random PSA, I know a lot of people use duckduckgo as a Google alternative search engine, but it always kind of annoyed me when I was using it because it felt like No Name Brand Google
I have switched to using Startpage.com and vastly prefer it. for one thing, instead of displaying an "AI summary" at the top of the search results (unless you turn it off, yes I know), it displays the first paragraph of the Wikipedia article, with link, whenever it finds one that's relevant.
also a waaayyyyy better sense of design than duckduckgo
also private, European based, least annoying search I've used lately (RIP old "don't be evil" Google)
Keeping a list of Google alternatives just in case…
i have one of those, scraped from multiple different rec posts:
Search Engines
Infinity Search is an alternative search engine with a special focus on privacy
DuckDuckGo is a popular search engine for those who value their privacy and are put off by the thought of their every query being tracked and logged. Uses bangs, ![site] for in-page search (sells your data to microsoft and draws from fucking bing)
WolframAlpha is a privately owned search engine that allows you to “compute expert-level answers using Wolfram’s breakthrough algorithms, knowledgebase, and AI technology.” A data search engine.
Boardreader is a search engine for forums and message boards. It allows you to search forums and then filter down results by date and language.
Based in France, Qwant is a privacy-based search engine that won’t record your searches or use your personal details for advertising. Uses “&” as a bang search.
Another privacy-based search engine is Search Encrypt, which uses local encryption to ensure that users’ identifiable information cannot be tracked. Metasearch across multiple engines.
Offering unbiased results from several sources, SearX is a metasearch engine that aims to present a free, decentralized view of the internet. Can be self-hosted.
Gibiru’s tagline is “Unfiltered private search” and that’s exactly what it offers. Requires AnonymoX Firefox add-on for privacy.
Disconnect allows you to conduct anonymous searches through a search engine of your choice.
Swisscows provides fully encrypted searches to protect your privacy and security. Built-in violence/porn filter cannot be overridden.
MetaGer offers “Privacy Protected Search & Find” through its anonymised search. A plugin will allow it to be made a default.
Gigablast is a private search engine that indexes millions of websites and servers real-time information without tracking your data, keeping you hidden from marketers and spammers. Variety of filtration and refinement options for searching.
Oscobo is a search engine that protects your privacy while you search the web. By not using any third-party tools or scripts, your data is protected from hacking and misuse. Has a Chrome extension to allow use in toolbar.
https://search.marginalia.nu/ an independent DIY search engine that focuses on non-commercial content, and attempts to show you sites you perhaps weren't aware of in favor of the sort of sites you probably already knew existed. Use old-school searching rather than query-based for the best results.
https://www.mojeek.com/
https://wiby.me/ - It’s goal is to index as many personalized websites as possible, and NOT commercial sites.
https://4get.ca/ it works a lot like SearX, but honestly better. It doesn’t have its own index, but pulls from many others. I think it’s the best for research, since it allows you to search for answers from different indexes, is easy to configure, add free, and avoids censorship as much as it can.
https://www.searchenginemap.com/ for more on how search engines relate to each other.
https://yep.com/ is a crawler
https://www.etools.ch/ retrieves from Google, Mojeek, Bing, and Yandex, like Searx

https://searxng.org/ (next gen Searx)
https://luxxle.com/ - possibly conservative?
https://presearch.com/ - good for academic?
https://kagi.com/smallweb - free/randomised Kagi.
