This whole thing about scanning your face to prove tour age is making me remember, in 2018 while out in paris we got our wallet stolen during a particularly busy night at a lesbian bar. It was very late and with no money to buy metro tickets we were effectively stranded, but some people helped us and we ended up staying the night at a really sweet older man's place. His face was deeply scarred and he was missing an eye. We chatted on our way and he told me about his life, probably to help calm me down. He explained he had been stuck in a house fire 20 years ago and had had multiple rounds of facial reconstruction and a skin graft, but there's only so much surgery can do so he just learned to live with it. I remember he said he liked the queer bars because they're the only place people don't really stare at him.
At some point I took out my phone, and at the time I was using face unlock. This prompted him to tell me all the ways this technology doesn't work on him. How his phone selfie camera doesn't focus right because it's not detecting a face. How he had to update his ID the old fashioned way, because the website kept rejecting his photos. And how it was becoming more and more common, and how it was making his life way harder.
This was 7 years ago, and now whenever I see this sort of technology I think of how that guy can't use it. And how house fires are pretty common, and how anything from being born this way to a skin condition to heavy tattooing can probably cause the same issue. Can these people get age verified ? Will they just lose access to all social media, which are increasingly necessary in society, if this becomes the norm ? These are people who are already driven out of public spaces due to how they look, and they're getting pushed out online too all in the interest of companies wanting more money.
always remember the Final Girl Code:
- do it alone
- do it scared
- do it with a knife in your hand if you have to

romantic relationships blah blah blah okay but what about risking everything for your sibling. what about the unwavering love and care that can only come from a parent to a child. what about someone who just wants their best friend back. ever thought of that.
“how dare you say we piss on the poor” is perhaps THEE best piece of vernacular to come out of tumblr dot com in the past decade. along with “what were you doing at the devils sacrament” (cheeky. inspired. relevant in every context) and “harold, they're lesbians” (timeless. funny as hell. gay)
max volume isnt enough i need james marriott to punch me in the face
“paid subscription with ads” is fucking crazy. if you pay for a service and then get served an ad on said service you should be allowed to pipe bomb its executive at no legal risk
Love the word "also". I have more things to say

Some of Van Gogh’s best work was done during a period of his life that he spent in a hospital being treated for his mental health problems. I could be wrong but I think Starry Night was among those.
This is consistently the case. Creators tend to do their best work when they are in a healthy place and receiving proper treatment and not being self destructive in their efforts to cope. Go figure.
All our experiences, good and bad, inform what we create, but suffering is not the price of great art. Suffering is what prevents artists from completing great art.
(I bring to mind this @tkingfisher / Ursula Verson quote about once a week <3)
Trump ruins bacon.
Every Trump policy makes things worse.
context for the joke: upton sinclair’s the jungle is a book from 1906 about the meatpacking industry both about the working conditions and how unsanitary it was. it led to numerous laws about federal oversight on the meatpacking industry (specifically inspection) during what was known as the progressive era.
Time to stop buying any and all pork products until this is fixed. Spread it around. PORK BOYCOTT. Bacon isn’t worth debilitating sicknesses that you’re likely to catch now that standards are going to be lowered in the industry in order to save money.
Double checked this and it’s legit. I’d be really cautious about pork from here on out y’all.
This is also likely to negatively impact the health and wellbeing of slaughterhouse workers and meatpackers and other animal ag workers, who already tend to have inadequate access to health services. It’s already a dirty job, with high rates of work-related illness and injury, and with less inspection, the workers are likely to be pushed to work even faster. Pork manufacturing also is known to draw heavily on undocumented workers for its staff, workers who are already going to have less ability to stand up for their rights.
Immigration policies that leave crops unharvested, absolutely terrible work with foreign trade agreements, removing any real quality assurance in dangerous products (thus nobody will buy the products)... is the current American administration trying to tank each of their own industries in turn?
Buy local small farm hold meat whenever possible. Home kill or private property is always more likely to be be nice meat too. But this is America/American Pork. Australian pork is still happy buy that instead
My fellow Americans:
You can do something to protect yourself AND help your Jewish and/or Muslim communities at the same time. In case you haven’t noticed, we’ve been really struggling under hate crimes with the current administration in power.
FIND A KOSHER OR HALAL BUTCHER.
They will not have pork. However, other meat industries are also being deregulated, and you can get better beef and chicken through us.
I know the requirements for halal are slightly different than those for kosher, so if this crosses a Muslim’s dash I’m going to politely request, could you please share how they diverge, because I don’t want to misrepresent y’all?
Meantime, kosher requires:
—all of the following must be examined by a trained rabbi to ensure it’s being done correctly
—the animal must be raised humanely
—the animal must be disease-free
—the animal must be killed so quickly that it has no time to feel pain or fear. In Judaism this is accomplished by cutting the throat directly through both the main artery and the main nerve to the brain at the same time, and you have to train for YEARS to be able to do this and call yourself a kosher butcher.
Kosher butchers suffer from a lack of demand. You can keep your meat safe AND SUPPORT A STRUGGLING SMALL INDUSTRY.
Buy kosher and halal. Protect yourselves.
Chiming in with the Islamic perspective!
the animal must be permissible to be eaten (i.e. not a pig)
depending on who you ask, either a) the name of Allah must be invoked upon killing the animal or b) the name of any other deity must not be invoked upon killing the animal
big agree on the animal being killed quickly to avoid pain or fear. in Islam, the jugular is slit, along with the esophagus and trachea, with a non-serrated blade to ensure a quick, clean cut. the animal must not see the blade until the very last minute, and must not be decapitated. (a quick and painless kill also ensures the meat is less acidic.)
each animal must be killed in seclusion to avoid stress on the other animals; they cannot witness the slaughter of a fellow animal.
the animal must not already be dead. carrion is one of the forbidden foods in Islam. some facilities may use a stun gun to induce unconsciousness, but this can cause instant death and some argue that this renders the meat haraam (impermissible). other facilities may use electronarcosis to render the animal insensible.
all the blood must be drained from the animal; again, we are forbidden from consuming blood
the animal must not be handled (e.g. skinning; removing and cleaning organs) until after it has died
Buy from your local halal market and support Muslim businesses!!!
