@mushroom-sal
hey I just wanted to check if you wanted a cup of tea
I was experimenting with setting one skin for my laptop and a different skin for my phone and ended up with a halfway decent dark mode of my medieval skin by adding that one and my simplified low contrast skin together.
Still haven't figured out how to get totally separate skins based on screen size, but this was a fun little unexpected treat lol.
#this is kinda gorgeous actually #i wish i knew how skins worked
I'm going to start by telling you what skins do.
They basically take a website and put a little outfit on it. So for example, instead of having a white background, a skin makes it so that AO3 has a dark purple background. Or an image for a background. Or a gradient background.
Skins change the way the site looks, and those changes can be small (like what font is used or what the background looks like) or they can be large (changing a username to an icon, putting the filters on the left instead of the right).
The way that skins do that is through code. Websites are built in a code language called HTML. Skins are built in a language called CSS. What CSS does is modify the way HTML looks.
People like me think it's really fun to write CSS code that makes AO3 look different from the default site. We're fan coders (and sometimes professional coders), and we share our code with other people so that they can put a cute outfit on their AO3 account. Those other people don't need to code at all. They just have to copy our code and paste it into AO3.
(sidenote: I'm talking about site skins here, not work skins. Works skins just put a cute outfit on a specific fic, and the author does need to do a little bit of coding to apply those)
If you want to put a site skin on your AO3:
tap on your name at the top of the site and go to your Dashboard.
From there, select the link called Skins.
On the Skins page, tap on the button labelled Create Site Skin.
Give your site skin a unique name (if it's not unique on the Archive, you'll get an error and it won't save). I just add my nickname at the end of whatever I end up calling the skin. That usually works.
Copy the CSS code of a skin you like and then paste it into the big empty box labelled CSS.
Scroll to the bottom of the page and hit the Submit button. This will save the skin to your account, but it won't apply it yet. You can have dozens of skins saved if you want to.
After Submitting, AO3 will send you to a page that shows you the saved code for that skin. Scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page, and select the Use button. Now the skin will be applied to your account and AO3 will look different for you.
What I did here was create a new site skin that I just called "combo skin for pi" and I added my other two skins as a parent to it - essentially combining them together.
To add a parent skin, you can edit what you already saved or, after step 5 above you can select the button labelled Advanced, then on the button labelled Parent Skin and type in the name of the skin you want to add on.
You'll need to have both skins available to your AO3 account, so either save two (or more) custom skins from someone like me who posts code for folks or use one (or more) of the public skins that AO3 provides.

Things are bad and terrible and stupid but at least there's bugs and sweet fruit and queer little podcasts and the sky changes colour at dusk and dawn. I can go to a park and meet a dog. My conditioner smells like fake strawberries. My houseplants and herbs still grow, despite the weather outside. There's time for nature documentaries and solo TTRPGs and library books before bed and the birds still sing in the morning. And I still have the ability to make the rest of it just a tiny bit less bad and terrible and stupid.
Things are bad and terrible and stupid but at least there's clouds and pasta and my bedsheets are soft. The seasons change and things get greener and then colourful and I go sit in the sun for a while and I can try new veggies and then shelter indoors with a good book before the world gets greener again. I tell people I'm glad we met and they echo the sentiment and we talk about the new anime and podcast episodes that came out this week or send me pictures of frogs or their pets or tell me about their joys for the day or what they dreamed about last night.
My toothpaste tastes like fake watermelon and my supervisor tells me I did good to spot my own mistakes when I worry I've done something embarassing. I learn a new recipe and listen to new songs and the wind in the trees. My sibling buys me lunch and tells me they're trying to be a better person before explaining their newest interest in enthusiastic detail. And I keep trying to remember it's not all bad and terrible and stupid.
For all that I've seen a lot of PHM posts that go on about 'patron saint of [blank]' for Ryland Grace, I don't think I've seen any that address what amounts to the scientific version of that: Mother of/Father of.
In order to be considered for the title of Mother of/Father [scientific field], you have to be the first to make significant contribution in that field. You're setting the groundwork in a way nobody else has. This can obviously cause a lot of debate in the end about who gets the title! That said, I think given the leaps and bounds that Grace makes in several fields of science that take them from the more theoretical to the practical gives him some notable options with strong arguments. So we've got options like: Father of Astrobiology (the discovery and study of Astrophage, Taumoeba, several other forms of life on Adrian, and the study of and first interactions with the Eridians; disproving the Goldilocks zone as the only area viable for life; making significant strides in proving the panspermia hypothesis), Father of Xenolinguistics (first person to create working translator and archive of an alien language), and Father of Interstellar Travel (this would be a title held alongside Dr. Dmitri Komorov, likely with Komorov being listed first, and there would be significant debate on if Grace should hold the title at all. I like to think Dmitri would want to share it though).
All workable cases, all real options. Buuuuut I think my very favorite option though would be the one that is the least open to debate and is the one that I honestly think Grace himself would like best: Father of First Contact.
Because on the one hand, yeah, that's a lot he was mostly doing. First contact with Astrophage, with the Taumoeba, with other life on Adrian, and most of all with the Eridians. The first ever intelligent form of life outside of Earth, he made First Contact with. He found ways to communicate, to establish common ground, to work alongside an alien being. He did something no one else on Earth had ever done before and changed the world with it. He made First Contact and saved the world.
But mostly that means there's a whole field of science that Grace's name is attached to forever because he got to meet his friend. Mostly, Father of First Contact is just a fancy way to say "I love my friend."

