like can we talk about how fandom treats latino men? specifically the blatant and unapologetic sexualization of them?
poe dameron. cassian andor. gabriel reyes. jesse mccree. james vega. reyes vidal. raphael santiago. lanceĀ mcclain.
(and before you argue that jesse isnāt canonically latino, every single latino jesse fic/post/art comes hand in hand with some transparentĀ ālatin loverā bullshit where he sweet talks someone in spanish or uses his ~latin charm~ in some way or another)
and this is specifically about the treatment in lgbt fandom spaces. you guys arenāt immune to perpetuating racist tropes and you do it without any sort of acknowledgement or desire to change. even if thereās been some retrospection into the poorly written bilingual characters in fic recently, yet people continue to write and spread posts about every other racist aspect of the latin lover trope.
making them all promiscuous and overtly sexual? making them allĀ ārough and dirty in bedā? giving them allĀ ādirty mouthsā and describing them withĀ ādeep, low voicesā and talking about their accents using sexual descriptors? these all tie back to racist tropes that contribute to the sexualization of latino men.
itās not subtle. itās notĀ āsexyā. itās tiring and the lack of acknowledgement that itās happening outside of reblogging a post about it every once in a while is really fucking transparent
Marcello Melo Jr !
Jackās the kind of guy who has to dip his toes into the water and wade around a bit before he goes swimming.Ā
Gabeās the type who needs to sit by the side of the pool for at least twenty minutes before he feels sufficiently hot enough to dive in.
And Jesse is the one who cannonballs in, splashes both of them, and ends up with two grown men attempting to drown their cowboy son in retaliation, while a sunglassed Genji watches and sips margaritas from a pool chair ten feet away.
So I wanted to talk about Gabrielās pre-reaper voice (itās been suggested to me that possibly his mask acts as a voice modulator, Darth Vader style, which I am hella down with).Ā
Reaper has always been very soft spoken. Even when he snaps (e.g.Ā āWeāre losing the objective!ā,Ā āWeāre going to lose! Attack!ā etc) his change of voice for those lines is more in tone rather than volume.Ā
So now we have Reyesā voice, which, imo, perfectly demonstrates why - even if he deserved the Strike Commander position - Blackwatch suits him so well.Ā
During the brawl, the script shows the different leadership styles between Reyes and Morrison. Morrison is very US Army, meaning that heās used to sharp, loud commands that convey a sense of urgency. His worry bleeds through in his commands (e.g. Tracerās down! Revive her!) but even when no oneās in danger, his commands are, again, very loud and harsh to oneās ear. Perhaps itās just me, but Morrisonās commands make me a little anxious, because I feel as if, somehow, I should be rushing more than I am (or will ever be able to, since itās gameplay).Ā
This isnāt bad by any means because it certainly is a situation that requires rapid execution, but I felt it necessary to point this out because, when Gabriel takes over at the hardest part of the brawl, he doesnāt seem hurried at all.Ā
Now of course you do need to hurry, because peopleās lives are in danger here, but Gabrielās voice is nonetheless very calm and even. Even when he saysĀ āGet this door open, now!ā itās still relatively soft spoken. Whereas Morrison wouldāve sounded a little harsh (e.g.Ā āGet these jokers off my point!āĀ āGet this payload moving already!ā) Gabriel has an almost subtle sense of urgency in his tone, and an almost unnoticeable change in volume. Morrison speaks as if heās telling you that you must do something and do it immediately, whereas Gabriel speaks as if heās given you a task and expecting (as if itās merely a given) that youāll faithfully do it and thus he has no need to worry about it.Ā
In high risk Blackwatch missions, Gabrielās style of leadership is ideal. Blackwatch agents are the cleanup crew and handle theĀ ādirtyā missions that Overwatch wonāt. According to lore, this included assassination, coercion, kidnapping, and human rights abuses such as torture, all things that would need the agents executing these tasks to be in calm, orderly states of mind.Ā
Consider Talon, for instance, Sombra refers to Gabriel asĀ ābossā and seems fairly genuine about it, and heās clearly leading the mission in Infiltration (even if Sombra sortaā¦twists the whole thing a little). You can see Widowmaker quickly grow frustrated at missing her shot at Ms. Volskaya, and Reaperās immediately in her commā¦.and doesnāt sound particularly angry about the loss of the element of surprise. Ā
Gabriel seems very much like the type to roll with the punches, at least until everything goes to absolute shit (see: escaping target, thank you Sombra) and deal with the consequences when everythingās all said and done, while Morrison seems more the type to express displeasure the moment it happens. Again, neither of these are wrong styles of leadership from a military standpoint, but I think itās very interesting that Blizzard managed to work these styles in with just a few bits of dialogue in the brawl.Ā
TL;DR Gabrielās very soft spoken and calming, but factual and to the point, which is why I think the Blackwatch Commander position suited him nicely.Ā
Also the man sounds like angel? Have you ever heard a voice as soft and smooth as milk and honey
