Might be an unpopular opinion, idk
But this needs to be said.
I think the real main problem with astrology is that people treat it like a science instead of a spiritual practice, both on the side of people who hate it and want it erased from existence and on the side of people who are super into it.
On the side of people hating it: I get it. I get that there are people who use astrology as an excuse to be toxic. I get that there are people who are coming up with their own new form of bigotry based on frickin' star signs. I agree that those people need to chill out and go to therapy.
But using the argument "there is no scientific evidence backing astrology" as a reason that it shouldn't exist is not helpful. It's a spiritual practice for a lot of people, like praying or celebrating sacred holidays or what have you. You don't generally use "no scientific evidence" as an argument against those practices.
And also... you need to consider that not all people who use astrology are using it in the way that you hate. I don't think that it's 100% accurate, I don't think that it's going to reveal some cosmic destiny, I don't use it to determine who I should date or befriend, and I don't adapt my personality to better fit what my birth chart says. I'll get into what I do use it for in a bit. (And thank you for reading this far if you do hate astrology; I deeply appreciate you hearing me out.)
On the side of people using it like a science: I get that astrology is fun, and it's easy to get too caught up in something you find fascinating. I get that it would be wild if we had something that could accurately predict the future and/or explain the complexity of the human personality in a learnable system.
But astrology is not a science, as I've said. It's not always accurate, and a science is something that is tested and proven to be accurate. Spirituality is a bit more loose - not always accurate, not currently understandable with our current technology.
Also, I recommend researching cognitive biases. If you're arguing that astrology is an accurate science because [insert examples of the times it was accurate in your life], you may be falling into confirmation bias (and possibly hindsight bias).
I see too many people who are interested in Dionysus worry that he will reject them if they aren't some flavour of alcoholic, so I say this as gently as possible: please research him
Dionysus is so much more than some drunkard wine god who requires inebriation to worship him. He's a god of the oppressed, of insanity, of liberation, of death and rebirth, of fertility, and yes, of wine
He is violence and love, the calm before a storm and the rage within one, the breath before you scream and the roar of victory, communion and ecstasy, dance and utter stillness, anger and joy
And he will love you no matter what
What I was actually coming here to blog about…
I was reading my witch book on break at work, and it told me to keep black obsidian with me to absorb negativity.
And I laughed because I literally have a small potato in my pocket right now for exactly that.
idk why I think of potatoes as 'absorbent', but I do. And at work, every day there is at least one small potato that breaches containment from its cardboard box home and lands on the floor. Instead of throwing it out immediately, one day I just tucked it into my pocket and then threw it out at the end of the day. 10/10, do recommend.
ok but potatoes are ABSOLUTELY magically absorbent and that is an excellent use for a spare potato.
In cooking if your soup is too salty you can put potato in it, simmer it, and discard the salty potato. So, that makes since.
Potat: It ABSORBS!
Tbh I trust the potato more than obsidian. What has obsidian ever done for me personally?? Now a potato on the other hand . . . that's an honest creature. I trust it.
THIS IS A MAGICALLY SOUND PRINCIPAL
Sympathy, the second law of magic. Like attracts like. What absorbs the flavor of the mundane world must absorb the flavor of the metaphysical world.
I’m focusing on shadow work for the Full Moon in Capricorn. Just thought I’d share, like usual ☺️
Don’t miss out on the power of the Scorpio Full Moon 🌕
less positive post, but as a cult survivor, I need some of y'all in pagan spaces to start being a lot more careful with the things you believe and do.
you need to check to see if what people say is actually backed up by sources. you need to do your own research. you need to learn to recognize 'new age' ideas and practices and avoid them. you need to be aware of when you're being drawn into a very insular or high control group.
you are not exempt from cults. you're not exempt from being drawn into cult like beliefs and practices. I've spent a lot of time learning to recognize cults and deconstruct and even if you've never been in one, you need to learn too.
lots of love <3
YOU hates terfs
rb if u hates terfs
"Aphrodite loves terfs" do you really think a goddess of love formed from a literal penis and the mother of Hermaphroditus, an intersex god who was associated with androgyny and feminine men, fucks around with transphobia?
she is a literal trans icon and to deny that will get you smited by all the gods
Teaching children thinking bad thoughts about someone is the same thing as murdering that person is fucked up.
Thought crime doesn’t exist. No one has ever been harmed or killed by someone thinking negative thoughts about them.
You know what has harmed people though? Teaching them they are evil for things they can’t control. Especially those who have intrusive thoughts.
Here’s for everyone who has been taught their thoughts make them evil.
Intrusive thoughts are not your secret desires.
They are involuntary.
You don’t need to be ashamed of them.
They will pass.
You are not committing taboo.
No one can read your mind.
No one will ever know what’s in your thoughts unless you feel like telling them.
No one can judge you for what you are thinking, whether voluntarily or involuntarily.
Your thoughts are private
You are not a bad person.
I've been meaning to bring this up on this blog, because I also see some of this in the pagan community. I've read several books on witchcraft that say things like "you are putting a curse on this person by thinking these negative thoughts about them."
(Preemptively going to say that no, the authors of the books were not Wiccan. I hear Wiccans sometimes say things like this, but I don't personally read Wiccan books. And it needs to be made abundantly clear that this mindset is not just in Wiccan circles.)
That mindset is really harmful to spread. Especially for individuals in pagan and witchcraft communities who are mentally ill / have major anxiety.
Most people will have intrusive thoughts at some point. If you have never had them, you are in the minority. And no, it is not something that you have to discipline yourself out of, or even can discipline yourself out of.
For a curse, there needs to be genuine intent. You are not cursing people with your passing thoughts.
Spiritual eugenicist dingbats be like "medications and therapy are all bad for you, so you must do shadow work instead", and bruh, who's going to tell them a psychologist came up with the whole concept of shadow work as a form of psychotherapy.
