The fact that homelessness is controversial tells you everything you need to know about conservatives.
the Columbia University arrests are worse than they seem. They're arresting protesting students for trespassing. It goes without saying students cannot meaningfully "trespass" in the common areas of a university they attend. So Columbia University has suspended all student protestors from their institution, in the process revoking their access to housing, their belonging, and most crucially damaging their academic futures. We are witnessing full scale silencing and removal of anyone of conscience from the next generation of academia.
beyond that the columbia common is literally an open space during the day; the gates are open and it's possible to pass through it like you'd pass through a regular block. even after my student ID expired i was still able to walk through the commons bc ID is not requested until you enter an actual building. it's quite common to see parents, toddlers, and such who are clearly not enrolled just hanging out. so not only were the students not trespassing at a SCHOOL THEY PAY FOR, there was also not a precedent for non-students to be disallowed from the grass and walkways.
somehow the poor cops who we were told are simply too understaffed and underpaid because of Woke to deal with 'rampant rising crime' have found the strength to beat the shit out of college students across the whole country for peacefully saying "divest from the country killing innocent palestinians in the tens of thousands"
btw its actually crazy that plantation tours are a thing that exist in the u.s. and that theyre not all set up like memorials similar to concentration camp museums like how is this marketed as a chill tourist activity or wedding destination and not extremely disturbing and depressing to see. worthless country
CAN YOU HEAR US??
a helpful slideshow created by my friend @the-celestial-bitch and her sister who can no longer access her blog from her country and has asked me to post in her stead instead
this is what she said:
this is a direct response to all the people whose reaction to whatâs happening in iran is a calling them islamophobic and blocking them, furthering the oppression theyâre experiencing by the governmentâs hands. please read this, and repost it on Twitter or Instagram and stop the misinformation from spreading
Islamic Republic of Iran killed her in the protest over the murder of Mahsa Amini.
Nika Shakarami, 17 years, vanished during the protest.
After a week, security forces delivered her dead body with her nose fully smashed & her skull broken from multiple blows.
There is a lot to write about Nika Shakrami. A lot needs to be said. The story of this child was the dirtiest and most painful crime of these lives in these eighteen days. This girl was sixteen or seventeen years old. They knew because his birth certificate was with him. Don't kill him on the street.
Her WhatsApp, Instagram and Telegram accounts were deleted after the phone was turned off. Before the phone turned off, when they were chasing this kid, she called her friend and said that they were following me. They took passwords from Nika Zind. What did they do to this child that they did not dare to take his body for ten days?
Three times before handing over his body, his family said that Kahrizak is not here.
What did they do to this child who stole the body and buried it in a remote place during his funeral?
What was known about that body so afraid to take a picture?
They took his aunt and uncle and told them to keep quiet or we will kill you. J. A. Binin news agencies. For every other case, they give out ten thousand denials and nonsense. For this, see how to suffocate. The nation should avoid the blood of this child.
serious post. start combating any misinformation you find. monkeypox is not an sti. monkeypox spreads through *any form of contact*. it is not exclusive to gay people, and it is *not* gay people's fault. we can not let history repeat itself. don't let flashy headlines take the place of medical facts and information.
conservatives are already itching to start a witchhunt against LGBT people and monkeypox is something they are going to latch onto.
don't let them. don't let this turn into a repeat of the AIDS crisis.

I will continue amplifying voices like this re: the latest public health crisis, monkeypox, because the media isnât. Iâm not about to watch the LGBTQ community be victimized by our systemâs incompetence or be villainized by the Right if this spreads further and weâre then blamed as we were for HIV/AIDS.
I hope youâll help me spread the word.
