I feel like many people have a fundamental misconception of what unreliable narrator means. It's simply a narrative vehicle not a character flaw, a sign that the character is a bad person. There are also many different types of unreliable narrators in fiction. Being an unreliable narrator doesn't necessarily mean that the character is 'wrong', it definitely doesn't mean that they're wrong about everything even if some aspects in their story are inaccurate, and only some unreliable narrators actively and consciously lie. Stories that have unreliable narrators also tend to deal with perception and memory and they often don't even have one objective truth, just different versions. It reflects real life where we know human memory is highly unreliable and vague and people can interpret same events very differently
Some types of unreliable narrator:
The Watson: is present for the event but does not have the same level of perception as protagonist
The Lemony Snicket: isn't present for the event, reconstructs the facts based on later research, can get things wrong or incomplete
The Ted Moseby: is present for the event but has romanticised and embellished their memory of it through nostalgia to an extent that you cannot fully believe it; is also prone to misremembering or outright forgetting details.
The Katniss Everdeen: is present for the event, is the protagonist, but is completely foreign to the world and out of their depth so they don't quite understand a lot of what is going on.
The Rose Quartz: is present for the event, but due to their personal agenda or feelings of shame hides and embellishes what actually happened in favour of a version that paints them in a better light.
The Big Brother: overwrites what actually happened in favour of propaganda.
The Jonathan Harker: is absolutely clueless about what is going on around them and the genre they're in so their perception of events is tinted by their own naivety.
The Goob: the narrator's own emotional bias clouds their judgement of what really happened.
The Tyler Durden: the narrator is suffering from hallucinations and doesn't realise it.
The Pi: the narrator has survived a traumatic experience and copes with it by turning it into a wonderful tale.
The Thief: the narrators identity and survival revolve around being a lying liar who lies and so they lie to you, too [shocked pikachu face]

locked the fuck in get my money up
i’m reading howl’s moving castle for the first time
losing my MIND over the fact that Ilya probably thinks he's actually helping when they go to Shane's parents' house.
They get there and Shane is like "Ilya and I are, uh..." and Ilya is like "hmm we haven't talked about this but I know Shane is really uncomfortable right now, so I will shout out the one (1) english word I know that describes this situation. LOVERS."
Then they're talking about how long they've been together and Shane is like "since our rookie season" and Ilya is like "well, hold on now, you said you don't like lying to your parents, so let's be very clear about when this started. We have to be so clear about the fact that it started the summer before our rookie season. Wait, would it make you feel better if I give your parents the exact date and time of our first hookup?"
And then Yuna is like "you've been in love that long?" and Ilya is like "I need you to understand I've been drilling your son into mattresses from here to Florida for the last decade, but I can't say that because I want you to be my mother in law, so are you picking up what I'm putting down?" and Shane is like ILYA and Ilya is like "I am ANSWERING MY MOTHER IN LAW'S QUESTIONS"
And then he drinks his vodka and eats his pasta in his Boston shirt, very proud of himself for being sooooo supportive, meanwhile Shane is actively praying for a black hole to swallow him up
remembering again that perplexing post by someone who claimed everyone should get standards because the locked tomb didn't have any substantial explicit queer representation and the only definitive gay thing they found in all of it was judith's unrequited and socially discouraged feelings for marta that got brought up in as yet unsent. I saw that post before I read the books and already knew it was wrong, but I assumed it would be at least a theoretically conceivable take to have, like maybe the sapphic relationships were clearly set up for endgame romance arcs but they hadn't kissed yet or something so no one was technically a couple. and then gtn was five hundred pages of gideon expressing boundless sexual attraction to women every three sentences like she needs it to live. cavalierhood is her job and lesbianing is her one and only hobby. how on earth could a person convince themself that everything she thinks about corona is just table-scraps allusions at the possibility of a gay person.
Doesn't Gideon canonically own gay porn magazines? And read erotic fiction about busty cohort soldiers? She's not queer-coded - Gideon is explicitly attracted to women.
iirc part of this poster's whole thing was "show me ONE quote where gideon explicitly likes the porn magazines because she's attracted to the women in them and not just because they're a symbol of counter culture that makes crux mad." the situation was bleak.
hollanov's separate issues w denial are soo funny . ilya's inner monologue is like i love DANGER & HOT SEX ! which is why i am obsessed with fucking shane hollander who only eats plain steamed fish & bitches me out for having even ONE cigarette & doesn't listen to music because he doesn't "get it" . meanwhile shane is staring grimly at a view overlooking a city skyline like he's batman going "This Horrible Fucked Up Thing Between Us ....... It Has To Stop ." & then the second he gets ilya alone he's like HIIIIIII stupid asshole 🥰 if u dont let me suck your dick right now im going to kill myself . awesome work guys seriously .
unexpectedly sexy part of the Sinners credits. we LOVE a thoroughly sourced film.
looked into the twins consultants and it turns out Coogler called up the most buckwild twins he knows, which really helps explain why Smoke and Stack are Like That
Michael B. Jordan has dual roles as twin brothers in the vampire thriller 'Sinners,' and director Ryan Coogler tells PEOPLE he hired twin co
I do 100% believe the Smokestack twins would have done this if they made it to the cellphones era btw
IDs under cut:

