This may be a controversial take, idk, but I genuinely do not blame Eurydice Hadestown at ALLL for taking the deal from Hades. Imagine being a woman in pseudo kind of industrial revolution kind of Ancient Greece and specifically asking the guy who wants to marry you “hey, how are you going to put food on the table” and he says all this stuff about how the trees are going to bend their fruits to the ground and the birds are going to make your bed, and you believe him because you want to believe him and because he clearly means it with all his heart and clearly is gifted in a supernatural way but then, lo and behold, it’s fucking winter and where’s the fucking food? Like actually that would be pretty fucking frustrating. Like obviously it’s a reflection of Orpheus’s youth and naivety that he makes those promises to her and he didn’t intentionally mislead her or anything, and obviously he was right about the song, he just didn’t finish it soon enough, but it’s just very much reminding me of the Mitski song Because Dreaming Costs Money, My Dear. All things considered, Eurydice was very patient with him, and she did believe in him, but like the Fates point out there is a very stark reality in starvation. I’m not even really responding or arguing against anything I’ve seen I’m just sort of thinking about her.

I love Hadestown so much because in the original myth Eurydice very explicitly dies and that’s why she’s in the underworld. The musical takes a much more metaphorical approach. every chapter of deltarune has a secret npc who only appears if you leave and re-enter the room 1225 times while you have a bagel in your seventh inventory slot and the npc is a sentient doorknob and when you talk to them the music cuts out and they’re like “who’s that whispering in the trees, it’s two sailors and they’re on leave, pipes and chains and swinging hands, who’s your daddy, yes i am” and then within four hours there’s a thirty minute long video on youtube titled “ASGORE IS FRIEND???
