this is about your primer post. i’m really interested in understanding the narratives of the eagles. i’m not a football fan(not american) so i’m unfamiliar in general but the way you talk about jalen hurts and things i’ve been seeing online since i started deep diving after the draft have been so interesting and dividing? like the aj thing with him wanting out? i’m just really in hearing your thoughts. thank you 🙏
asking me to talk about jalen hurts..
first thing to know is that i am a jalen hurts truther. if he has no fans i've been erased from existence because even if i was dead i would make everyone at my funeral become fans of him as my dying wish. second thing to know is i genuinely look up to him as a person, like my ride or die feelings towards him is not just because he's the quarterback of my favorite football team, i truly think his story and personality is very admirable and i strive to reach his work ethic and mentality.
basic background on him because i feel is important to understanding why he's so admirable. jalen grew up in texas, where his dad was a football coach. he played for alabama his freshman year, where he led them to the national championship. his sophomore year, he again led them to the national championship BUT got benched in the second half for tua tagovailoa who then finished the game and won bama the natty. of course, this benching became the main talking point of his college career— getting sat in the biggest game of your life is a miserable affair. but he was truly 10000% happy for tua and for his team for winning. i think it would have been fair for him to be a bit peeved but if you watch clips of bama winning, he is all class. a peek into his winning is everything, no i in team mentality. his junior season, he officially became the backup to tua, but then in SEC championship when tua got hurt, jalen came in and led a comeback victory. just crazy. jalen then transferred to oklahoma his final year, mainly so he could be the starter. also fun to note is he's earned both a BA (2018) and MA (2023 while in the nfl).
anyways, that's all to say, he's had a great mentality for team sport. the ability to bounce back from being benched in the natty, handle everything with class, always doubted but keeping the main thing the main thing, which continued even to the draft where he got drafted in the second round. this is a guy that's essentially always been doubted mainly because people call him a "running back" due to lower passing numbers/ability than the typical quarterback. when the eagles drafted him he was originally the third string, like people did not have high expectations.
ok now this is going to get more rambling. jalen became the eagles starter for the 2021 season, where they made the playofffs but got bounced first round and weren't like. a good team. so again, not much expectations going into the 2022 season but jalen said fuck that shit fuck a long rebuild and howie roseman the gm said yeah fuck that and got a bunch of major pieces, including aj brown and a bunch of defensive weapons. the 2022 season was glorious. i genuinely shed tears for some games. the eagles were fucking amazing and aj brown and jalen seemed to be the IT qb-wr duo for our future. jalen literally finished second in mvp voting imo only because he got minorly injured towards the end of the season and missed games. like if he played the full season he would've won it. 35 touchdowns to 6 interceptions are we fuckingn kidding!?!??!?!!? they went to the super bowl where he played OUTSTANDING even better than mahomes but.. anyways. whatever.
now the 2023 season.. sigh. so the issue with going to the super bowl is other teams will start swooping in and looking for people to steal from your team. which in this case, were our offensive coordinator (shane steichen, he is amazing and i miss him) and defensive coordinator (jonathan gannon, he fucking lost us the super bowl whatever). the eagles replaced the coordinators internally which then started a miserable season. this year is a rant in itself but this was really when the jalen hurts doubters crawled out of the sewers. allegations of like, oh he's only good in really good coaching schemes, oh he's losing the room, he's not a good leader, you don't get a mid-season collapse if the qb is actually good, etc etc. yet, within this frustrating season is one of my favorite games of his, the overtime win over the bills. i love this game because the eagles defense was actually so ass😭and per usual everyone was in love with josh allen but we fucking beat them. and josh allen continues to never win in over time.
2024 was our super bowl winning season. now again, despite the eagles having a great record etc etc, jalen got doubted. people were saying the defense was carrying (we did have a generational defense but jfc that doesn't make the offense nonexistent??), he's a coordinator merchant (we got a new oc and dc who were much better than 2023), and the apex of the jalen aj brown drama starting. the main gist is like aj wanted more targets?? but our offense, especially since this was the year we added saquon, was always going to be rush first. anyways there were incidents like him reading a book on the sideline during their wild card win, yelling at the coaches during the super bowl, and even after the super bowl win, aj posted a cryptic ass instagram post about how he wasn't satisfied with a ring and essentially wants more individual success. all very tiring stuff as an eagles fan. a moment from this season i will never forget was when jalen was described as having "pretty privilege" by an espn analyst. real thing that happened on live television on espn.
then the 2025 season happened which kindof was like a repeat of the 2023 collapse because our oc got poached again and again we hired internally and now kevin patullo is a name equivalent to the devil in the delaware river valley. increased talk about jalen being overrated, carried by his team his gm, being a bad leader, whatever the fuck. and aj was at his biggest stirring the pot with weird answers in post game interviews, and even after a big game where he had good numbers, posting captions like "using me but not using me", deleting his old tweets that praised jalen, it was such a shitshow. this season was miserable and also why i started watching the flyers because the eagles were not deriving joy like as i said in the 2023 season it was also a collapse but the games were good this season was just drama and such offensive mismanagement torture of sitcom proportions. highlights include patullo's house getting egged then an eagles player bringing in a giant easter bunny inflatable into the locker room as a way to lift the vibes. truly it was just something else.
