So I wanna address something that I've noticed recently in fandom spheres in general (this is specifically going to the tkdb fandom bc I'm still hyperfixated on it right now)
I understand a lot of you guys may be younger and haven't interacted in fandom the way some of us older folks have. And that's fine, but I wanna explain how you can do that!
Because right now a lot of the artists and writers are feeling a little underappreciated and that means we don't really wanna work on requests or events bc they aren't getting a lot of interaction.
First, this isn't an influencer/audience relationship. We're all real people with jobs and lives outside of this, we do it for the love of the game. If you think it's weird or parasocial to try to talk to the person making the art you enjoy that's an issue. Nobody is famous, we're all being goofy ass people playing toys together. Make a comment, reach out to that author if they made your day better!
This is going to sound ridiculous but use youtuber logic: like, comment, subscribe follow! Because chances are with how small our fandom is that your comment is going to be seen and possibly inspire someone to keep going!
Likes are nice, but reblogs are better. If you aren't sure if you want it on your main blog that's fine. You think this is my main? Most of us are on side blogs. Make a little side blog for stuff you enjoy. Tag it so you can find it again. Use the character names or pairings or whatever you want. That's a way to bookmark the work you reblogged so you can find it easily.
Not sure what to really say to someone? If you've never interacted before just be polite but casual. It's a lot like making new friends irl but we have a level of anonymity that is comfortable here. Just don't demand things or try to befriend someone just because you want them to write or draw for you. You won't always hit it off with everyone but just be genuine and kind. You might make friends or just become acquainted, like someone you say hey to when they pass by but aren't close to.
As far as the etiquette of tagging and commenting goes-
Commenting is the reply feature. It goes in a separate thing attached to the work you're commenting on, and it has a larger character limit than the tags. Anyone can reply to you there so it's always good to @ who you're addressing.
Tags you add to the post when you reblog it. They aren't an actual edition to the post. But this is where you can add your keywords for searching for it later. When reblogging there's a feature to include some of the previous person's tags. If you do < or <- at the start of your tag that's indicating that you're referring to what that tag is talking about.
Both of these places are great places to talk about what you like about the work! They are public though so keep that in mind. If you want to talk just to the artist then use messages. Seriously don't be afraid to just start a message to someone it's just like going up and starting a conversation with a person.
But Pom, what do I say? I'm so glad you asked. For me, and a lot of the artists I've seen discuss this, it's not the quality of the message that's important. You can literally just say that character is so cute! Or, this is my favorite line! ❤ And that makes me happy! You can literally just use emojis and keysmashes -> (ajshhdjskakfhakskhf) and I'll get that you enjoyed it lol.
If you're unsure you can look at what other people have added! Some of us go off in our reblogs about how much we love it or how that lighting is incredible or the prose is insanely beautiful! You don't have to match that. Just acknowledging that you enjoyed it is good. Say something about how you hope the next piece is gonna be just as good! Or thank the author for the food lmao.
There's a lot of ways to interact with the artists in fandom. I personally reached out and interacted with one of my favorite ones here on Tumblr and now we message daily and have best friend ocs!
Tldr: If you want content to consume <- nah let's call it what it is. If you want art to enjoy and fic to read, interact with the artists and authors. Show some love with reblogs and comments. It makes us feel like we did a good job and gives us the energy to continue! Lurking is a choice and I for one am so glad I stopped watching people play and started playing with every one. So come on! We're waiting on you guys to join us! Come scream with us about blorbos and crazy theories! ❤💚❤💚
well seeing how much traction this post has gotten i am very glad i made a post about feeling like this on my side blog!
thank you pom for writing all of this up im sure it took a long time.
i've been trying my best to add in depth tags for as long as ive been in this fandom on as many posts as i can, but i can't reach them all. im only one person, but i know my impact has made a hell of a difference in this fandom. im confident in that much.
i think also, people may only think that long tags are valuable, and that if it's not long tags then it's better to just reblog and not say anything. i'm here to tell you that a simple "this was so good!" is infinitely more likely to make an authors day than a wordless reblog, and a wordless reblog is infinitely better than a like. find which one feels best for you.
i've had this discussion so many times from fandom to fandom that it's honestly exhausting. unfortunately writing is one of the loves of my life so im not going to stop doing it, but i doubt i will ever take requests from people who aren't my friends again.
pom worded this in a very friendly way and i wish i could word mine as bubbly as that :C unfortunately i am tired! i am exhausted! and i don't want to pour my heart out and be met with absolute silence anymore!
sharing the love we all have for these characters should not feel like that and im sad we are in a fandom where it does.