And comments too from @securitycapecreature !
securitycapecreature
1- father of first contact is the cutest option and if you can only have one title that would be best
BUT
2- the funniest opinion imo is him getting several of those so hes one of those "this guy is fuckin everywhere" scientists (i imagine one day in the distant future a group of college kids get together and one of them can be talking about learning of this great biologist that made so many new discoveries and someone else goes "you mean the linguist??" "You mean the ASTRONAUT??" And everyones confused for a little bit until they figure it out)
mercifulmother
2 - This is the ideal vision yes yes yes yes! Grace really went out there and decided to do a 100% speedrun on revolutionizing different fields of science, and now children of the future are going to suffer about it forever. It gets even worse once the political science kids get involved in the conversation. "Do you mean the DIPLOMAT?" STEM vs Humanities showdown is brutal. Trying to write a paper about this man is an absolute nightmare because the interdisciplinary sources on him are in five different sections of the library at any given point. Finding his stuff in a bookstore is even worse.
securitycapecreature
@mercifulmother Ahhhh!!! Yesss oh my those poor kids, im half glad i dont live in that universe rn, his Wikipedia page is the stuff of nightmares
On the other hand, someone does that type of post where they post a screenshot of the "subjects" in a weird wiki page with no context and everyone in the comments identifies him Immediately cause who else
mercifulmother
@securitycapecreature His Wikipedia page is so long and its a nightmare to look at and it can never be confused for anyone else. Its one of the best places to fall into a wikipedia rabbit hole on because you can redirect in so many different directions. He's also the new spiders georg. "'Average scientist discovers 3 field revolutionizing things a year' factoid actually [sic] just statistical error. Average scientist discovers 0 field revolutionizing things a year. Dr. Cpt. Ryland Grace, who lives in space and discovers over 10,000 revolutionary facts each day, is an outlier adn should not have been counted."
I'm a big fan of all of this!!
Grace has come a long way from "no immediate family, you don't even have a dog". He's the Father of First Contact. For the rest of time, as long as human and Eridian civilizations last, at all the points where humans and Eridians (or even humans and other species, or Eridians and other species) meet and interact and find joy in each other, making their own personal First Contacts -- all of those people become Grace's family.
@avoid-avoidance Hey man you can't just make me cry on my own post like that, what the heck??? How dare you???? Like I'd halfway made a connection similar to that (more from a teaching perspective), but not with everyone who makes First Contact after him being Grace's family. I'm so glad you did cause that's beautiful, I love it.
That's his family forever! He's their family forever! He taught them all how to make first contact, how to be with another species, how to love in this totally new way, and that makes them his kids! He's the blueprint humanity learns from! He never stops teaching, and all his students are his kids, and now they're his family too! Augh I'm gonna go get some tissues now, I'm very emotional.
Anyways peer reviewed, highly approved, ten stars, sparkly good job sticker right at the top.

welcome to my blog im annoying
âWhen we were kids, the Phonics Wizard came to our town to show off how the letter E can change the sounds of vowels. He turned a can into a cane, a pin into a pine. This one kid had a cap and he changed it into a cape, that kind of thing.
âAnd we loved it, we were all having a great time, but then he saw my sister and I, and he just got this - this look in his eyes, and then-â
She hesitated, worrying the coarse material between her fingers. âThings got pretty bad after that,â she muttered. âI know itâs silly, but I try to keep - her - comfortable. We donât know if she can still hear us, or see us, or if sheâs even still in here, but I like to think she is. I talk to her when I can, I leave music on when Iâm out of the house. I tried to convince my parents to bring her with us when we went to Disneyland, but they didnât - didnât really take that well.â
After a moment, she put the ball of twine back onto its pillow. âAnyways. They tried to arrest the Phonics Wizard, but he had a plan in case something went wrong and he turned it into a plane and flew away.â
Hey if you have a chronically ill friend who is housebound, I'd like to take this opportunity to remind you to make contact with them. See if you can visit them (offer to sit in their room with them, tell them they don't need to worry about how clean it is), offer to bring them a meal or help with tasks they can't do themself, offer to go with them to a doctor's appointment, if they can leave the house sometimes let them know that the next time they have the energy they're welcome to come lie on your couch.
Housebound people feel free to add your own input, my housebound friend was able to visit recently and I was reminded of how isolating it can be for her. I love you and you deserve to get to see people in ways that don't hurt you more than they have to.
another comic about friendship