In light of my recent monkeypox post, A LOT of people seem confused or unaware of the growing public health concern. Hereâs some high level info
Monkeypox is a rare disease from the same virus family as smallpox. Since May â22, a concerning outbreak has been occurring across many countries, including the US, that historically have not reported the virus
Symptoms can include fever, headache, muscle aches and backache, swollen lymph nodes, chills, exhaustion, and a rash that can look like pimples or blisters that appears on the face, inside the mouth, and on other parts of the body
The current outbreak appears to be spreading mostly through close, intimate contact with someone who has monkeypox. It can spread via direct contact with the infectious rash, scabs, or body fluids; respiratory secretions during prolonged, face-to-face contact; touching items that previously touched the infectious rash or body fluids; and pregnant people can spread the virus to their fetus
Most of the confirmed cases of monkeypox are men who have sex with men (MSM). This is not because MSM are biologically more susceptible to monkeypox. MSM generally have a better relationship with medical practitioners than heterosexual men, so they are more likely to get tested. Monkeypox is likely a concern for the broader public too
Good news: We know a lot about monkeypox (unlike the case with COVID). It is not transmitted as easily as COVID and is not as deadly. Two vaccines already exist
Bad news: In the US, the Biden Admin is dragging its feet on vaccine roll out. Most people, even at-risk populations, canât get them yet. Most people are also unaware of this outbreak because the media is failing to inform the public. I hope this post helps shrink the info gap a little bit. Please consider spreading the word and adding to this post with more info and resources
how abortion bans will/do disproportionately impact indigenous people, by a Menominee person with a uterus.
Abortion bans are oppressive and dehumanizing and dangerous to anyone who can become pregnant. And the people who are the most highly impacted by these laws are certain minorities. This post is focused on how reproductive rights violations impact Indigenous First Nations communities in particular, please do not derail this post or make post additions unless you are Indigenous American.Â
(note: many of my sources use gendered language that excludes non-women who can become pregnant. i am aware of this and am unhappy about it, but i will still be using reliable data and quotes from these sources.)
Based off of United States statistics, Native American people are the most likely to be sexually assaulted out of any racial demographic in the US by a large margin.Â
- On average, American Indians ages 12 and older experience 5,900 sexual assaults per year. - American Indians are twice as likely to experience a rape/sexual assault compared to all races. - 41% of sexual assaults against American Indians are committed by a stranger; 34% by an acquaintance; and 25% by an intimate or family member.
(source [x])
A nationally representative survey indicates that while almost 18% of white women and 7% of Asian/Pacific Islander women will be raped in their lifetimes, almost 19% of black women, 24% of mixed race women, and 34% of American Indian and Alaska Native women will be raped during their lifetimes.
(source [x])
Sexual assault and rape are indescribably traumatic experiences in and of themselves, even without the layer of potential for unwanted pregnancy. But pregnancy after being raped does occur. Almost 3 million people in the U.S. have experienced rape-related pregnancy. (source [x])
94% of rape victims experience post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) following their assault. (source [x]) People who suffer from PTSD are caused extreme psychological distress by things and experiences and people that remind them of the traumatic event(s) that they suffered through. Finding out that you are carrying your rapistâs fetus can and does majorly inhibit and set back the ability to heal and recover from PTSD.Â
And even without this factor, many people who experience rape-related pregnancy are children, disabled in ways that would make it dangerous or even fatal to carry out a pregnancy/childbirth, unable to access the resources required during pregnancy/childbirth, or otherwise unfit or unwilling to go through a full pregnancy and childbirth.Â
Native Americans have the highest teen pregnancy rates in the U.S.
According to a 2018/2019 study, Indigenous populations in the U.S. have the highest percentage of teen births out of any racial demographic.
(source: [x])
Teen pregnancy and birth is often incredibly damaging to the victimâs psyche. Teen birthing parents are twice as likely to experience post-partum depression than birthing parents of an appropriate age, have higher rates of other depressive disorders, have higher rates of suicidal ideation, and have higher rates of PTSD. (source [x])
Not only are there often grievous mental health consequences to teen pregnancy, more than 50% of teen birthing parents will receive a high school diploma, and only 2% will receive a degree before the age of 30. (source [x])
Teen birth rates will only go up if abortion is outlawed. This will disproportionately impact Indigenous communities, who already suffer from low graduation rates and high mental illness rates.Â
Native Americans have higher pregnancy and abortion rates in general.
