this oneās for my gay star trek fans: letās start identifying as āfriend of spockā
wait but if ur ace AND aro AND andro...how can u be queer as fuck? Your identity is having no identity at all, I just don't see how it makes sense
Well who knows when this came in, and despite it being a bad faith ask I'm going to go ahead and clarify. Queer is an identity. I identify as queer. I use it as an umbrella so I dont have to deal with explaining multiple identities to assholes who dont actually care anyway. I save my spoons this way.
If I'm talking to other queers and discussing the particulars of our identity you will find that I ID as a sex positive asexual biromantic and androgyne. Sex positive Asexual meaning that I dont experience sexual attraction but will engage in sex with partners for various reasons. Biromantic meaning that I am romantically attracted to more than one gender. Adrogyne meaning not male or female but somewhere in between and both at the same time.
To be Queer is to be a person who is not straight AND cisgender AND allosexual AND actively identifies as such.
Identities are created and used by individuals to create a sense of community and are only meant to last as long as they are useful to the individual. Another person telling you how you are allowed to identify is a bunch of hogwash as long as the community you are identifying with is not trying to hurt people or is not culturally exclusive. Your identities are valid. You are valid. ā¤

They go camping in the fall, hiking and kissing on a mountaintop and holding each other close as they watch the campfire send sparks up into the night.
And in the morning, Sam wakes up wrapped around Cas in their sleeping bag, and all is right with the world. But then he notices a rustling in the warm valley of the sleeping bag over where their bodies meet and spots the birds nesting there, snuggling under each otherās wings. And the squirrel nesting in his hair. AndĀ something curled up behind his knees what the fuck is that.
āCas,ā he whispers, startling the birds, who flap their wings in his face and chirp indignantly. āCas, wake up.ā
āGood morning, Sam,ā he mumbles, eyes still closed.
āCas, there are animals in the tent. Like, wild animals. One of themās in the sleeping bag.ā
āTwo, actually. Bear cubs.ā Sam freezes in horror, wanting to get the fuck out of there, but also not wanting to disturb theĀ bear snoring against his legs.
āWhy are there bears in the tent, Cas?ā he whispers frantically.
āI heard them crying outside. They were cold. Iām sure their mother will be by to pick them up soon.ā
Sam is speechless, because how do you begin to explain the problem with bear cub sleepovers to a guy whoĀ doesnāt see the problem with bear cub sleepovers?Ā But Cas just reaches back, sending the birds into another flurry of indignation, and pats Samās hip affectionately.
āDonāt worry, Sam,ā he reassures him, āIāll make sure she doesnāt eat you.
And, strangely enough, Sam is okay with that.
The only heckling they receive as a couple comes from Dean. He sees it his right as both their brother and best friend to attempt a joke whenever theyāre in a room together.Ā
āQuit making goo-goo eyes at each other from across the room.ā āUgh, itās too early to see you guys making out. And near the coffee too?!ā āHeh. Guess I shoulda booked a separate room so you two couldā¦you know.ā āSammy, arenāt you gonna be a gentleman and order for your boyfriend here?"Ā
The comments donāt bother Castiel as much as they do Sam. On a good day, Sam will take Deanās ribbing with a strained laugh. Otherwise, Sam will roll his eyes and, if possible, leave in a huff, Castiel reluctantly following behind. Castiel apologizes for Deanās behavior, and he doesnāt like to, but he tells Sam if they stop showing affection around Dean, Dean might stop.Ā
"No, Cass, we justā-ā Sam sighs.Ā
Castiel waits for Sam to continue, but Sam falls asleep in Castielās arms, and they donāt talk about it again until theyāre off on a hunt. Dean says something about Sam and Castiel putting a pillow in between each other so they āwonāt be temptedā while Dean is in the room. Sam grumbles and takes a pillow from underneath Deanās head and lays it in the middle of his and Cassā bed.Ā
āHappy?ā Sam asks.Ā