ADVICE FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE NOT HAVING A GOOD DAY:
wait until it gets dark and make tea or coffee or hot chocolate, or if itâs too hot outside make yourself a healthy smoothie with your favorite things in it at any point during the day
put on your favorite underwear, it helps, trust me, itâs an old family secret (iâm not kidding)
if you have a pet, play the âhow many things can i stick on you until you move or get madâ game (bonus points if they fall asleep, extra bonus points if a family member sees you and tells you to quit it, extra double ultra points if they join in)
rip a peice of paper into as many little pieces as you can
go to animeseason.com and click ârandom animeâ until you see one that looks completely ridiculous (or actually good) and watch the first episode. repeat if it sucked or if you get bored halfway through
spend at least an hour making a music playlist for how you feel right now and save it for now or when you feel a bad mood rise again
curl up in bed and cover yourself with blankets and pillows and put in music and just lay there for a while (sleeping is also good)
eat everything
drink lots of water
itâs okay bad moods donât last forever!!!!!! i promise!!! you will be yourself soon and there are people who love you very much, donât be afraid to reach out to them
you are lovely
eat lots of bananas
here are some more friends
i bet there is still a box of crayons in your house somewhere (if not you can get them cheap during back-to-school sales); find them and use them (maybe while watching ridiculous anime)
sunshine if you can manage it or just a sun lamp trust me it matters more than you think especially in winter
hugs even if they are stuffed animals or your pet or your pillow whatever is on hand
if youâve got a favorite lotion/soap/thing that is scented use it liberally
cry if you need, if it doesnât start by itself or if you donât want to attract attention put on a sad movie so you have an excuse
write this down to pull out on future bad days:
it is okay to have a day where you donât get things done
it is okay not to have a reason for feeling bad
taking care of yourself is a worthwhile use of time
if you still donât feel better it is not your fault (and it is okay to ask for help)
Gaming Dice.
I learned a lot about edges and light and color relationships here.
PAINTING!!! THIS IS A PAINTING
quick whatâs ur opinion on tea. everyone who sees this is obligated to answer in some way
I love tea
I've seen some posts trying to make fun of former gifted kids by comparing them to former student athletes who insist that they could have gone pro if not for a specific injury, and those posts always backfire, because my reaction to them is "You're right, we should treat former student athletes with more compassion than we currently do"
I went from being very physically active to getting the "your body doesn't make energy properly anymore" disability so I can completely understand the grief that comes with circumstances outside your control destroying parts of you you were once proud of and locking you out of the life you could have had. It's not a good feeling.
i feel so defensive and protective of people with ARFID like if i had a disorder that made my brain register 90% of food as poison for no reason and i had a bazillion people on the internet constantly calling me a manchild who needs to just grow up and stop being a picky eater i would start killing people
people with ARFID and people with very few autism safe foods and people with contamination OCD and people in ED recovery and everyone else with a complicated relationship with food that no one takes seriously GET BEHIND ME!!!!!!!
I'm kind of at a point where the "queer spaces" i feel safest in are the ones that have a pet cishet dude or two hanging around
When a space cares a lot about making sure its members are queer enough to participate, you get a space that aggressively polices the queerness of its members. There's no way around that, it's pretty much tautologically true. Only by paradoxically not actually caring if you're queer or not can a group really accept the full range of what queerness can look like.
Also, a space that has room for a cis straight guy who means well and wants the best for his friends has two crucial things going for it.
1) it has space for people who are learning and might fuck up a bit while they figure things out, and that learning process is probably not so godawful and unpleasant that a guy with other prospects would have to be a fool not to go find some nicer friends. This is nice because it is very difficult to personally embody the entire alphabet at once, and learning how to be good allies to one another is a crucial part of queer solidarity. It's nice for that process not to be painful.
2) it has space for people who aren't yet willing to or comfortable with presenting an externally queer label to continue to exist and soak up the queer vibes and information, which means it's welcoming to actual questioning people rather than the theory of questioning people. Probably it therefore has more interest in actually doing things rather than hierarchy politics.
3) it's probably not a radfem tar pit interested in weaponising you against people they've decided to hate in a social smear war that benefits nobody and nothing but their need for a power trip
Oh itâs even more than that! The cis straight guy is very often a ride home, dad or husband. Or a Bob which I will explain in this essay is a signifier of a healthy ecosystem, like frogs are.
This is a 3 am take so consider this a blanket apology and a readmore but if you hate this post you were warned.

And may I say, before the crowd of âself care isnât always funâ crowd rolls in⌠not with that attitude itâs not.
