thinking about the "disability is not body horror" discussions, and how i feel that's another one of those talking points that came from a good place, but has been oversimplified into something kinda backwards.
cause like. becoming disabled is horrific. BEING disabled is not inherently horrific, but the sudden jarring change where you no longer even know your own limits, or the slow frustration as you gradually lose a skill you previously had; that can definitely be wildly upsetting and traumatizing to go through. not to mention the horror of navigating the world as a disabled person, being treated as lesser and like you can't/shouldn't even advocate for yourself. And don't get me wrong, a disabled life does not have to be constantly awful, but i think we all have awful moments where we hate it.
i understand the frustration with abled people ONLY ever creating art about disabled people to coo at how sad and horrible it is, in much the same way that it sucks when every gay character dies. but it's in tension with the very real horror and despair that disabled people often experience. in this way, playing with body horror as a discussion about disability can be very powerful (look at Metamorphosis).
i just worry sometimes when people play a hardline "disability is not horror!" we can sometimes start to believe that everyone who puts "disability" and "horror" in the same sentence are saying something they aren't (that disabled people are horrifying, from an outsider's perspective).
agree and want to add: you know what's a perfectly normal thing humans can do and is also body horror?
pregnancy.
lots of people think pregnancy is inherently horrific! and it sure can be, for a lot of different reasons. exploring the body-horror aspect of pregnancy is like. a Trope, and not a bad one.
I have been pregnant - happily, intentionally, zero-regrets-ly - and I can recognize it can still be body horror, even if it doesn't horrify me personally.
and disability can be the same - the process of becoming disabled can, in fact, be fucking scary! that's okay to explore!
Googled something about quick hydration and it suggested big jug of water, couple tbsp pickle juice, dash of lime juice.
Its surprisingly tasty????
Pleased to report that after a day of this i am not longer craving caper brine and my mouth is not dry as usual. There's some good suggestions in the notes too that I want to try.
-ancient roman posca: water, red or white wine vinegar, honey, salt, herbs (coriander, mint, thyme)
-switchel: water, ginger, vinegar, sweetener, lemon, salt
-ayran: yogurt, water, salt, mint
-Agua pepino: water, cucumbers, lime, sugar, optional mint.
I have been reminded of:
-shrub: vinegar, sida water, elderberry (or other berry), sugar.
I have now been informed of
-sekanjabin: honey, vinegar, mint, water.
"Wow, I wonder why this post was popular this week."
-sees the reports of the heatwave in Europe-
"... ah."
Hate. Let me tell you how much I've come to hate golf since I began to live. There are roughly 2.25 million acres of land dedicated to golfing in the United States of America. If the word 'hate' was engraved on each blade of grass in those millions of acres, it would not equal one one-billionth of the hate I feel for golf courses at this micro-instant. For golf. Hate. Hate.
i'm seeing a couple terfs in the notes so just a reminder that the only thing stupider than golf is calling yourself a "feminist" and then turning around and hating women who fought for the right to be women, please consider reblogging if your hatred of golf is rivaled only by your love for trans women
I fuck with this
[image description: screenshot of writing formatted as a question and answer exchange. headline of piece is: The Proposal to Raise Every Boy as a Girl. (author not listed)
Q. You want to raise every boy as a girl? Yes.
Q. Why? A boy will learn to hate girls as long as he is raised in such a way where he is treated as better, and superior to, his girl peers, whenever he is cruel to girls. So, instead, we raise boys as girls.
Q. What if they say they are not a girl, and want to be acknowledged as boy? Then you know they are a boy, so you must make sure to understand them as boy, and not a girl.
Q. What does it mean to be 'raised as a girl'? That's up for you to decide. The only difference is that you should not raise boys any differently than you raise girls, since you raise every boy as a girl.
Q. Girls and boys are raised in specific ways for specific purposes, so it does not make sense to raise boys as girls. If you raise every boy as a girl, then there is no being which is not raised as a girl, so anyone raised as a girl necessarily must learn to do anything and everything to grow up, without restrictions on tasks, labours, or interests.
