Yes, there is a massive skew of trans masc over trans femme characters. 'Trans Male Character' in HP has over 1800 works and 'Trans Female Character' in HP has over 950 - so just over half as many.

Reminder that JKR started her trans hate fest by attacking trans masc folks so please don't try to argue that's because trans masc folk aren't being targeted - we are absolutely being targeted by JKR.

I was 19 when the "It Gets Better" campaign came out and, honestly, I hated it. Well off cis people making a promise that they had no way of upholding. It never made me feel better.

But I was young, so I didn't push back too hard.

Now it's 16 years later... and I honestly can't say that it's gotten better.

I've never been able to afford to live in an area that was super LGBT friendly.

My rights have been in a constant state of flux.

The majority of people I meet still don't know that people like me exist and I'm left in an uncomfortable limbo of not really feeling like a man but not being able to handle coming out as non-binary over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again.

It's actually getting worse right now.

Maybe it gets better for otherwise privileged queers. It probably does. They can afford to move into a safe neighborhood in a place with solid LGBT protections and settle into a position of comfort.

But for trans people, people with disabilities, poor people, and other marginalized minorities who are also queer - it may not have gotten better. It may not ever get better.

And I wish our community had put more effort into creating a framework for how to survive when it doesn't get better, rather than just giving empty promises about a future that may never manifest.

i need trans allies to really internalize the idea that masculinity in girls and women is punished by society. gender nonconformity is never rewarded. women being allowed in some circumstances to wear pants is not an example of "masculinity" being rewarded. women had to fight for a long fucking time in order to be able to wear pants and in many western households and non-western countries, women are still forced to wear dresses. we are still a long ways off from any kind of gender equality or acceptance of gender nonconformity.

I'm sure it's been said - but women aren't really allowed to wear men's pants. I know that "boyfriend" is a popular cut of women's jeans and that some women will wear men's pants - but as a whole, women are expected to wear women's pants. Not men's.

A special subset of pants has been designed for women - and they've completely taken away the functionality of pockets. They've made the sizing nonsensical and inconsistent so women can really struggle to find pants that fit in ways that men frankly don't.

Hey! Thanks for checking in. Here’s some life updates:

word-butler: Due to moving up in her career, some Internet tracks had to be swept away. She is sad about this, but it was a necessary move. These days she’s busy writing campaigns and shenanigans for our D&D crew but does send me occasional “what if” messages about the MP or 180 Days universe.

Me: I’m really sorry for leaving stories hanging. But my head and heart weren’t in it. Thanks to therapy, I put it together that I lost an important person to me every year for five years. Wasn’t helpful for my depression and anxiety. And it’s really hard to think up cute teacher stories while being an actual teacher during COVID and the education hot mess we’re still dealing with because of it.

Thank you all for the occasional check ins and messages. I miss that sense of community and seeing your usernames on my screen. Hope you all are doing well, if you’re still hanging around here.

hello. So what do you think draco thinks of ginny in different times?(apart from being a weasley of course)

I think he clocks her crush on Harry immediately and hates her because of it (even though he would never admit it). In 7th year he secretly respects her for fighting back and hopes nothing terrible happens to her. By 8th year of course he has matured a lot. He doesn’t hate her and he stops being jealous because he notices before anyone else that Harry’s not really as into her as everyone seems to think. Once drarry happens it takes a while for them to get along, but then they do eventually become pretty good friends. It helps that Ginny realizes she is much happier without Harry.

I think the only canon Ginny & Draco interaction we have is in year 2 when Harry gets the valentine's and Draco publicly mocks Ginny for it.

I still think Draco's the one who wrote the poem and he was pinning it on Ginny when he saw Harry didn't like it.

I think “Scared?” / “You wish” became one of Drarry’s inside jokes and they each said it all the time in all kinds of contexts, always with the intent of making the other feel better or more relaxed, and sometimes just laughing at how dramatic they “used” to be. (As if they aren’t still dramatic now.)

Oh absolutely 100% the case. I think they also sometimes call each other Potter and Malfoy jokingly for the same reasons. Just like they both knew how to rile each other up when they were enemies now that they’re not they know exactly how to get the other one to laugh or calm down.

is same-sex marriage legal in the wizarding world?

it’s unclear and kinda depends on what you want to imagine. I mean obviously out of universe there’s no visible gay people because JKR is a bigot so in universe that means either we just happen not to see them and they’re around or else homosexuality is very stigmatized and same-sex marriage is illegal. certainly you can make a good argument for there being homophobia in the wizarding world and their archaic values mean you could make an argument for same-sex marriage being illegal. However, I tend to not be that interested in that and to head canon is being allowed (tho I’ve read some really good fics that explore homophobia). I tend to prefer to ship drarry in a context where homophobia is not a barrier because I feel like if we can have a fantastical world with dragons and magic we can have one where being gay is normal.

I'd like to make a correction to this: We have a canon-confirmed gay wizard from whom we can reasonably extrapolate the wizarding world's opinion on homosexuality, because joann has explicitly stated that Dumbledore is gay.