-Urban AI/AN [American Indian/Alaska Native] were more likely to have had three or more pregnancies and births than NH-whites [Non-Hispanic Whites]. High fertility rates were also seen among young urban AI/AN women age 15-24 years. - Urban AI/AN reports of 2 or more abortions was twice that of NH-whites (10% vs. 5%).
(source [x])
This one is fairly self-explanatory. If a certain demographic is receiving more reproductive care, they will be more impacted by legislation making it difficult/impossible to access that reproductive care.Â
Native Americans have the highest poverty rate out of any racial demographic in the U.S.
(source [x])
Carrying out a pregnancy, going through childbirth, and raising a child are all things that are made much more difficult by economic disprivilege, especially in the US, where healthcare is very expensive, especially without insurance.Â
The estimated cost of a pregnancy and birth in the United States is $30,000 for a vaginal birth and $50,000 for a c-section. (source [x]) Many impoverished people just simply do not have that kind of money, and are forced to take on pregnancy and childbirth without appropriate healthcare, or go into medical debt.Â
Additionally, pregnant people require more food, which they might not be able to afford. Pregnant people often experience side effects that would make it impossible or simply unsafe to work, especially in late stage pregnancy, and people living in poverty cannot afford to lose their jobs or even to miss shifts.Â
Native Americans have the highest rates of death due to pregnancy/childbirth complications, second only to Black people.Â
Black and AIAN women have pregnancy-related mortality rates that are over three and two times higher, respectively, compared to the rate for White women (40.8 and 29.7 vs. 12.7 per 100,000 live births)
(source [x])
With a pregnancy mortality rate more than double that of white people, if more Indigenous people are forced to endure a pregnancy, more Indigenous people will die at disproportionate rates.Â
Racial disparity in pregnancy mortality rates is due in part to inability to access healthcare, as well as systematic racism within healthcare resources themselves.
Native Americans have the highest incarceration rates in the U.S. out of any racial demographic in many states, and the second highest incarceration rates overall.Â
Native Americans are incarcerated at a rate 38% higher than the national average, according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics.
(source [x])
My final point that Iâm going to be discussing is about how American Indigenous people will be treated under abortion bans.Â
Native Americans face much higher incarceration rates out of almost any ethnic demographic, and very often face more severe punishments than non-native (particularly white) people who were charged with the same crime. If abortion is criminalized and can be punished with incarceration, Native Americans will be disproportionately impacted.Â
Additionally, people who miscarry can be legally punished under anti-abortion laws, because there is simply no way to prove that miscarriages werenât intentionally induced in many cases. We are living under a justice system that is biased against Indigenous people, and with the way things are right now, the only logical conclusion that one can draw based on evidence is that Native people who are falsely accused of abortion will be more likely to face criminal charges. Because itâs already happening.Â
Prosecutors argued methamphetamine use caused Poolawâs miscarriage between 15 and 17 weeks gestation. But a state medical examiner who testified for the prosecution during the one-day trial in October said there was a complication with the placenta and the fetus had a congenital abnormality. He couldnât say for certain whether drug use caused the pregnancy loss.
(source [x])
Brittney Poolaw, a 19 year old woman from the Comanche Nation, was sentenced to four years in prison after a miscarriage. The prosecution insisted that she was guilty of self-induced abortion by using meth, as she was an addict, even though medical evidence proved that there were other factors that could very well have caused miscarriage.Â
Abortion bans are aggressions against anyone who can become pregnant, but AI/AN communities will be impacted disproportionately. Our voices are incredibly important in matters like these, but are often talked over. Allow us to have a platform. Consider how your activism may exclude us. Thank you.Â
Iâve said it before, and I will say it again.
