Donald Trump's election has thrown an apparent lifeline to beleaguered coal producers but he may not be able to do much to revive the fortunes of the industry.
After an election season full of promises to rural America, we shall see what Trump will actually be able to deliver on.
What else can we do to help suffering rural economies, other than trying to jumpstart a coal industry that is being choked by the capitalism that once supported it?

To be fair, Canada comes at #9 on the list of biggest CO2-emitting countries, at approximately 10% of what the US emits... and per capita, they still emit less than the U.S.

The US ranks behind many developed countries in traffic safety, with automobiles killing nearly 34,000 people a year. That’s equivalent to a Boeing 747 crashing and killing everyone on board every single week, year after year. If planes were crashing once per week, would you consider it safe to fly? While we call these things accidents, the truth is our roads are far deadlier than they need to be. One of the things we can do to avoid so much carnage is redesign streets to slow down the automobiles.

The CDC notes that though only 1 percent of trips are made by bike in the US, cyclists face a higher risk of crash-related injuries than drivers.
This may be the only time I get to say I'm in the 1%.

Intermittent is not the same as unreliable.
Renewable energy costs are upfront and primarily in installation/construction; fossil fuel energy costs are hidden in tax breaks, environmental issues, and health problems.
No one has ever proposed a purely wind or purely solar power grid. Energy systems should be diverse and follow an "all of the above" approach.
With more fossil fuel use "...every measure of human well-being life has been getting better and better" - for first world countries, or if you aren't a small island state.

Offshore wind has a long way to go, but this is great news for wind energy in general.
I can imagine that for people of color life in a white-majority context feels a bit like being on a bicycle in midst of traffic. They have the right to be on the road, and laws on the books to make it equitable, but that doesn’t change the fact that they are on a bike in a world made for cars.

I think that the above paragraph is misleading -- the environmentalists and oil industry are not teaming up against wind, they are just both in opposition.
More than two-thirds of sub-Saharan Africans lack electricity, according to U.S. government figures. In rural areas, that climbs to 85%. Sub-Saharan Africa is expected to need more than $300 billion in investment to reach universal electricity access by 2030.
There are a lot of similarities between this wind energy battle and those that rage all across the U.S., underscoring the importance of planning, education, and public relations in renewable energy installment.
Just as the concept of protected bike lanes is gaining traction in U.S. cities, a designer takes the idea a step further.
I wouldn't be surprised if this design was adopted in Portland, but I'm not sure that the US is ready to curtail auto rights like that. Don't get me wrong - I want more Netherlands in our US cities, and more people casually riding bikes for transportation (and not for a workout).
Just think - we could conserve oil AND reduce healthcare costs!
It's a sign of how new the modern protected bike lane is to the United States that, scientifically speaking, we have known very little about them. Until now.