anyways all that to say aj brown is 99% getting traded in june because we literally drafted a wide receiver. no one will ever know what really happened between him and jalen, but something definitely did because jalen is literally the godfather of his kid and now it's like.. he doesn't want to be quarterbacked by him anymore. it sucks, honestly, because aj is a great player but clearly the locker room vibes were horrible and it's going to be no good forcing him to stay and continuing to create bad vibes. if you won a ring and been to two super bowls and had career seasons and still want to leave, well, go ahead i guess.
truth is, jalen is perfect type of person you want as a quarterback for a major sports city. he keeps his private life private, he is normal as possible to the media, and he does not give a fuck what other people say about him. truly he has suffered more than jesus because of the slander that national broadcasts, philly sports media, and literal own eagles fans have thrown at him. if he would ever want to leave i would fucking cry my eyes out but i would understand because he does not deserve what has been thrown at him and to handle it with all such class.
specific slander off the top of my head: tush push merchant controversy where people used that against him but then when josh fucking allen ran it all the time no one gave a fuck, eagles fans asking for tanner mckee (white qb, our backup) to start last season because jalen was playing meh and then he did start a game and was fucking horrible, the genuine conspiracy theory that i believe that patullo was the "locker room insider" feeding reporters that jalen had "lost the room" go fuck yourself patullo can not show his face anywhere north of florida ever again (he's with miami now), constant knocks about how jalen is more of a runningback more than a qb which 1) is 100% racially charged and 2) is 100% incorrect because he has one of the best deep balls in the league, everyone somehow glossing over him WINNING A SUPER BOWL and outplaying mahomes in both like he RISES TO THE OCCASION IN BIG GAMES which is 10x more than you can say about literally every other "elite" qb, the fact that he has had a different offensive coordinator EVERY SINGLE SEASON SINCE FRESHMAN YEAR OF COLLEGE that's fucking crazy there's so many different plays and schemes you just constantly have to memorize fresh at the start of every season like no other qb has had to do this and still thrive, the fact that his head coach is a bum (can't get into this now) and jalen is carrying the team vibes constantly, just constant talk about how he has a "super team" etc etc like yeah football is a fucking team sport??? that's the point??? and if he does have a super team then why did everyone pick the chiefs for super bowl 59?? jalen hurts is the only athlete in the world where he gets blamed for the team's front office being good. like how does that logic apply. im genuinely convinced it's a combination of philly sports anti-bias + racism + male jealousy + did i say racism.
anyways i love jalen hurts because there is no other big game athlete like him his rise in numbers deep in the postseason is crazy and i think that's a testament to his mental strength and ice cold 'win or nothing' demeanor. he doesn't care about individual accolades like passing numbers etc he will thrive in whatever system ensures the most team success with zero complaint. and as a fan i never have to worry about him because you know every offseason he's working to improve himself. he's a sicko and he's our sicko and he will do whatever it takes to win which maybe rubs the wrong way to certain fans/players/coaches but if you can't buy into the mentality you're better off not on the team.
also i think the rise of slander about him due to "lesser" individual accolades like rankings in numbers is because of fantasy football and sports gambling. who gives a fuck how many passing yards he hit if the eagles won. and who gives a fuck if matt stafford threw for 400 yards because he stat padded if the rams keep losing to every version of the jalen hurts eagles???? so again, more reason why slander towards him is evil and wrong because it's partially based on sports gambling.
this got me thinking about super bowl 57 again and it genuinely makes me emotional. he put the team ON HIS BACK and the defense could not make a single stop. went drive for drive against mahomes and a good chiefs team and lost on a heartbreaking bradberry holding call. it was painful. he made the picture of him walking off the field with chiefs colored confetti as his phone background as motivation for the next two years. that's the wonderful sicko mentality he has. and then he got his lick back two years later in glorious fashion bro i cried when he threw the dagger.
he's the epitome of a philly sports athlete and he's already etched into history for the super bowl win. constantly doubted, constantly made into a spectacle, but he quietly puts the work in and lets his performances on the big stage speak for themselves. i would love to have even a third of his poise and mental strength. he could do nothing more the rest of his career with the eagles and i would still love him. but that won't happen because he is always striving for improvement for himself and the team, and so long as he is the starting qb, we will always be a contender and i think that's fucking beautiful.
i'll always be a big proponent of the intangible aspect of elite athletes, because once you hit a professional level, everyone is amazing. what separates the great from the good is what you do with your skills and abilities, and jalen has separated himself. my theory with this is like yes, other qbs have higher ceilings than him, like if you had 100% josh allen vs 100% jalen hurts, allen would be higher. but it doesn't FUCKING MATTER if josh allen can never be 100% in big games, the limiting factor is the mental strength. every fucking elite qb is "if-man" when compared to jalen "oh if herbert had an offensive line, oh if joe burrow didn't destroy his foot, if the bills got that fourth and one" like ok i can play that game "if bradberry didn't grab smith-schuster's jersey then jalen hurts would have two rings and two superbowl mvps" and now no one wants to play that game anymore.
or like 100% joe burrow vs jalen. sure burrow has played well in big games so he has the mental strength but he DOESN'T PLAY BECAUSE HE'S INJURY PRONE!!! that's another thing, to a certain extent, injuries are not 100% accidental and unpreventable. there's no way to measure it, but just from my experience with sport like i think there are aspects where you can knock a professional athlete for always being hurt and unavailable— jalen has never missed more than three games a season since he became a starter.
