we're looking to create an AI policy, and when we were talking about this, my boss (older millennial) was genuinely shocked to hear that younger people do not (seem) to view AI positively (a la the recent commencement speakers being booed)

if i can impart any one piece of wisdom to y’all, it’s to, whenever possible, assume good intentions
assume people are trying their best, want to be good and treat others well, and that when their behavior doesn’t align with those goals, it’s because of outside factors that are pushing them to their limit
it’s hard to do, it doesn’t always come naturally, but it’s worth it
before anyone jumps in with an “op has clearly never worked in the service industry,” i work in a public facing library job
i have a patron who is mean as a snake. won’t respond when you greet her, barks orders at you, and is generally nasty
i couldn’t stand her & dreaded the moment she walked in the door, until i stopped one day & went “wow, to walk around feeling unhappy enough to treat people so horribly every day. what a difficult way to live.”
and so my tactics changed. i made a point to be extra kind & friendly to her. she changed her hair color one day & when i complimented her on it, she was very caught off guard & said “oh, thank you. my whole life i’ve thought i was ugly.”
now we’re at the point where she shows me pictures of watercolor paintings she made & says hi when she walks in the door. she’s not my favorite patron, but she’s perfectly okay. most unpleasant people aren’t inherently rotten, they’re just unhappy & coping with it poorly
assume people are always doing their best, even if their best happens to fall a bit short. assume good intentions

If you're with us, you're welcome. Sure, sometimes you have to wear the costume before it becomes the clothes, but also, some of the best people at Pride are the slightly confused moms, dads, and siblings who show up whether or not they understand. "Love is love" also means "I don't need to get it to show up for you."
I wanna say as a cishet person this sort of thing means a lot. It's always really disheartening whenever I see queer people talk about being cishet the same way MAGA conservatives talk about being queer.

when i was allegedly a woman i was briefly married to a cis guy before coming out as a lesbian and getting a divorce. my now ex-husband, a genuine sweetheart of a man, was very kind about it all and we remain good friends.
twenty-five (!) years later I came out as a trans man.
now. the important thing to know about my ex-husband is that he loves nothing more than 1) horrible puns, preferably bilingual ones; 2) terrible dad jokes; and 3) committing to the bit until the end of time. he absolutely lives for Shenanigans and Japery. i do not know how his long-suffering wife puts up with him, but they've been married for more than 20 years so presumably she manages.
so, to break the news to my ex, i texted him. the exchange went something like this:
me: "great news, i'm a trans guy now"
him: "oh, congrats!"
me: "thank you. now for the better news: I insist you refer to me henceforth only as your ex-husband. do you accept this challenge?"
and my cis, straight-as-an-arrow, lives-in-the-midwest, married-to-a-minister ex-husband was like
AND HE DOES! gleefully and completely straight-faced, as I understand it. confuses the hell out of everyone, none more than cishet conservative people who've known us both for decades and know for a fact he's only been married twice. I hope he never explains.

i genuinely wasn't prepared for og zandik to be dead like i had it in the back of my mind as a possibility but i guess i thought he would've at least found a way to upload his brain into the cloud or something. but no he died at 85, lived a normal human lifespan and died of normal natural causes, and everything since then has been this bizarre house of mirrors. all him but not quite, eerily eternal, cannibalizing his still-warm corpse for scientific insight and then carrying on his legacy for the next four hundred years. but if what they did with it was exactly what he would do we have no way of knowing. we get to know him refracted through a prism, through these versions of himself half-clone half-creation, but we will never know the real him. not fully. this man this monster he lived a human life and died a human death. as finite as anyone else and as much as the segments stretch the concept of "self" they know they are not him. fucked upppppp