If you want Roe v Wade overturned, but donât support:
Comprehensive sexual education in schools
Easy and affordable access to contraception
Access to adequate and affordable prenatal care
Paid parental leave
Subsidized childcare
CHIP (Childrenâs Health Insurance Program)
WIC,
Then you donât actually care about reducing abortions or protecting children. You just want to punish people with uteruses for having sex.
ppl being like âabortion is okay only if you took all the âcorrectâ measures first or if you were impregnated non-consensuallyâ SHUT UP! abortion for âsexually promiscuousâ people and sex addicts and ppl you call sluts and whores and people who have one-night stands and every single person who had sex because they felt like it! you do not have to reach a quota of suffering to âdeserveâ an abortion. abortion is not something you earn. abortion isnât a moral thing like you protestants like to think itâs a fucking right and everyone deserves access to it and they donât have to prove that they deserve it. pregnancy is not a punishment for sex and every single person deserves the right to terminate a pregnancy regardless of how they became pregnant. shut up
VACCINATE YA KIDS FFS
The other thing about measles is that it resets your bodyâs memory of other diseases. So all those times youâve gotten sick? Your bodyâs memory cells no longer remember those illnesses, so even if you get the same type of illness again your body will react like itâs the first time youâve been sick.
Itâs so much worse than âjust a diseaseâ.Â
Measles does WHAT
Holy fuck
What the fuck what the fuck what the fUCK WHAT THE FUCK WHAT THE FUCK
antivaxxers also, in part, helped sabotaged the human lyme disease vaccine for lyme disease caused by borrelia burgdorferi infection (until 2016 the only known species of lyme disease causing bacteria in the USA). In 1998, the first lyme disease vaccine for the strain of the bacteria prevalent in the USA licensed. It passed clinical trials and was shown to be safe and effective; it was between 76 and 92% effective at preventing lyme disease with 3 injections. Antivaxxers proceeded to abuse the adverse affect reporting system, often complaining of arthritis, and this caused media and general hysteria about the vaccine. if you remember the flu vaccine hysteria around the swine flu epidemic, it was kind of like that. despite double-blind trials conducted both before and after licensing, that was unable to support their claims and instead displaying that the vaccine was safe and effective, the damage was done, and the vaccine was shelved in the USA. you can get a lyme disease vaccine in Europe, but Europe has a different strain of the bacteria that causes lyme disease.
Lyme disease can become very serious, it can infect the nervous system and cause neurological problems especially in young children who are often bitten on the head or the neck, undiagnosed it can cause chronic health issues that mimic other diseases. Without safe prophylactic measures beyond trying to minimize contact w ticks, this has driven people who have had lyme disease, have chronic effects from mass-disseminated lyme disease infection, or people who believe they have chronic lyme disease to go to quack doctors and undergo unsafe, unapproved medical treatment in an attempt to stop suffering.
This would not be happening on the scale that it is if antivaxxers didnât straight up execute a supervillain plot to sabotage the lyme disease vaccine. the vaccine was licensed in december 1998, which was the year andrew wakefield published his fraudulent research on the MMR vaccine
https://www.vox.com/science-and-health/2018/5/7/17314716/lyme-disease-vaccine-history-effectiveness

these people are fucking dangerous beyond compare
edited for clarity
antivaxer are terrorists and should be dealt like one
H.Bomberguyâs video on the anti-vaccine movement is absolutely worth watching in its entirety. Because it lays out just how fucking twisted and wrong the entire thing is, and how this entire movement that is KILLING CHILDREN is based on a lie for money.
wait wait wait wait WAIT!
YOU GUYS HAD A VACCINE AGAINST FUCKING LYME????
AND THOSE ASSHATS HELPED TO SHELF THAT STUFF?????????
Do you people even KNOW just how much trouble lyme disease makes every fucking year? Holy shit think of the possibilities!!!
So when I say I hate anti-vaxxers, yeah. This is why.
Yeah its not a viable belief system, it doesnât have any nugget of truth or good intentions in it, the lie and the packaged alternatives that come with it are quicker easier money than you could ever make climbing the ranks of âbig pharma,â these lies kill people, they become politicized and contaminate government legislation, and believers are not just quaint fringe eccentrics who only harm themselves. Theyâre abusing their kids, hampering medical progress, robbing other people of medical choice in situations like the Lyme vaccine, and actively making the world around them worse and deadlier. No mercy or tolerance for anti vaccine propaganda. Make it legally terrorism.