Other Searchers
www.refseek.com - Academic Resource Search. More than a billion sources: encyclopedia, monographies, magazines.
www.worldcat.org - a search for the contents of 20 thousand worldwide libraries. Find out where lies the nearest rare book you need.
https://link.springer.com - access to more than 10 million scientific documents: books, articles, research protocols.
www.bioline.org.br is a library of scientific bioscience journals published in developing countries.
http://repec.org - volunteers from 102 countries have collected almost 4 million publications on economics and related science.
www.science.gov is an American state search engine on 2200+ scientific sites. More than 200 million articles are indexed.
www.base-search.net is one of the most powerful researches on academic studies texts. More than 100 million scientific documents, 70% of them are free.https://cosine.club/ is an electronic music similarity search engine
hi! i’m curious to know what your thoughts on martin’s recent film/project choices? (still not entirely sure about seven dials) love his work but makes me sad that they’re not that widely accessible? meaning would really love it if we can actually watch them (momo and flavia for the most recent ones) just miss seeing him onscreen
oh my god yes!! while i think it is cool he's working on some smaller and more indie projects, it really was so much easier and less of a headache to watch his big movies and tv shows wherever you live. i think the most heartbreaking ones are the very small movies and short films where you can literally only watch them at some film festival and don't exist anywhere online. howeverr i will say i have one talent in life and that is finding links to watch these movies for free, so if you want me find any of those movies for you pls let me know! (as long as you're okay with a little piracy 🧍♂️)
Just to comment on this further, films and tv series have become tricker to watch than past years. There was a time where things were getting universal release, esp through netflix. But now there are so many competing streaming services it's confusing to work out what is where with indy releases. Geolocking has become more strict, so with indy films/shows from europe/uk and us, if they don't get distribution deals to other regions they simply aren't seen, either in person at festivals or through streaming services.
That leaves us outside those key regions more dependent on alternative means (arrr high seas) of access. Being in south east asia/oceania region, I've started using those alternative means more as I can't afford subscriptions to multiple streaming services.
I did take the liberty of tracking down those two films mentioned, and have them available here to watch:
Flavia - https://www.dailymotion.com/video/k6hSRKQVcrYzi4FLyNa
Momo - https://www.dailymotion.com/video/k1Hkt3Jd64Kk8wFLG54
Hope that helps!
Normally, I wouldn't share photos of myself, but I was sewing a bit, so here you go. Old duvet cover transformed into a frilly shirt, haha.
For those who are interested - for the shirt I was pretty much following the instructions here and here. It's very nicely described and because it's basically only made out of rectangles the pattern is very simple to make and in general it's not difficult to sew at all. I had to make it quite a bit smaller though and the sleeves are still rather too long for me, which may look stylish on photos but it's a bit too much. :'^)
The first link also has instructions for the neckcloth and other 18th century items ✨
The lettering part is finished, so I wanted to put them all together in a separate post

Examining 'gender detachment' in the asexual community
Saving @derinthescarletpescatarian 's tags because I just like the way they are worded.
This is so cool
This is so validating because the respondents in this paper are saying some of the same things I've been feeling and thinking for years.
I'm asexual. I figured that out not long after I first came across the term in high school. But figuring out my gender took a lot longer. I didn't really think about my gender identity for years, it wasn't until I was in college that I started trying to figure out what my gender was. That process took years.
I didn't really feel attached to my assigned gender, but I also didn't feel the gender dysphoria that trans people described. I didn't particularly feel like I was neither of those either. For a long time, I honestly didn't feel like any of the gender descriptions and identities I was coming across really fit. I just didn't care that much about what my actual gender was. Eventually I decided upon the agender label as that seemed the most apt. As the paper says, it's really hard to be truly without gender in this highly gendered world. Agender is a way of defining myself in a way that people who experience gender might be able to understand when "I'm just me." isn't really an acceptable answer to the "what's your gender?" question.
I don't mind being perceived as a gender, none of them are offensive to me. While I do like when I am perceived as male or at least not female, I think that more has to do with growing up female and not wanting to be pushed into traditional female roles and values than a connection or repulsion to any gender. I'm impossible to misgender because I frankly don't care.