Deanās smirk remains on his face until even Castiel finds himself getting annoyed. Castiel hugs the pillow that night, but it doesnāt give him the same comfort as holding Sam. He begins forming a plan.Ā Later, with the sound of Deanās light snoring coming from the other bed, Castiel throws the pillow off the bed and pulls Sam in.Ā
āSomething wrong?ā Sam asks, voice low but alert.Ā
āI have been thinking about it for some time,ā Castiel says. āAnd I would like us to implement affectionate pronouns for one another."Ā
Sam laughs lowly, āWhat aboutā¦?āĀ
"Do not worry about your brother,ā Castiel says.Ā
They plot, deciding to use pet names as often as possible, but especially around Dean.Ā Back at the bunker, Sam finds a list of pet names online, of which Castiel is more than happy to study. Castiel takes his favorites and writes them on the inside of his wrist.Ā
Dean swings by Samās room to tell them dinner is done, and before he can mention their proximity to each other on the small bed, Sam kisses Castiel on the cheek.Ā
āFind anything, hon?"Ā
Dean snorts from the doorway.Ā
Castiel shakes his head and puts aside Samās laptop. He sighs, āNot yet, dear. But Iāll keep looking.āĀ
They walk past Dean who laughs, āAw, aināt you two just the cutest.āĀ
For weeks, they continue:Ā
"Darlin, would you mind asking the waiter for another fork?ā āI donāt think my partner, the light of my life, appreciates your tone.ā āBabe, how do you pronounce this word?ā āThose stitches will heal faster if you donāt strain yourself, Sammy-bear.ā āButtercup, you and Dean check the attic, Iāll go around back."Ā
Eventually, their pet names are less contrived and they discover they actually like some of them. Sam favors āsweetheartā (doesnāt dare utter āangelā), while Cass is inclined to use ābooā or āhandsome.ā When Dean makes an offhand comment, saying itās almost Halloween, Castiel gets a glint in his eye and begins calling Sam āboo-berryā who in turn calls Castiel āpumpkin spice latte.āĀ
Dean rolls his eyes and books separate but joined rooms for Sam and Castiel.Ā
Castiel grins, gets up on tip toes to rub his nose against Samās.Ā
āDid you hear that? We have a whole room to ourselves tonight, boo-berry,ā he says.Ā
āI look forward to it, my pumpkin spice latte,ā Sam replies.Ā
"Seriously, you two are disgustingly sweet,ā Dean says, mirthless.Ā
nothing makes me happier than fluffy sastiel fics - itās the equivalent of hot chocolate under warm blankets on a rainy day. so i made this list of cute ficlets which will make you smile if youāre having a bad day (:

iāve seen lots of fob vocals isolated but never dead on arrival until now!!
Can I please have (and I don't know if this is too complicated or not, so if it just ignore this) something Sam/Eliot where Sam is in the headspace he was in the Cage? Not shut down like after torture, but like completely subservient and quiet and flinching any time Eliot raises his voice or moves too quickly. Why is up to you, but. Yeah. If you don't want to or don't feel comfortable with it, that's totally fine!
It starts after a nightmare. It doesnāt seem to be a particularly bad nightmare, but Eliot supposes that just shows what he knows, because clearly something is wrong. He doesnāt want to use the word broken, not about anyone he cares about, not about Sam, but something seems to have snapped.
Samās breathing clams down pretty quick, actually, and Eliot hopes against hope that whatever this is, is something mild. āYou good?ā he asks, gently touching Samās shoulder.
āYes,ā Sam says, but it sounds wrong, quiet and broken and it comes too quick, automatic, almost.
Eliot hesitates half a second before asking, āSam, can you turn over?ā
Sam does that immediately too, looking at Eliot with big, scared eyes, watching him carefully.
Eliotās lost. He doesnāt know whatās going on, whatās happening, but all he knows is something is desperately wrong. Itās even more confirmed when he reaches out to touch Samāto ground him, to just feel that heās real, just needing to touch himāand Sam bodily flinches away from him.

just realised that some people havenāt heard this so listen and weEp. (also watch out for frankās harmonies near the endĀ i cried)
Broke af?
But still interested in feeding yourself? What if I told you that thereās a woman with a blog who had to feed both herself and her young sonā¦on 10 British pounds ($15/14 Euro) per week?