"Twins Consultants - Logan Miller + Noah Miller
Mississippi History & Economics Consultant - James C. Cobb
Mississippi Choctaw Cultural & Language Consultant - Jay Wesley
Hoodoo Consultant - Yvonne Patricia Chireau
Mississippi Delta Chinese Cultural Consultant - Dolly Li
Irish Cultural Consultant - Billy Mag Fhloinn
Railroad Consultant - Kelly Lynch
Historical Gambling Consultant - Leeroy Johnson
Follow up: screenshot from linked article - ‘Writer-director Coogler, 38, tells PEOPLE he hired his filmmaker friends Noah and Logan Miller as twin consultants to get insight on what makes that particular sibling bond unique. "They gave us a lot of perspective on what it's like to be an identical twin and that bond that they have," he says. "Since I've known these guys, they've shared one cell phone. So you'd call and you don't know which one was going to answer the phone but you knew the other one was always going to be right there."’

I love this because the odds of anyone picking up on historical errors are pretty damn low -- like for instance you'll have Chinese people seeing this movie, and if you fuck up anything really basic they'll notice that, but when you get as specific as 1930s Mississippi Delta Chinese culture? A lot fewer of them are going to be able to pick out errors there. And a lesser filmmaker would take advantage of that to skimp out on the research. But to Coogler I think the research was part of what drew him to this story -- the richness of the cultural interplay here requires and rewards careful research.
my fav hockey podcast boys live reacting to the moment ilya calls them boyfriends this shit has me CRYING
this heals something inside me
i dont know what happened with that vampire’s interview but people are starting to put that blonde man naked on my dash and its scaring me
trying to keep my commentary on the hockey yaoi to a minimum but I am crying laughing at the episode 6 Hollanov relationship status conversation where they establish that they've accidentally become monogamous because they've fallen too intensely in love with each other, and that they want to rearrange their professional lives so they can live closer and have more excuses to see each other, and then perhaps stay together forever and maybe come out publicly after they retire, but NOT, I repeat NOT, that they are boyfriends
... what do you mean middle of the next week is new year 💀 sounds illegal

Bonus for @mykingdomforasong:
I’m sure you’ve gotten multiple asks about this already but I’m curious about what you, with your particular taste for angst/tension, are hoping for for ep 6. from what I understand as a non-book reader (but fairly thoroughly spoiled on the book) the cottage bit is mostly fluff. maybe you have made your peace with that, but I’m still curious if there are any particular scenes you’re looking forward to, and if you could dream big, anything you’d like for to happen even if it diverts wildly from the book. hope you have a nice christmas!
sigh well I’m looking forward to ilya in those tiny shorts and boston raiders tshirt. other than that I’ve resigned myself to the fact that it’s going to be 45 min of pure fluff. if you hope for nothing you will not be disappointed. I guess I hope they handle the reveal about his mom in a thoughtful/moving way? I think that’s such a big piece of ilya’s Trauma and we haven’t really gotten much about it yet. I’m curious if they’ll use flashbacks or if it’ll just be through dialogue (I suspect the latter for limited budget reasons?).
oh and even though I am an angst fiend I actually think it’s fine for the last episode to mostly be fluff because for ME now the angst is going come after they get together and realize that getting together didn’t solve any of their more deeply rooted issues with communication/intimacy/trust or the external issues of model minority pressures/cultural homophobia/etc. so it’s fine for them to have a little bit of happiness before they’re right back into the work of figuring out how to build a life together
oh okay and last thought here: I do also truly love how goofy and fun their vibe is in episode 1 and early episode 2 when they’re just casually hooking up and nothing has gotten emotionally messy yet. I love ilya teasing shane (mr businessman mr landlord! WHAT. COLOR) and I also love the sex dynamic where shane looks deep within himself is like whoaaaa I’m kind of a slut when I truly let myself want what I want. I think there’s a difference for me between fluff that is just tooth-rotting romance novel declarations of eternal love vs. lighthearted exchanges that build out a relationship dynamic and let us see why two people really like each other. so if episode 6 is going to be largely conflict free, my hope is that it minimizes the swoony over the top romance tropes and leans more into like, letting us see how much these two guys genuinely like being in each other’s company when they’re finally able to let their walls down a little. NO to making each other soup. YES to banter and goofiness and hot sex that feels lived-in