Honestly, the biggest problem I have with my gender, is trying to define it to people. There's been a large push in recent years for asking people for their pronouns, or including pronouns in things like email signatures and surveys. And don't get me wrong, I'm not saying this is a bad thing! This is very affirming for a lot of people. But it feels like I need to pick something that doesn't quite fit. At pride, for instance, there's always pronoun buttons. But they're all she/her, he/him, they/them, she/they, he/they, it/it, xe/xir, etc etc. And that's great. I'm always glad that there are a lot of options for people. But there's never any pins for any/all pronouns. I've never picked up a free pronoun pin at pride, despite always looking, because they all feel like picking what pronouns I don't want poeple to use and the answer is that I don't care. I fround an any/all pronoun pin once at a queer museum and I cried.
I really suggest you read the paper if you haven't. Not just the article, the whole paper. This is probably the most seen I've felt in a long time.
@abalidoth
Gender is a mug's game, and I don't wanna play.
[Image ID: Image #2: Tumblr tags reading: #this shouldn't be surprisig as an enormous amount of gender coding and reinforcement is based around courtship #which is the whole reason 'gay' and 'lesbian' as insults have been used to imply not being a real proper man or woman #if a keystone of coercive gender enforcement wasn't based around courtship then being a girlish man and being gay would not be culturally #seen as being heavily related #it's harder to think of gender as all that important or fundamental to you when most of the messages about Why it should be important to yo #are just telling you it's for something else you don't want or want differently to the way they're trying to force on you #it's like saying 'oh it's important to grow your hair long and develop strong arms so you can get electric shocks every weekend' #well I don't want electric shocks every weekend so why is all this hair maintenance and painful weightlifting important again #no you Have to want electric shocks every weekend that's what makes us Human /End ID]
And again, this great day is April 26th. The day the story that captured my heart and soul began. That's why I took some photos based on the story in the mountains. But no drama, please, because today is a holiday!

The Bagginshield Red Thread compilation
So, if you follow me over on TikTok, you might have seen I started this presentation over a month ago. It is basically a resource for all bagginshield shippers to have info about these two in one single place: with links, photos, and hopefully an aesthetic display for those who enjoy that. This presentation is not finished! So I will update the links (weekly I hope) so that you can see more info there. I have several links for it depending on where you'd like to see it. As a view only link and hopefully a pdf file. (I'll have to grant access!) If the link for the pdf doesn't work, I am trying to find a place where such a big file can be shared that is not Adobe or Dropbox (this is over 80 slides long) so if you have any recs, I'd appreciate it!
You might find typos, I tried to check it as much as I could, but if I keep doing so, I might never actually release this! So, sorry if there are any eyesores, but they will be fixed with time. With a happy heart, hope you enjoy!
this is such GORGEOUS work!! thank you for making this!
I finished sewing another blanket last night and it was already donated this morning. This is my first hand stitch experience. The blanket was too thick to make several stitches at a time, but it was really very exciting and I can't remember any other job that gave me so much pleasure. This is the third blanket I sewed. It's the thickest and the most crooked. For the first time, I decided to follow the advice of the masters and regretted it at a time when it was impossible to fix something. The whole process from the sketch to the last stitch took 10 days. I really want to do the next blanket. There seems to be something narcotic in the flaps. It's impossible to stop
I sewed a comfort blanket for myself and it contains everything that I love. The Hobbit, tomatoes, a button from my children's dress, plaid fabrics, fabrics brought from trips, scraps from my friends' clothes (some are no longer with me), books... I've had a lot of fun with my work and will probably make something else this month. Most likely, my favorite pirates are next.
RIP Joann, now what?
I wanted to make a post I could copy and paste and or link when I see folks asking where to buy fabrics when Joann is gone. I sew a lot, generally between 100-200 items a year and I don't do it on a big budget. Stores are not in a particular order.
Notions:
Wawak.com - start here, mostly stay here. Wawak is a supplier for professional sewing businesses and have the prices that show it. I will not pay for gutermann Mara 100 anywhere else. I buy buttons, tools, thread, and most elastic here.