Let me tell you a thing.
This woman saved my life last year. Actually saved my life. I had a piggy bank full of change and thatās it. Many people in my fandom might remember that dark time as when I had to hock my writing skills in exchange for donations. I cried a lot then.Ā
This is real talk, people: I marked down exactly what I needed to buy, totaled it, counted out that exact change, and then went to three different stores to buy what I needed so I didnāt have to dump a load of change on just one person. I was already embarrassed, but to feel people staring? Utter shame suffused me. The reasons behind that are another post all together.Ā
AgirlcalledJack.com is run by a British woman who was on benefits for years. Things got desperate. She had to find a way to feed herself and her son using just the basics that could be found at the supermarket. But the recipes she came up with are amazing.Ā
You have to consider the differing costs of things between countries, but if you just have three ingredients in your cupboard, this woman will tell you what to do with it. Check what you already have. Chances are you have the basics of a filling meal already.Ā
Hereās her list of kitchen basics.Ā
Bake your own bread. Itās easier than you think.Ā Hereās a list of many recipes, each using some variation of just plain flour, yeast, some oil, maybe water or lemon juice. And kneading bread is therapeutic.Ā
Make your own pastaāgluten free.Ā
She gets it. She really does.Ā This is the article that started it all. Itās calledĀ āHunger Hurtsā.
She has vegan recipes.
Donāt have an oven or the stove isnāt available? She covers that in her Microwave Cooking section.Ā
She has a book, but many recipes can be found on her blog for free. She prices her recipes down to the cent, and every year she participates in a project calledĀ āLiving Below the Lineā where she has to live on 1 BP per day of food for five days.Ā
Things improved for me a little, but her website is my go to. I learned how to bake bread (using my crockpot, but that was my own twist), and I have a little cart full of things that saved me back then, just in case I need them again. She gives you the tools to feed yourself, for very little money, and thatās a fabulous feeling.Ā
Tip: Whenever you have a little extra money, buy a 10 dollar/pound/euro giftcard from your discount grocer. Stash it. Thatās your super emergency money. Make sure they donāt charge by the month for lack of use, though.
I donāt care if it sounds like an advertisementāyou wonāt be buying anything from the site. What I DO care about is your mental, emotional, and physical healthāand dammit, foodās right in the center of that.Ā
If you donāt need this now, pass it on to someone who does. Pass it on anyway, because do you REALLY know which of the people in your life is in need? Which follower might be staring at their own piggy bank? Trust me: someone out there needs to see this.Ā
<3Ā
Iāve just come to the realisation that Hermione Granger probably memory charmed her parents and packed them off to Australia long before she told Harry and Ron sheād done it at the beginning of Deathly Hallows.
She literally never goes home from Goblet of Fire onwards, spending her summers with the boys instead. In GoF sheās remarkably blase about her teeth, something her dentist parents would have noticed and felt hurt about.Ā
If I were to guess, Iād say she probably did it after the wizarding world cup when sheād seen exactly how the wizarding world treats muggles and decided not to let that happen to her folks. Hermione knows which way the wind is blowing and gets in early. Sheād be more than capable of doing it.Ā
ā¦Oh my God.
hermione is fucking ruthless and i will fight anyone who tells me otherwise that was her ānegativeā gryffindor trait was she incredibly brave and courageous and loyal? yes but she was also vicious and violent and trapped a woman as a beetle in a jar for over a year because she pissed her off
hermione granger looked at the world, and looked at her magic, and looked at everyone elseās magic, and seemed to come to the conclusion that reality had better shut the fuck up and behave itself or sheād make it.Ā
of all the kids, i think sheāsĀ dumbledoreās successor, not harry.Ā
Never ever turn off your phone: rethinking security culture in the era of big data analysis.
Back in the 80ā²s if you were a pissed off anarchist that wanted to burn down a building, you probably checked your home for listening devices and made a plan. If you were the same kind of pissed off anarchist in the late 90ā²s, youĀ turned off your phone and encrypted your online traffic. In the 2020ā²s weāre gonna have to change our strategies once again. Intelligence gathering has adapted and so we must adapt too.
