Today was Hoof Day for Pirlouit, and usually I go halter him comfortably early before our farrier appointment so I can do it without any hint of urgency or else it ruins everything. I was running late one time and the farrier was due to arrive any minute, and even though I felt calm I must have been giving off this simmering skittish energy you have when you’re late, and it stressed Pirou from 10 metres away and he hid behind trees and wouldn’t let me catch him.

So I made a mental note that my hypersensitive donkey ideally needs to be caught by someone who just received a 2 hour aromatherapy massage and has forgotten their nervous system as a concept—but that happened last year, and many things have happened to Pirlouit since then. He got a job and grew more confident, he’s transported logs precariously balanced on his back and developed nerves of steel. This morning the farrier arrived 20 min early because another client cancelled, and nothing was ready, I was still home when at one point I looked out the window and saw him enter the pasture and I was like shit, there’s no way I’m going to catch Pirou now that he suspects that some dark plot is in motion, plus I’m going to be stressed on a subliminal level only perceivable by donkeys because someone is watching us and I need to get a good grade in catching my donkey.

I went to the pasture and Pirlouit was eyeing the farrier with some suspicion—but then he trotted towards me nonchalantly and he all but took his halter and put it on and fastened it himself. He seemed proud to show this visitor that he is now a model donkey. I was like do you even want your apricot or have we reached a height of perfection that makes virtue its own reward…? but he did want his apricot.