Stitch Love Studio - this is where I buy lingerie supplies https://www.etsy.com/shop/StitchLoveStudio?ref=yr_purchases
Fabric:
Fabric Mart - this is one where you want to sign up for emails and never buy unless its on sale. They run different sales every day and they rotate. Mostly deadstock fabrics but I buy more from here than anywhere else. Fantastic customer service and if you watch you can get things like $6 wool suiting or $4 cotton jersey. https://fabricmartfabrics.com/
Fabrics-Store - again, buy the sales not the full price. Sign up for the emails but redirect them to a folder because it is TOO MANY. They stock linen or good but not amazing quality. https://www.fabrics-store.com/
Purple Seamstress - This is where I buy my solid cotton lycra jersey. They have other things, but the jersey is what I'm here for. Inexpensive and very good quality. If you ask she will mail you a swatch card for the solids. https://purpleseamstressfabric.com/
LA Finch - deadstock fabrics with a fantastic remnant selection https://lafinchfabrics.myshopify.com/
Califabrics - mix of deadstock and big brands, easy to navigate and always seem to have good denim in stock. https://califabrics.com/
Boho Fabrics - good variety, nice bundles. I have also gotten some really great trims from here. https://www.bohofabrics.com/
Firecracker Fabrics - garment and quilting fabrics, really nice selection and great sale section. I've bought $5 yard quilting cottons here several times. https://www.firecrackerfabrics.com/
Hancock's of Paducah - Quilting fabric and some limited garment fabric. AMAZING sale section. Do not sleep on the sale section. This is my first stop when buying quilting fabrics. Usually the last stop too. Not particularly speedy shipping. https://www.hancocks-paducah.com/
Itokri - This is something a little different. Itokri is an Indian business with incredible traditional fabrics. Shipping to the US is expensive, but the fabric is so inexpensive it evens out. I generally end up paying like $30 for shipping. Beautiful ikat and block prints. https://itokri.com/
Miss Matatabi - this is a little treat. This isn't where you go to save money, but there are so many beautiful things in this shop. Ships from Japan incredibly quickly. https://shop.missmatatabi.com/
Lucky Deluxe - Craft thrift store, always has an incredible selection and fantastic customer service. I need to close the tab fast because I never go to this website without finding something I need. https://www.luckydeluxefabrics.com/
Swanson's - the OG of online craft thrift stores, but I find their website harder to navigate. https://www.swansonsfabrics.com
Honorary Mentions: I haven't shopped at these places yet but I have had them recommended and likely will at some point.
A Thrifty Notion - https://athriftynotion.com/
Creative Closeouts - https://creativecloseoutsfabric.com/ being rebranded to sewsnip.com on March 1 - quilting deadstock
Hawthorne Supply Co. - I just got this rec and I think I need to not look too closely or I'm going to slip with my debit card. https://www.hawthornesupplyco.com/
This is not an exhaustive list of everywhere you can buy fabric, or even a full list of where I shop. There are SO many options out there in the world. You also need to think outside the fabric store box. I thrift men's shirt fabrics for quilts and sheets for backing fabric. I don't do a ton of in person thrifting and my local stores don't get a lot of craft materials but every thrift store is its own universe and reflects the community it is in. Go out and find something cool.
Oh and final note: Don't shop at Hobby Lobby.
Oh I just had this conversation with my friends group yesterday. Btw while you can, buy brother machines at the going-out-of-business sale! I just got a serger for $270 which is insane! There's EMBROIDERY MACHINES!!! Anyway, here's some more places--my stash of websites is very orientated toward natural fabrics, and historical ones in particular--I'm a rennie.
https://dharmatrading.com - silks
https://renaissancefabrics.com - linen, cotton, wool, silk, notions.
https://periodfabric.com - more historical fabrics
https://bigduckcanvas.com - duck and canvas like it says. tent fabric.
https://fabrics-store.com - linen and cotton. They sell kits for kitchen towels too.
