It Appears that Ryland Grace Saw His Possible Future in Erid
Spoilers for the Project Hail Mary movie.
After giving his crewmates a proper "burial", Grace sat alone in the 360-degree screen room (dubbed the "Don't Go Crazy" room). He chooses a scene of a Bay Area beach. You would notice that his hair was being blown by the gentle ocean breeze, which was quite strange unless there were air vents in the area. The screens turn into a seamless view of the ocean. Was Grace dreaming? Was he having a hallucination? Was the loneliness getting into his head?
He looked to his right and saw someone from afar walking towards him. The person was a bit blurry, but it looks like the person wore a white sweater, similar to what Grace frequently wears. Then, suddenly, the holographic beach beneath his feet turned into actual beach gravel, and ocean water came rushing to his feet. Then he snapped out of it when the Hail Mary warned that its engines were slowing down to stop in the Tau Ceti System, and he was back in the screen room.
In this scene, Ryland Grace may be experiencing more than just a hallucination; he could be witnessing a temporal anomaly caused by extreme time dilation. It takes the Hail Mary 12 light-years to travel from Earth to Tau Ceti, but because of time dilation from near-light-speed travel, Grace had experienced traveling inside the ship for just 4 years. As the ship traveled through space at nearly the speed of light, the traditional boundaries of time may have begun to blur. And it seems Grace's future is "catching up" to his present, providing a glimpse of his eventual life on Erid.
This vision occurs at Grace’s absolute lowest point of isolation, serving as a cosmic reassurance. The figure in the distance, wearing a sweater identical to his own, represents the life he will eventually build with Rocky. In this moment, the universe offers him a brief, physical connection to his destiny—proving that despite his current solitude, he is not destined to be alone.
