become strong in the way that his parents and his brother expected him to. The point of Bro's story is to realize he is already strong. It is to shed the myopic perception of a narrow-minded culture and realize that the value he brings to the world lies not in how much he can lift and the things he can kill, but in the connections he's forged and the good things he can cultivate.

In short, it's not the size of his biceps that counts. It's the strength of his heart.

(Is that cheesy? Yes. But let’s be honest, I’m talking about a character named Bro Dude. It’s been cheesy from the very beginning.)

He'll become physically strong and kill a lot of things along the way, of course. That's the way D&D goes. But it's not lost on me that the weapon he used to deal his first blow to his greatest fear was not one from his ancestral home, and not the one given to him by a fae king, but the one conjured by his friend and battle companion.

Symbolically, it is friendship that gave him strength. It is friendship that gave him clarity. It is friendship that destroyed fear.

There's something incredibly powerful about that.

thinking about how mumbo is so endlessly and effortlessly appreciative of his fellow hermits when it comes to their builds, their play style, and their points of view. his compliments always seem incredibly heartfelt and he brings an infectious curiousity to his videos in regards to why and how the hermits are doing what they're doing. I love that it's not enough for him to incorporate his interests into his videos when it comes to photography, he wants to share that genuine joy with us and them. I often come away from his videos feeling a sense of wanting to make a more conscious effort to be grateful and thoughtful of the people and world around me.

Research: Understanding MCYT Boundaries

During my time in mcyt fandom, I've watched as the fandom's perception of creator boundaries has grown and shifted into a cornerstone of our fandom, and yet we don't actually have any good data on how the fandom as a whole perceives them outside of discourse posts.

The goal of this unofficial study NOT to make a value judgement on whether creator boundaries should be respected - it is to understand how the fandom currently perceives and interacts with them.* Is respecting creator boundaries important to you? Has your favorite creator made a boundary list or spoken about it on stream? Do you find some boundaries acceptable and others not? Have you ever been the target of hate for engaging with boundary-breaking content? Whether you think boundaries should always be respected or you think they're being used as tools of censorship, I want to hear from you. What are boundaries, and why do they matter so much to us?

* Why I think this data is important to collect: The idea for this survey came to me almost a year ago, and I started developing it around February of this year. I’ve spoken with dozens of people about this topic with diverse opinions, read and catalogued hundreds of tumblr posts, rewatched streams and videos by creators and fans, and watched as opinions have shifted across fandoms in real time. I feel extremely confident in saying that every person on every side cares deeply about respecting others and creating safe, welcoming communities in all mcyt spaces. Where they differ is on how to show that respect, which kinds of expectations they think are reasonable in different spaces, and beliefs on how those in power should be using their influence. I don’t expect this survey’s results to fundamentally change anything - this debate has been going on longer than mcyt has existed. But I think it’s still important to analyze the actual arguments people are making and how they affect our communities, instead of focusing on expected behavior from others based on our own values, so we can see the varying expressions of humanity in each other and work towards a better future for our fandom. I don’t think we’re as different as the discourse may have us believe.

This is the new flag, the old one was more vivid and in a z shape, but it's been made more neutral to be inclusive of people with seizures or sensory issues.

Each stripe represents a different aspect of disability:

Red: Physical disabilities

Yellow: Cognitive & intellectual disabilities

White: (And this is the key one I think) Invisible AND undiagnosed disabilities

Blue: Mental illnesses

ill never be okay about season 6 grian. he was the most whimsical ever. he had like 60 costume changes, sang silly songs at every opportunity AND defined the course of story arcs for years to come. all the other arcs blossomed with his involvement, like concorp were having they time of their LIFE beefing with sahara. WHILE working on sahara he gave these 2 redstoners smth to giggle about and created legendary memes.

like grian is not my fav hermit and im always conscientious about not making him overshadow other hermits but this dude was fucking phenomenal. SO many storylines in one season. yeah it was season sixfinity but STILL. the head games, tag, civil war, area 77 vs hippies, ariana griande, the build off, the time travel, architechs and sahara, stealing mumbo's mustache, the guinea pig service. SO MUCH

I got this like 20 hours ago and was considering not posting it, but then I slept on it and decided that why not. It’s not like this is the worst of the harassment people have received anyway.

At least they had the balls to send it off anon. It’s a blank blog so likely a throwaway, but still. I’m censoring their name to avoid anyone attempting to harass them. Debating whether or not that’s a courtesy I should give, but unfortunately I am dedicated to my morals despite them being a shitty person.

Also, they spelt genuinely wrong. If you’re going to send a death threat at least have proper grammar.

This is over minecraft roleplay characters. And I’m not breaking any “boundaries.” I couldn’t give two shits about his characters. I don’t make content of them, let alone ship content.

One last time, let me repeat that, I am being told to end my own life over something that I am not doing. And even if I was doing it, the “horrible boundary breaking” action is shipping Minecraft roleplay characters. Whether Pyro condones harassment or not, this is the environment he created.

Update that’s actually really late: I fixed this. I need to get more shulker boxes (I’m considering setting up a farm for that now) but I’ve not got a shulker of netherite fortune 3 picks, a shulker of netherite silk touch picks, and 18 shovels. I’m planning on making some axes to add to the set but I need to mine more netherite and I’ll be honest I can’t be bothered rn. That took like five hours of enchanting and just as much time in the nether.

Okay so I don’t really want to get involved too much, but I do have something that I think it worth considering for any CCs who might, by any slim chance, see this.

I've got a lot to say and there's some fandom history, so please read under the cut.

