I've seen a lot of people hating on the very contemporary pop culture references, and I've just got to say that whether you like them, or you don't, or you think they're cringey, they are very book accurate.

I know it's weird hearing pop culture references from your own time but let's not forget that Armand was obsessed with Blade Runner in the 80s and then in the 90s was an X-Files fan, and Raglan James sent Lestat a VHS tape of All Of Me as a body swap clue.

"I don't have trauma" says Daniel after sucking on a hookah like it's his life line and relapsing so hard because he can't physically over dose anymore, a very normal vampire with no trauma at all.

i did really like daniel in the books and other adaptations, but i think what they’ve done with him in the amc series is so incredibly cool and intriguing.

the concept of a cynical, acerbic old journalist who battled a lifetime of trauma and addiction being faced with mortality through a fatal degenerative disease that will slowly rob him of his autonomy. a closeted elder gay man who spent the 80s in the queer scene in san francisco living through the aids crisis. he’s persistently clever and cunning and is strongly implied to have some sort of resistance towards mind control. he’s ruined every single relationship in his life so now he’s an asshole old man living alone with a terminal illness and his daughters don’t even talk to him while he keeps their childhood belongings in his closet. he ruins lives and people but is an expert at self-preservation.

and now! he’s a vampire, cured of his degenerative disease, free of the threat of mortality that has been looming over his head since the 80s, and he’s a cool mean old gay guy vampire who walks around in a leather jacket and sunglasses ripping people’s heads off and smoking out of a hookah. he’s been saved from death but given a fate that many in-universe consider arguably worse.

How they’ve got lestat moving this season

iwtv seasons one and two was like being tucked into bed and read a heartbreaking story by Louis du pointe du lac. The Vampire Lestat is like your blackout drunk uncle trying to tell you an anecdote at a family gathering

I trust Daniel Molloy (as an interviewer)! If he's repeatedly asking Lestat if he was a stutterer as a child, Daniel is onto something.

And everything else is a type of distraction that Lestat WANTS us to be distracted by.

In previous seasons, Danny Molloy talks about how Louis uses third person "him" or "one" when he's trying to distance himself from his actions. Danny is good at catching this stuff!

Lestat is a master of DISTRACTION. Look at the visual difference in the third season (a naked woman showering in the background of a shot, switching from documentary style to colour, time skips, so much modern slang it's almost hard to understand).

Danny repeatedly throughout the episode asks Lestat if he was a stutterer as a kid. (the repetition also kind of mimicking the act of stuttering). He's hammering him. Don't get distracted! Stay on point (both Danny and us, the viewer)!

And what happens at the end of the episode? Lestat stutters as he sees his mother; and it looks like we're going to start delving into his childhood. That's where the pain is. That's where the story is.