Q. But boys and girls are different. All two girls are different, and raising girls in one specific way destroys this individuality in favour of moulding girls to serve the same master. Still, the girls resist to live life on their own terms. If girls can be raised such that they know they can do anything they want, including not being girls, so too will boys raised as girls.
Q. Why not raise every girl as a boy? Because if a girl does not exist among boys, then the girl is made.
Q. Why not raise girls and boys as themselves? The self must be made in a world where girls and boys can first and foremost be themselves. One step towards this goal is to raise every boy as a girl.
Q. The way people raise girls is cruel, so why would you raise boys with that cruelty? If you raise girls with cruelty, then you should stop being cruel to girls.

"I would have hidden Anne Frank from the Nazis!" "I would have supported the Civil Rights Movement!" an uncomfortably high number of you would have cheered on a lynching if you thought that the victim was guilty of a bad enough crime be so fucking for real
On Saturday I said to my partner, as I have said for months, "A ten thousand dollar a year raise would solve so many of my problems."
As of this morning I was reluctantly looking for jobs because I love my job and don't want to leave it, but see: $10k raise problem solver.
As of noon today this was no longer an issue, because my boss called me with the news that I was getting a $10K merit raise.
I feel like a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders. This is roughly $200 extra per paycheck. Enough to pay off debt faster, rebuild my savings, and spend a weekend a month in Milwaukee getting obscenely laid. The sex I'm going to have on $200 extra per paycheck. You can't even.
May all of you get the $10K raise your soul has yearned for. And whatever level of sex you can be satisfied with for $200.
hey bestie i think ur post might be charmed 'cause you aren't gonna fuckin believe what happened today
It's extremely frustrating seeing the amount of people who are getting exposed for using ai while writing their fics on ao3. For those who don't know, there's a new skin that was developed that tells you if someone copy pasted text directly from Claude to ao3, and a lot of people are angry to see that a lot of popular fics have been created using Claude--and this is JUST Claude use, btw. not any other ai.
There's no excuse for any kind of generative ai use in fandom space. The whole point of participating in a fandom is creating works out of your own love for the source material, and sharing it with those who love that material just as much as you do. In a time where data centers are not only contributing to ongoing climate change, wasting water, and negatively impacting marginalized groups of people through environmental racism, using generative ai for something as personal yet inconsequential as writing fanfic is not an innocent action.
Of course there's something to be said about the reasons why people might be drawn to using gen ai for their works--clout-chasing, insecurity in writing skills, pressure from readers for more content--but the fact of the matter is that there's no reason to use gen ai at all. Fanfiction is, first and foremost, a hobby. No author owes any content to their readers. No reader is owed anything from an author, and they certainly don't need to spread word about works if they don't want to. Everything we do is for the love of the art and for the community we build. Using gen ai directly harms everyone, not just those in the writing space as ai constantly rips at popular works for its foundations. Using it harms the trust your readers have for you and harms your skills as a writer, all while negatively impacting the earth itself.
Stop using generative ai, and do not EVER condone it in fandom spaces. We don't want anything to do with it.
And as a personal message to those who will try defending any use of gen ai, from someone studying environmental science and currently living in the state with over SIX HUNDRED data centers that are contributing to the current heatwave and environmental deterioration:
Fuck. You.
here's a secret: whatever you're doing, you have to root for your peers with all your heart because it forces you to root for yourself too. I've seen people in various spheres of my life (workplaces, education, art, activism) fall into the trap of envy and resentment when they see others succeed while they struggle, and it always always goes hand in hand with them pulling back and giving up and stagnating.
when you let yourself get sour grapes about shit, you tacitly give up on yourself. when you sit around hoping other people will flop and fail so you can catch up to them, you stop trying. it's a fantasy of mediocrity, the vain wish that other people would walk so you could take the gold medal at a jog. wouldn't you rather come last place at 27mph?