Fandom culture is old. Very, very, insanely old. What we think of as modern fandom started in the 1960s with the Star Trek fandom, if not even earlier, before eventually moving to the internet in the late 80s early 90s, but the spirit of fandom existed long before that. Hell, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wanted to end the Sherlock Holmes series with The Final Problem, where our dear detective falls to his death at the Reichenbach Falls in Switzerland, but the public mourning and outcry for the fictional character that the author continued the story and found a way to make Sherlock live instead. Even if it wasn’t called that, that’s fandom spirit in its most annoying and amazing.

The point is, fandom culture isn’t something you can just tame or control. Attempts have been made to do just that, with one of the most famous being by Anne Rice in the late 90s and early 2000s. Rice took issue with people using her characters, and she took extra issue (iirc) with fans writing about same sex pairings, as a result of her issues with fanfiction, she sued multiple fan authors for copyright infringement and defamation, and she also sent out plenty of cease and desists to both fan authors and the sites hosting fanfiction, along with making formal requests to host sites like FanFiction.net to remove the offending works. Despite the legal efforts of Anne Rice, fandom goers kept writing, kept shipping, kept creating, and even today the Vampire Chronicles fandom is still going strong literal decades later.

Even though Rice eventually toned down about fanfiction, especially after it was decided to be a legal grey area, the efforts of her and other like minded authors left some severe scarring on fan culture and a deep distrust of the creators being involved in fandom spaces. If you ever find a fanfic with a note along the lines of “these characters do not belong to me, they are the property of [copyright owner]” or “[IP] is the property of [copyright owner], that’s something that started to legally protect fan authors from being sued. Some authors might add it as a joke, but for older fics or fics made by fan authors who have been writing since the early 2010s (or even earlier), it’s genuine.

Even now, Anne Rice is a common reference point in fandom history discussions or any conversations about the legality of fanworks.

Anne Rice didn't understand fandom culture, didn't understand that fandom isn't about her, and tried to control her fandom and punished them for doing what fandom does.

I’m not saying this because I don’t think CCs have the right to have boundaries or express them, but to make a point. Fandom isn’t about the person who made the character. It’s not about the author or the content creator or the real people behind beloved portrayals, it’s about the media, whatever form it takes, and the passion people have developed for it.

The first rule of fandom is and always has been “Don’t Like, Don’t Read”. The block button exists. The filter tags feature exists on Tumblr, Ao3, and probably other platforms as well. Ultimately, you can’t control other people, but you can control your internet experience.

I get that it sucks and it’s uncomfortable just how… intense(?) fans can be, but telling fans what they can and cannot do isn’t going to achieve anything, and harassing people won’t make them follow your instructions any more than leaving them be. If anything, harassing your fans for being fans and engaging in fandom will just make you unpopular.

In addition, encouraging harassment of any kind for any reason, no matter how specific or limited in scope (ie only a few people allowed to act on the CC's behalf), it will create a toxic fandom environment, and most fans go into fandom as a form of escapism, to get away from the difficulties in their life, and a toxic fandom environment is one of the fastest ways to kill an otherwise thriving community, especially when the community is as small as these little sub bubbles we all have found in the larger MCYT fandom.

Sure, you'll still have your loyalists, but even loyalists lose interest eventually, and slowly but surely numbers will dwindle, especially as former fans warn potential newcomers of the environment.

Is there also a discussion to be had about fans not tagging things correctly? Yes, there very much is. There’s also a discussion to be had about the extreme focus there is on shipping culture, but those can be had another day.

Talk to your fans, respect them and ask for that same respect in return, but at the end of the day, fandoms are about you and what you've made, they're not for you.

I want to add a quick addition here for clarification.

CCs absolutely have the right to have and express boundaries, and they have the right to ask fans not to go against those boundaries, but they don't have the right to control the fandom. They don't have the right to send people to harass fans who don't follow the boundaries.

What CCs should do:

Have a cc/dni tag and ask fans to use that tag for any and all boundary breaking content

Ask fans not to maintag anything that might be considered boundary breaking

Filter tags appropriately

Block fans (not call them out or harass, just block) who repeatedly maintag content the CC doesn't want to see or who don't use a cc/dni tag, along with banning viewers who try to force the CC to engage in boundary breaking content or themes on stream

Understand that they cannot and never will be able to control all fans and they'll probably do a lot more damage to their mental and physical well being by trying to do so than by simply ignoring boundary breaking content

Have a discussion with fans about tagging posts properly every so often

What CCs should not do:

Send mods, friends, or anyone else to harass people for making boundary breaking content (with or without proper tags)

Demand that all fans immediately follow all boundaries to the letter at all times and never engage in content that breaks the CC's boundaries

Have enforcers infiltrate private spaces where the CC is not involved to ensure all members of that private space are following the CC's boundaries and reporting back to the CC about anyone not following those boundaries

Create a hostile environment where fans are harassed for not following boundaries or where fans feel as though they are constantly being monitored for misbehavior

Have your boundaries, express them, enforce them on your end, but don't create a hostile environment, and don't assume everything the fandom does is for you just because it's about you. If you're a CC and seeing certain content stresses you out, take practical steps to avoid that content while making your wishes known.

If you're sober and don't drink, you can ask that people don't drink around you or to not be invited to events where there will be drinking. You can remove yourself from situations where there's drinking because it makes you uncomfortable.

But you don't get to go into your friend's home unannounced, search through their kitchen for alcohol and dump it down the sink because drinking makes you uncomfortable. You can't forbid them from restocking after you leave.