To get a head start at this, letās look at how big data analysis is being used. To do this, weāll need to talk about 3 things: metadata, patterns and networks. Those sound boring and complicated but Iām not a techy and I wonāt bore you with tech language, Iāll keep it as easy as I can.
Metadata: In the context of online activity, ācontentā means āthe message you sendā and āmetadataā means āeverything other than the contentā. So, for example, if you send your friend a text about lunch, the content might be āLetās go out for lunchā and the metadata might be āMessage send at 01/04/2018 11.32 from phone 0478239055 to phone 079726823 using Signalā.
This information is registered by your phone even if the app encrypts your actual message. Your metadata is very badly protected by technology and very badly protected by the law. No matter which country you are in, most of your metadata if freely available to intelligence agencies regardless of whether you are a suspect in anything.
Patterns: Whether you realize it or not, your metadata has a pattern. If you have a daily job you might have a very consistent pattern, if you do not your pattern might be more flexible but you have a pattern. If someone wanted to know the rhythm of your day, they could very easily do so because your pattern is in the metadata.
For example: Maybe you use the wifi at your favourite bar on most Sunday nights until about midnight, you wake up around 10 AM and check your Signal, you use your public transport card to get to class every Monday afternoon and you spend on average 1 hour on Tumblr twice a day. All this is part of your pattern.
Networks: You have online networks. Your facebook friends, the people in your phone adress book, the dropbox you share with coworkers, everyone who bought online tickets to the same punk band you attended, the people using the same wifi points as you. Take your networks, combine them with other peopleās networks, and clusters reveal themselves. Your work community, your family, your activist scene, etc.
If you are in an anarchist community that will probably be abundantly clear from all your minor network connections like going to the same band and knowing the same people as other anarchists. Even if you never liked an anarchist facebook page or pressed āgoingā on an anarchist facebook event, your network is hard to hide.
Now, letās say you commit a crime,
the kind that would result in some serious research. Letās say that on Sunday night 3 AM, you are your friends go out and burn down a naziās house. Itās obvious that anarchists did it but there are no other clues. You use traditional style security culture: you burn your notes, you are careful not to communicate about your plans near technology and you do not leave physical traces.
But because you commited the crime that night, your metadata will vary strongly from your usual rhythm: you stay at your usual bar until 2 AM to wait for your friends, you do not wake up at 10 AM in the morning so you do not check your Signal or Tumblr until 1 PM. You do not go to class. Your metadata pattern is very different from your usual pattern. The metadata patterns of your friends are different too. If one of you is clumsy, they might generate a super suspicious metadata signal like a phone being switched off at 2.30 AM and activated at 4AM. You wouldnāt be the first.
If I wanted to solve this crime using data analysis, what I would do is:
let a piece of software run a pattern analysis of the local anarchist scene to generate the 300 people most connected to the anarchist scene.
let a second piece of software analyse the metadata patterns of those 300 people over the last months and identify the biggest metadata variations around Sunday night as well as very suspicious metadata activity
Illiminate pattern variations with an obvious cause or an obvious alibi (people who are on vacation, people who are in the hospital, people who lost their job, etc).
Do indepth research into the ones that remain.
Which is how, out of a massive amount of people that I couldnāt possible all listen to at the same time, I could quickly identify a few to monitor closely. This is how I could find and catch you.
So, now what?
If traditional security culture doesnāt protect us as well as it used to, how do we adapt? Well, I donāt have all the answers but for a start, Iād say: know your network + know your pattern.
In the case of the crime above: leave the bar at midnight, return home and put your phone on your bedside table. Check the apps you check before going to bed and set your alarm to 10AM. Return to the bar without your phone. Commit the crime. Wake up at 10AM and check your Signal. Drag yourself to class or ask a comrade to make the trip with your travel card and do not use technology in your home while the comrade is taking your travel card to class. Stick to your pattern. Never ever turn off your phone.
You might also be able to manipulate your network but that seems much harder to do. Not having a smartphone and dropping out of all social activity online isĀ a big commitment. Knowing your data pattern and making sure your data pattern doesnāt look out of the ordinary? Much less commitment.