Thank you both so much for saying this out loud! This is so important! I've been meaning to post something similar at some point, but I could not find a way to phrase my thoughts. I'm sad this is a common experience, but I believe posts like this will help.
I do want to add two things, because I feel like this exemplifies some of the points...
Personally, for context, I started this for fun, and I'm a broke postgrad student with multiple jobs, and quite shortly after starting this blog I went through a lot of personal issues (also why I haven't reached out to others that much, y'all seem very cool, sorry for that, I will do better)
The tags with additions and comments I got were sometimes the only thing that pushed me through working on drafts or even wanting to keep going with this in the first place, even the shortest comments made such a difference! Both in my desire to keep writing for this blog, and for my day in general.
This one is unfortunate, but because I went radio silence a few times, I did (and I hope this isn't the case for other creatives in this space) get multiple asks/messages demanding I post more with somewhat aggressive language. This did not feel like encouragement, it felt very uncomfortable, because of course I want to finish requests and drafts, but I also do not know you in person, and I don't know if you are joking or not, so it's easier to assume you are not. I did also see vague posts complaining about lack of posting in general... Remember, writers and artists in fandom spaces do everything for fun and for free, hence another reason as to why engagement is so important.
This is a new-ish fandom, we haven't been around for long, and we're a small-ish community on tumblr, so unlike joining an older fandom, there isn't going to be much art and writing immediately - these things take time, and the more we'll be around the more there will be of it. I also want to encourage everyone to give these things a try yourselves, write, draw, make headcanons, etc, this is fun and you won't lose anything from giving it a go! As Pom said in the end, stop lurking :)
This is the first fandom i've not been a lurker in, and I do not regret it, but, again, as mentioned, we are all just people here to have fun, and sometimes there's things that get in the way of having fun, so let's all be kind and have fun together.

I wish I took a better pic of this writing in a bar bathroom in toronto bc I think of it so often. Be So Completely Yourself That No One Is Attracted To You Or Wants To Employ You
Kinda wild how most people generally recognize that the "too sick to go to school, too sick to watch tv/play games" mindset our parents had was bullshit but still impose essentially the exact same rules on disabled adults and scrutinize them for enjoying low-energy hobbies while being too fatigued or in pain to work a full time job (or any job at all)

important reminder that most people you follow online are significantly lamer than you think they are including me. and if you feel insecure comparing yourself to someone online: DON'T. theyre probably also lame and weird. most people on the internet are
reblog if you're also lame and weird.
you know its fine for things to be weird, right. like it actually doesn't matter that much if something is abnormal. there isn't a moral weight to being abnormal. you understand that, don't you? because a lot of people will never be "normal". and there will, because of how humans as a social group work, always be a concept of what "is" normal. there will always be some kind of "normal" and some people will never be able to be "normal". it's not morally bad to be weird. it's not meaningful at all. weirdness just is. we all know that, don't we?
Bro absolutely COOKED with this.
If you ever hear the phrase "fascism is aesthetics as politics," that's what this post is talking about.
It's not about being tough on crime, because the absolute toughest most brutal measure you could take against "crime" as a social problem is to alleviate poverty, and increase access to education, healthcare and social mobility.
It's about performing "tough on crime" as an aesthetic by enacting violence against a prop, i.e. minorities and the impoverished, who are fetishized and objectified to represent "crime." They are brutalized as punishment for crime, but never with the purpose of alleviating the problem of crime.
This is why a lot of conservatives and other right wingers can get straight up angry when you suggest things like reform or social measures to reduce crime. They don't want crime to be reduced, they want an eternal war against "crime" because it provides an arena for the righteous to demonstrate virtue by brutalizing their enemies.
you: Oh no I can't write this, my writing is too generic and derivative, it's all just a copy of a copy of a copy with nothing original or unique to it. I suck and I have no original touch. also you: Oh no I can't write this, my writing is too self-indulgent and tailored to only please my own specific preferences and interests. It's too weird and perverse and nobody else writes weird shit like this. I suck and I must be more normal.
also some of you you: I have this weird fetish I cannot speak to anyone about, because it's so obscure and far-fetched that I've never even found porn about this specific thing. I'm the only person in the world who even has this kink. I hope nobody notices that I've let some of that slip in here. the second person in the world who has that kink: [vibrating with lust hard enough to be used as paint mixer] H-hho-hhooll-hollyyyyy sh-hhh-hhhiiiiii-iiit