“If you give children a vocabulary that’s large enough and complex enough to express their emotions and their ideas, you give them access to complex feelings and emotions in themselves. So that if you talk to a teenager and all they can say about how they feel is BAD, and they haven’t got, you know, a larger vocabulary for lonely, abused, insecure, frightened…I mean there’s this huge panoply which…I remember when my daughter was just telling me that she just felt bad, I bought her a thesaurus. I said, “Look up, is it sort of over lonely, or is it insecure…and look up under lonely, you’ll find two hundred words for lonely. Which one?” But what that does is that it makes you feel that there’s this huge complexity of emotions and there are words for all of them. If you want children to feel less frustrated and less disenfranchised and less unable to even feel comfortable with their own emotions, you’ll have to give them a vocabulary that’s as complicated as their inner lives. And one of the things we see in children is this incredibly reduced capacity for reporting their inner lives to the exterior world. One of the things is just teaching them poems, just teaching them to memorize poems in school, they don’t have to interpret them, if they just internalize the language of the poem, the complexity of the emotion in the poems…” -Jorie Graham, in a conversation
i know we always talk about how inej represents magic to kaz but i just wanna say beyond the fact that she’s the disappearing coin—where as soon as he knew she could sneak up on him he figured out how she did it—the real essence of the magic he sees in her is her optimism.
throughout their entire time knowing each other, kaz couldn’t wrap his head around why someone who was dealt such a horrible hand by the world could still have faith in it and that’s what turns him back into the obsessed kid who stays up all night trying to figure out what makes the trick work (the reason he fell in love with magic in the first place)
the best part? it’s not only not a trick, but kaz in turn becomes the thing that is magicked, just like the coin. the determination to heal and work through his trauma along with the belief that happiness still exists seem to appear out of thin air within him after years of being a pessimistic grouch. and just like how the coin is never actually gone, neither was that part of him!!! he just needed a little help finding it again.
idk i just love how in a world full of grisha who can literally stop a heartbeat or shift tides, inej is the one thing that makes him feel like anything is possible again.
Working an office job will truly make you have the wildest enemies, bc why is my nemesis rn a woman I’ve never met and who exclusively haunts me by sending diabolical emails, and also a specific guy who left my company before I even worked here and made the system so fuckass that it ruined procedures for like a year
Yesterday my nemesis (woman I’ve never met and whose face I’ve never seen) sent my office an email so rude, basically saying we had fucked up every project she ever ordered from us, one of the worst emails I’ve ever read in my life.
And it pissed me off so badly that I spent the ENTIRE WORK DAY today compiling evidence from every project my team has ever done for her, pulling past emails she’d sent us, putting together an entire case proving that she had been the problem all along. That she got projects mixed up, that she’d made requests that were nonsensical, literally everything you could possibly imagine. Screenshots of emails, reports we’d submitted, EVERYTHING.
This woman in particular has been terrorizing my team for years, her name is almost a slur in my office, I had simply had ENOUGH of her.
I put all of this evidence together and sent it to all of my bosses at 4:30pm. Then I took a long break to eat a sweet treat and drink some tea.
After my break, my bosses all called in an emergency meeting with me and they said they read my report and fucking loved it. And I sat on a teams call with my boss’ boss as she wrote my nemesis the scathing email I had always fantasized about sending, using the evidence I’d compiled, and hit send.
It was the most satisfying workday I’ve had since I got hired.
Everyone say thank you sanitation workers we owe you our lives sanitation workers
Man I miss free the nipple. Its getting warmer and we don’t even have free the nipple anymore
feminism has backslid so hard in recent years people don't even know what free the nipple means anymore
To clarify for those who don't know, "free the nipple" isn't about going braless, it's about going topless
No shirt, no bra, completely bare torso, just like cis men are allowed to
It's about desexualizing breasts and "female presenting nipples" and not being criminalized for our bodies if we want to go topless because it's a million damn degrees out. This was a popular growing movement that was still widely known a decade ago!
And the fact that not wearing a bra is so discouraged and stigmatized that people think the movement was about being able to go braless under your shirt in public rather than about being able to not wear a shirt at all says a lot about how far we've backslid in the past decade