Dumbledore's relationship with Grindelwald was canonically, according to joann, homosexual in nature. And Dumbledore's connection to Grindelwald is made public scandal in the HP series - so the fact that no mention of his homosexuality is made speaks volumes.

In a gay-friendly society, acknowledging the romantic nature of Dumbledore & Grindelwald's relationship is considered important. If the magical world were incredibly gay accepting, then Dumbledore and Grindelwald would have been recognized as a romantic couple because horny teenagers aren't known for being subtle with their relationships (when it's safe to not be subtle).

Even if it weren't that completely accepting - if the magical world were reasonably LGB-friendly and if Dumbledore were openly gay - then Skeeter would have at minimum left open the question mark of "What was their relationship" because Dumbledore was a gay teenager with a hot guy. Look at what she did to Hermione.

In a homophobic society where homosexuality is acknowledged, using homosexual relationships to attack the participants is common. If Dumbledore were openly gay - or even just presumed to be gay - and the society is homophobic while acknowledging homosexuality - then Skeeter would have actively suggested a romantic relationship to disparage Dumbledore.

Either Dumbledore - one of the most powerful and revered wizards - is so deeply closeted that even Rita Skeeter wouldn't think to insinuate; or the wizarding world finds homosexuality so unthinkable that they won't even speak of it when trying to tear someone down who is known to be gay. (So he's essentially closeted by a society that outright rejects the concept)

Dumbledore has enough problems, and is old enough, that it is possible that the modern (1990s) magical world is gay accepting and Dumbledore is a product of a darker time whose fear is so deeply ingrained that he can't admit his feelings. Which, given how powerful Dumbledore is, points to just how incredibly dark those times would have had to be.

But, honestly, love is so central to Dumbledore's message and belief system that I really hate the idea that he'd be that much of a coward. If homosexuality were deeply stigmatized and became widely accepted, Dumbledore should be slapping a goddamned rainbow in the Great Hall in celebration and talking about how love always wins.

So it's far more likely that homosexuality is deeply shunned that even the great Albus Dumbledore wouldn't risk going up against it.

(Also keep in mind that in historical 1990s - there was no legal same sex marriage anywhere. Just throwing that out there.)

people claim to want women's sexual liberation, when in reality they want women to perform a very particular feminist narrative through their sexuality (dominating men). They don't actually want to see women being completely honest and true to their sexual desires when that entails women enjoying submission or being penetrated or having a genuine emotional connection to a man. they don't want women's sexual interiority. they want women to be living symbols of their Battle of the Sexes narrative.

there's no space here to explore why a woman, as an active partner, enjoys her experience of submission (her mental and physical pleasure), and dominating men isn't even about that either! it's literally all just "are you performing the preferred feminist narrative through your personal actions" and it's dressed up like it's concern for women. which, y'know, is also exactly what the patriarchy does.

Here's how the hierarchy of good domination works:

-Submissive's needs -Dominant's needs -Dominant's wants -Submissive's wants

The needs of the submissive are the #1 priority of domination. Good, healthy domination has to keep the submissive's needs in the forefront.

Domination - healthy domination - is not "the dominant doing whatever they want to the submissive".

Doing whatever you want to someone without any regard for their needs is abusive.

And - yes - people can consent to this. I am aware. People can consent to abuse and it can still be abusive. I've seen too many people in the wrecked aftermath of unhealthy kink for me to be willing to bend on this one.

Healthy domination requires so much care and consideration for the submissive partner.

Frankly - a lot of dominance is pretty much entirely the dominant meticulously creating an experience for their submissive that the submissive just gets to ride out. The submissive has to give a tremendous amount of trust - but in healthy domination, that trust is rewarded in spades.

People talk about emotional labor and how men don't do it. Guess what? Domination is emotional labor. Like, that is the tl:dr of healthy domination - Emotional Labor.

Not saying submissives never do emotional labor, but there is a helluva lot of emotional labor in being a good dominant and, frankly, submissives can get away with doing very little when they've got a good dominant. (Submissives - don't take advantage of your good dominant, reward them by being a paradoxically equal partner in your power imbalance.)

Like the "You Should've Asked"? How women become the manager of the household while also having to do the work? Dominants become the manager of the relationship while also having to master the skills.

A good dominant has a solid understanding of their submissive's psychology. A good dominant knows healthy and safety for every play they take part in.

The sheer amount of research and learning and practicing that goes into being a good dominant. Jesus Christ. People do not appreciate it.

So, ironically, we're telling women that they have to fix the innate imbalance in which they do all the emotional labor and more than their share of the housework/childrearing/etc - and we fix this by them taking on a role where they do most of the emotional labor and more than their fair share of effort in sex.

Right.

Make it make sense.

How does a husband's stoicism benefit his wife?

A wife's emotional labor in terms of remembering everything about running the household, making plans, etc etc etc - the husband benefits.

A husband restricting his emotions - no one benefits. The wife does not benefit from her husband being emotionally constipated. The children do not benefit from a father who lacks emotional intelligence.

The husband is wasting his energy on something that harms his entire family as well as himself.

That is not equivalent to a wife working herself to the bone juggling all the needs of a household while her husband hangs up his work hat, sits in front of the screen of his choice, and unwinds.