Gonna say it on every reblog of this post I see - This began because of ableism against autistic people. Jenny McCarthy insisted that her childâs autism was caused by vaccines, and enough people hated the thought of ever having an autistic child that they wouldnât use vaccines. They did not care that their child would die of the illnesses prevented by vaccines, they would rather have a dead child than an autistic one.
One of the most important things I learned in my Language and the Law class is that law enforcement will intentionally misinterpret every type of statement asking for a lawyer as not asking for a lawyer. Even directly saying it like this âI will not speak to you without a lawyerâ can be taken as a simple statement of fact rather than a request for a lawyer. You literally have to state âI am now invoking my right to a lawyerâ and every time they try to proceed with an interrogation you have to answer every question with âI am invoking my right to have a lawyer presentâ. You canât just tell them you wonât talk without a lawyer or that you want a lawyer. You have to state that you are invoking your rights. Otherwise they could just say âwell they just said they wouldnât speak without a lawyer present. Thatâs not invoking their rights to a lawyer. Itâs just stating a fact.â even just stating your right to a lawyer doesnât count!
PLEASE share this addition. I am a lawyer who works in criminal defense, and this is one of the most avoidable things that people consistently get wrong about the Miranda rights.
Here are some more âambiguousâ phrases which courts have found DO NOT invoke your right to a lawyer:
âMaybe I should speak to my lawyer first.â
âI might like a lawyer.â
âI think I should have a lawyer present for this.â
âCould I speak to my lawyer first?â
âHow long until my lawyer gets here?â
And perhaps most egregiously â âGet me a lawyer, dawg â âcause this is not whatâs up.â
Here are the magic phrases which you need to know if you want to invoke your Miranda rights:
1) âAm I free to leave?â
Itâs worth asking this even if the answer is obvious. Even if the officer does not let you leave, by forcing them to admit that you are not free to leave, you are creating a record which your attorney can use to prove that you were in custody. Miranda rights only apply if the interrogation is custodial, meaning that police officers will frequently claim that their suspects were ânot in custodyâ to get around their Miranda rights.
2)Â âI am invoking my right to remain silent.â
Simply staying silent will not invoke your right to remain silent. As absurd as this is, you must explicitly say that you are invoking your right to remain silent in order to invoke that right.
3)Â âI am invoking my right to an attorney.â
As stated above, you must be not only clear and unambiguous, but clear and legally unambiguous. Donât get cute. Donât get sassy. And on the flip side, donât get intimidated and use verbal ticks to minimize your request. Say the line with those words exactly â say it clearly, and say it once, and then say nothing else.
Because even after youâve done all this, the police can still try to get you to talk. Theyâre not supposed to interrogate you, but theyâre allowed to make casual conversation, and if that conversation just happens to circle back around to the thing they wanted to question you about, well, thatâs really your fault for talking after you said you wouldnât, isnât it? Canât possibly fault the poor officers when you initiated â if you really wanted to have your rights respected, you wouldnât have talked to them in the first place.
The police know this, and they will mercilessly exploit this loophole. So, once youâve successfully invoked your Miranda rights, any and all conversation you have with police officers will put those rights back into jeopardy.Â
Putting it all together:
Ask: âAm I free to leave?â
If they say no, say:Â âI am invoking my right to remain silent and I am invoking my right to an attorney.â
And then shut up and do not say a single thing to them for any reason whatsoever until you have actually spoken to an attorney. Yes, even if it takes hours. Yes, even if they start talking to you about something else.
Finally, a very important disclaimer:
I may be a lawyer, but Iâm not your lawyer, and I cannot guarantee that what Iâve just laid out here will always work for every situation. We didnât get to this bizarre and absurd place overnight â we built this ridiculous system piecemeal, by deciding on a case-by-case basis that certain phrases were âtoo ambiguousâ or certain types of questioning werenât actually questioning at all. The law is still in flux, and is still fundamentally out to get you, and willing to bend plain meaning beyond all recognition to do it. Even if you invoke your rights perfectly, exactly as I have specified above, thereâs a chance that your invocation of rights will be disqualified on some new technicality that no oneâs even thought of yet â and thatâs precisely the problem.
