Final Fantasy 15 - Video Game Review
This was my second time into the Final fantasy world after trying out ‘World of Final Fantasy.’ This one was much more realistic and didn’t sugarcoat anything at all. Final Fantasy 15 is all about the value of friendships.
Prince Noctis sets forth on a journey to Altissia to marry his betrothed, Lady Lunafreya. Though this is an obligation, he’s certainly not complaining, as they have a pretty deep history. On his journey, he travels with three others. Ignis, the masterful chef and mother hen of the group. Prompto, the goofy photographer and Gladio, the bulky ‘tough guy’ that loves to give inspirational speeches. Going through so many quests with these tree and hearing the unique dialogue triggered by each quest was really rewarding and makes you quite connected to this bunch.
The story starts off amazingly and then takes a nosedive as it gets super dark, super fast and the initial pacing of Prince Noctis’ development into accepting his destiny feels super rushed. There are character deaths, but some you really can’t care for because they don’t get much screen time at all. There is a bittersweet and emotional ending that ties everything up, but after 50-70 hours of playing this game, the withdrawals are real.
The battle system is super smooth and pretty simple to grasp. What’s unique is the different animation and uses of Noctis’ weapons as shown by blue crystal glimmers during the battles, The ring of Lucis was one of my favourite weapons as it allowed you to potentially cheat your way through the lengths of the battles. I also loved crafting spells in this game, because adding some of the rare treasures can give an interesting twist to the spells and amp up some of the powers. Also, they have very cool animations when you actually manage to hit the enemies. As I don’t frequently play these games, I didn’t quite get the hang of the combo techniques, but hey, button mashing gets you a long way.
Now to get to the true core of this game. You must understand the sheer breadth of the amount of things that there are to do in this world! Prepare to fork over a decent amount of your life once you get addicted. You can drive around in your car and listen to soundtracks that you can collect on your journey. You can also modify it with paints and stickers that you find. The upgrades available later in the game for the car are SWEET. You can ride these giant fluffy birds called chocobos, change their feathers and race your friends. You can cook different recipes that give you status boosts. You can fish for different types and unique locations. You can do so many things!!
At the heart of this game are quests where you have to fetch something, kill a monster, find an item then return back to the person requesting, This can feel real repetitive, real soon. When you get to battle a really intense giant boss, with epic battle music playing in the background you definitely get a satisfying feeling when you win.
Now for the negatives. I had some intense glitches where a lot of progress was lost! One was in a dungeon where Noctis froze and another was before a quest by Takka, where there were two of him and one animation was floating over the other! Creepy stuff.
The battle graphics and animation was quite smooth and the detail in some of the settings, like Altissia was quite remarkable. This game has so much detail and so many mini activities involved that it is intensely immersive. You have to be in it for the long haul though. If you are, get ready for emotional and entertaining sequences as the four buddies battle some monsters, eat some grub and make friends as they travel around in their sweet ride.
