This is NOT the first time something this devastating has happened, the effects of a salt lake going down like this can be and absolutely are ruinous. The Aral Sea is a stellar example of what happens when we let our saline lakes dry out and it’s *bad*

Water levels began declining in the 60s following a Soviet irrigation project and just kept going down, leading to practically a wasteland of salt and sand and, not unsurprisingly, loads upon loads of toxic fertilizers and chemicals from runoff that were left behind.

The Aral Sea is a complete ecosystem collapse, the pollution left behind is no joke and we’re not invincible as much as we’d like to believe. The sand has essentially become a toxic dust swept up in the air by wind, causing higher rates of certain illnesses and cancers in the surrounding communities. Not to mention this toxic dust contaminates other water sources, native wild life, and livestock.

You have to understand that the worst people in the world have all the same capacity for experience as everyone else, they just choose to do evil inexcusable shit with it. In a strange way I think this is part of the banality of evil. Making good art or having profound feelings or whatever else doesn't make someone ethical in any way, it just makes them an alive person.

We do not humanize people like that to excuse their behaviours or encourage empathy with them at the expense of those they hurt. We need to humanize them so that we understand no one, no matter what they made or how it spoke to us, is guaranteed to be trustworthy or be safe to be around or to be who they say they are.

One of the most upsetting but important things in the world is listening to an acoustic cover of a band's most heartfelt song and thinking abt what a piece of shit the writer was even as the lyrics spoke to me.