Watch this video: âDonât Talk To The Policeâ
I am begging my followers to please watch this video from start to finish. I know itâs long, but it is incredibly valuable information that everyone needs to know, especially if youâre involved in any form of activism.
Every single cop lies. Every single cop lies and manipulates and twists the situation around to get a confession. Even when they know that the person is innocent, even when they know that what they have isnât enough to convict someone, even when they know that that confession has been made under duress or manipulation. All they care about is getting anything to put someone behind bars.
It doesnât matter how eloquent or innocent or experienced you are. Do not talk to cops.
The video is a doozy. Aside from all the good advice, the racist dog whistling from the officer really jumps out. In fact, his whole segment was pretty effective to drive home the point that officers are literally trained to manipulate you and fuck you over. He does say he doesnât âtryâ to put innocent people in prison, but he never says he tries to keep them out either. He also explicitly states that he destroys material that could be helpful to you.
In short, DO NOT TALK TO COPS.
How to spot signs and symptoms of Breast CancerÂ
Reblog to literally save a life
whish they told us this in school, all they did was say âfeel for lumps, you will know when you feel itâ
This is important, even if it doesnât work with your blog theme REBLOG IT!!!!
Women need to know this, not all of us have ever been told what we need to look out for!
yeah reblogging especially for my transmasc fellows who (like me) might be real uncomfortable with their chests and not know what to watch out for because we try to avoid this kind of thing (just me? okay)
I read all the health pamphlets as a child.
âLook for lumps,â they said, âwatch out for unusual lumps and discharge.â
They did NOT say, âBy the way, some areolas have little bumps on them. And some get pimple-ish things around the edges. Or on the nipples. These are not the lumps we are talking about, and that is not the discharge we are talking about.â
I spent years worrying about whether I had breast cancer. (I got exams, every year or two, and those were always fine and I stopped worrying. Mostly. But then a new tiny bump would show up on the edges and I would wonder IS THIS IT? âŠbut not ask to see a doctor because 14-year-old girls worry about everything, all the time, and six months ago the doctor poked at my breasts and didnât say anything alarming, so this is⊠probably fine? Like last time?)
I had a slightly more present and caring doctor tell me what I need to be looking for specifically are lumps that feel like peas or grains of rice.
That distinction cleared so much up for me, like, breast tissue is all lumps and bumps normally (which is what mamories feel like to me). What the hell do they mean by lumps????
Now I know.
The Ocean Cleanup, the group behind the device, thinks 10 such installations could clean 50% of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch in five years.
Scientists and engineers began to question whether the group could deliver on the tens of millions of dollars it had acquired in funding.
But over the summer, the organization pinned its hopes on a new device, which it nicknamed Jenny. The installation is essentially an artificial floating coastline that catches plastic in its fold like a giant arm, then funnels the garbage into a woven funnel-shaped net. Two vessels tow it through the water at about 1.5 knots (slower than normal walking speed), and the ocean current pushes floating garbage toward the giant net.
In early August, the team launched Jenny in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, a trash-filled vortex between Hawaii and California. The garbage patch is the largest accumulation of ocean plastic in the world, encompassing more than 1.8 trillion pieces, according to the Ocean Cleanupâs estimates.
Last week, Jenny faced its final test as the organization sought to determine whether it could bring large amounts of plastic to shore without breaking or malfunctioning. The Ocean Cleanup said the device hauled 9,000 kilograms, or nearly 20,000 pounds, of trash out of the Pacific Ocean â proof that the garbage patch could eventually be cleaned up.
âHoly mother of god,â Slat tweeted that afternoon, adding, âIt all worked!!!â
Once itâs brought to shore, the plastic gets recycled. For now, the Ocean Cleanup is using the plastic to make $200 pairs of sunglasses, funneling the proceeds back into the cleanup efforts. Eventually, the organization hopes to partner with consumer brands to make more recycled products.
Slat estimated that the team would need about 10 Jennys to clean up 50% of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch in five years. A single device can hold 10,000 to 15,000 kilograms of plastic, he tweeted.
