Last year, I befriended a Catholic seminarian. We've gotten to be pretty decent friends. Seeing as he was staying in town for the summer and I wasn't, I entrusted him with caring for my plant.

He did a wonderful job, but as he was returning my plant to my custody, he explained "I watered her every other day, I gave her new dirt, moved her into the sunshine, prayed the rosary-"

"What?"

He looked at me, confused. "Isn't she a plant you pray with?"

"No," I said slowly. "She's a prayer plant. That's the... colloquial name of the plant."

Upon seeing his stricken face, I realized something went wrong. Turns out, this entire time, he's been including my plant in on his prayers and leaving her near icons.

Listen, totally cool. My plant becoming Catholic is a great deal for her not dying over the summer. But now I must navigate this interfaith household. Keep me in your thoughts.

i could keep going but i think that's a good enough start. if you look up the words in this post - "boymom incsstusous abuse" - you will see suddenly what everyone is talking about. it's a pretty big discussion going on right now. especially given the visibility that filiming and posting your children on the internet provides.

"boymoms" of course predate tiktok. i remember a lot of boymoms from the 90s and early 00s, where the boys were encouraged to behave however they wanted, and take whatever they wanted, all while the sisters were "mommy's little helper" or worse. lots of these kids i grew up with went on to commit acts of violence, because they were raised with that entitled position in life & genuinely did not understand why they were being punished for this. that is a theme you will see repeated if you study criminal cases with this dynamic.

incest (both overt and covert) create an inability in the victim to emotionally regulate; because the lines familially have been blurred, there is no one to teach them how to process their feelings, and instead they're left in a feedback loop where encouragement from the mother v. resentment from the other siblings & the father create a "black and white" worldview that is complex to detangle & impossible to navigate (because it doesn't translate onto reality at all.)

in many victim/survivor cases, the emphasis / focus on the identity of pride "mother of a boy" for mom, leads to the boy being dehumanized. this might look like being dolled up, or treated like an action hero, or "sonsband" wherein a son is treated as a/the husband. "my angel can do no wrong" or "he eats as much as he needs before the girls tuck in to whatever's left!" or "boys will be boys"/"he's just a boy"/"that is how boys are!" this is abuse. but it's a specific kind of abuse when the abuser takes that identity on as a point of pride - identifying herself through her victim.

it's less "you guys are deeply traumatized" and more "weirdos making this into a point of pride for their identity often reduces or flattens the object of their fetishization in a dehumanizing (traumatic) way". and I mean fetish literally here, not in a sexual slang way - the object or subject of one's fascination.

hope that made sense. i was a criminal law major/philosophy minor, so i have a tendency to talk weirdly, but i just wanted to clarify because it's a genuine gap and we all have those. i don't think this is you don't know slang or these people are traumatized and projecting, i think this is just a classic case of "abuse happens everywhere, yes, even there, yes, even that way, and once you see it you never stop seeing it."

Some time ago (I think in 2021) I had to go see a neurologist over really scary symptoms that resembled seizures. I was a nervous wreck about what I was feeling and had barely slept all week, which seemed to be apparent to the doc’s assistant when I sat down in the exam room for questioning or whatever. Dude was pretty young and soft spoken, around my age. He was laser focused doing something on one of those tablet-laptop Surface things as I spoke, presumably writing down my symptoms.

Midway through talking about my symptoms my voice audibly started shaking as I was describing them, clearly upset.

In the middle of my monologue he turns the tablet to face me, closes whatever program he has open and the wallpaper is this fucking collage of pictures of lord farquaad from shrek, lovingly decorated. Dude just sat there placidly smiling at me until I noticed and stopped dead in the middle of a sentence. We sat there in silence like this for like a solid minute before I started wheezing laughing. Before I could even say anything else or process it he picked up the tablet and wordlessly left the room, and I just sat there dumbfounded until the doctor showed up. 10/10 doctor experience tbh

(WalWaPo makes you jump through like three separate hoops before you can read the article, so I will share some of the highlights:

Walnut was born in a species-recovery breeding program in the 1980′s.  The program had crane chicks hand-raised by human volunteers, and at that time they did not fully understand the measures necessary make sure that the chicks do not imprint on humans and retain their identity as cranes.  

As a result, her keepers believe, Walnut does not recognize other cranes as members of her own species.  

It has not been proven that Walnut killed her previous suitors; however, there is a persistent rumor in the white-naped-crane-conservation community that she did.  

Because this species is highly endangered, and the gene pool of the captive population is small, it’s pretty important for the survival of her species that Walnut A) mate, and B) not kill a bunch of other cranes.  

The actual name of the keeper is Chris Crowe.

They both arrived at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute in 2004.   

Walnut immediately began paying special attention to Chris--and ignoring the eligible male crane in a nearby enclosure.  

Walnut initiated their courtship, performing the opening moves of a mating dance.  

Chris realized that if he reciprocated the mating dance, it might be possible to artificially inseminate Walnut with her participation and consent.  (The process normally involves restraining the bird.)  

It worked!  

Chris and Walnut have had five children, who were raised by other crane couples at the facility--sometimes the biological dad and his mate--both because it’s unclear whether Walnut would accept the chicks as her own, and because Chris is not equipped to be a Crane Dad.  

However, the Institute provides her with artificial eggs to sit on, and Chris takes his turn looking after them.  (This would not work with real eggs because he can’t sit on them properly, but Walnut seems to feel that he is on the job if he just stands over them.)

Chris accepts that he is pretty much married to this bird.  White-naped cranes live to be about 60, and they mate for life, so he knows he can’t retire while Walnut is alive.  (At the time of the article, Walnut was 36, and Chris 42.)

I regret being the bearer of bad news, but I thought it should be shared that Walnut passed away in January of this year (2024). There's a lot of mixed info about the lifespan of cranes (due to people misunderstanding what a median is...) but the average for most species I know of is 20-30 years (in the wild if nothing eats them/they don't die young), and 30-45 in captivity, with the oldest known white-naped crane having loved to be 46. Given that she was 42, this old gal did good, and I'm certain she will be missed by folks here.

Like I'm from a technological boom generation, saw the first portable phones, nokias & blackberries & flipphones etc, and the first smartphones, and the first ipods & ipads & tablets in general while still having cassettes & DVD & MP3 players around so I know how all of it work, I had computer classes in high school, I did the transition between home desktop computers to laptops and back to gaming computers. But then they started to put internet in your printer & microwave, everything has ads & AI now and every update is worst than the last. I literally loved technology and they ruined it