Some of the old rules will still apply: donāt talk about a crime around devices with microphones, donāt brag after a succesful action, etc. Other rules, like āturn off your phone when planning an illegal actā need to change because their metada looks too out of the ordinary. No one switches off their phone anymore. We look suspicious as fuck when we do.
This is just one idea on how we could update our security culture. There are probably other people with other, better ideas about updating our security culture. If we start the conversation, we may get somewhere.
Finally: we need to keep adapting.
As technology changes, more information is becoming available, including data we have very little control over. Smart-tvās and ads in public spaces that listen to every word we say and the tone of our voice when we say it are examples. Data analysis projects are currently using license plate reading software on security footage to map the travel patterns of cars. A lot suggests they may soon be ready to do the same with face recognition, at which point the presence of our face in public space becomes part of our metadata. More information means more accurate data analysis. Our metadata may soon be too vast annd too complex to completely map and mirror. Which means we will need to adapt our counter measures if you want to hide something.
How do we keep it all under the radar? I donāt know. But letās try to figure this shit out. These are some first thoughts about what security culture should look like in the age of modern big data analysis and Iād be very happy for any insights from comrades that have some thoughts on this.
Also: feel free to distribute and rework these words without credit.
You can work silence into patterns though. Like, say for example you go on your computer to do stuff for hours- or read stuff, or do homework. Start turning off your phone randomly. It will just look like youāre developing habits. Or heck, make your phone die in a place without a wall plug.
Also periodically go through permissions, delete apps that use voice permissions that shouldnāt, download apps to force permissions.
To be honest, I think if you turned off your phone regularily you would stick out because the only people who do that are activists. Your own pattern would be consistent but itād be so different from the general population that it would raise eyebrows. So it is bothmore effective and less work to simply leave your phone on but make sure it is not with you when you plan and do actions.
The FBI has been known to useĀ āblackoutā periods as signs of when to try and associate criminal activity (for an actual reference, I remember they used it in the Isreal Keys murders). Itās way easier to rely on your pattern and replicate it than to try and create a blackout habit with no pattern, not to mention youāre really just opening up the potential for them to associate you with other crimes related to your other blackout patterns if you end up going that route.Ā
cyberpunk resistance organization / but this is FUCKING IMPORTANT
the new silence is noise, then?
the new silence is rhythm, continuing itās daily grind, the same mundane pattern over and over, so the silent and unmundane things happening out of reach of the microphone can carry on unnoticed.
Any suggestions for finding places where there are no microphones? Iāve been thinking of that and even if I donāt have my phone on me, if Iām in public, everyone else does. Not to mention smart watches, and all the smart home techā¦
Nature is an obvious place to go.
(If youāre so very interesting to the state that they might even follow you with listening equipment, then noisy nature like waterfalls is your best option. But following someone is waaaay more expensive than tapping phones so I think thatās not as common as it once was. If the state is that interested in you, you probably shouldnāt be taking my relatively uninformed advice but looking into some serious security culture resources instead.)
If nature is not an option, consider how likely the state is to listen to the microphones around you. Are they phones belonging to anarchists? Then the they might well be listening in. Are they soccer moms having lunch in the same mall as you? Then the chance is significantly less.
Technologically it is probably already possible to use every single microphone in an area to āpassivelyā listen for key words and focus on conversations containing that word. But if youāre smart youāre using a little bit of code if youāre talking about crime in the mall.
And ā the next part is uninformed guesswork ā I donāt see any signs of that technique being used much yet. It might be something that weāll need to worry about in the future? We know for sure that some countries are identifying suspects through meta-data (the topic of my original post) because it came up as evidence in court cases. We wonāt really know whether mass passive listening over public microphones is being used in this way until we see some proof.
Oh, another idea: if you are moving, for example jogging or cycling, then no single phone will record more than a short snippet of your conversation and bystanders are unlikely to pick up more either. This isnāt something Iāve looked into, the idea just popped into my head just now. Not sure if itās any good.Ā