https://woolsome.shop - wool
https://www.papercityfabrics.com/ - everything is $4/yd
https://metrotextilesnyc.com - has a lot of quilting fabric
https://fabricdepot.com - general fabric store
https://onlinefabricstore.com - general fabric store
https://burnleyandtrowbridge.com - SYNTHETIC PLASTIC WHALEBONE FROM GERMANY. BEHAVES LIKE WHALEBONE!!! they also carry clothing, fabric etc but the whalebone is the exciting thing bc I do not know many places in the states to get this stuff.
https://farthingalecorsetmakingsupplies.com - Corset supplies, another place to get synthetic whalebone.
https://firemountaingems.com - bead store!
https://beadtin.com - bead store, emphasis on pony beads.
https://jetpens.com - pens, inks, anything you want for calligraphy etc.
https://tiedtohistory.com - goldwork supplies and other notions, patterns, some fabric too. Mostly sparklyshinies. This is my source for actual real genuine Thread-of-Gold and Thread-of-silver!
https://angelusdirect.com - Angelus paint, which is a paint used by cosplayers the world over to paint leather and fabric and shoes. It dries flexible and comes in a zillion colours.
https://shop.smooth-on.com - Silicone and moulding supplies.
https://dickblick.com - ART supplies, but I'm putting this here bc Joann's did sell art supplies.
https://sculpey.com - Sculpey clay, buy it directly from the company.
https://hollanders.com - Bookbinding supplies!
https://leatherhidestore.com - Leather, mostly the sizes for garments or upholstering.
https://tandyleather.com - Another leather crafting store, focus more on crafting. They sell tools and machines as well as leather and notions for leather.
https://patterns.bootstrapfashion.com - DIY dress forms! Plus sizes and men included!
https://herrschners.com - string things! Embroidery, latchook, macrame, etc! I hesitate to say a general craft store, but it does have a LOT of stuff. The prices for their DMC embroidery floss are particularly attractive though.
https://trimsbytheyard.com - TRIMS! They got fringe, they got tassels, they got ruffles and beads you want it they got it!
https://sonomawoolcompany.com - wool but more specifically, wool batting for quilts!
https://furlscrochet.com - ERGONOMIC crochet hooks!
If you have supplies and like them, see if the brand has a website you can buy from direct.
If you need a sewing or serging machine, Bernina is the best, followed by Viking. Brother is best for embroidery machines. Get an older Bernina if you can.
If you live near a fashion city (LA, NYC, Paris, London) then GO TO THE GARMENT DISTRICT. LA has a place you can buy fabric BY THE POUND. It's not got a website it's just a little hole in the wall on like the second floor of a building and a tiny old man is at the counter and has probably been there like a hundred years. NYC has fabric stores that are over a century old. Even my tiny little village has a quilting shop.
Also, join your local historical re-enactors or SCA chapter, that is chock full of crafters looking for new blood. The SCA is a great way to learn crafts you've never heard of, too, like Nalbinding. If you're not careful you'll wake up with an inkle loom and a spindle in your house and like five bags of roving from someone's pet alpaca.
Joann's itself was a corporate takeover of a bunch of smaller local fabric stores, and was sterile and devoid of the REAL kind of community that crafting has. Go look for NON-chain stores, go local! That is where you will find resources--crafters know crafters, because everyone tends to have at least 2+ crafts they do.
Wholesalers of fine wool fabric, natural silk fabric and sewing supplies located in the heart of the Los Angeles Garment District.
Tailor supply store. Great for fabric but also for hair canvas (interfacing for tailored suits) and other notions
Your source for fresh, unique, trendy swimsuit & athletic knit fabrics and personal service. Knit fabric, children's fabric, swimsuit fabric
Swim suit fabrics. I used them to make my 1920s swim suit with board short fabric.
If you’re looking for specialty threads (wawak is great for poly and cotton but they only have buttonhole twist in silk) I’ve had success ordering from superior threads and 123stitch.com. (Superior is the more modern and trustworthy-looking website but they keep discontinuing the silk thread I want. 123stitch looks janky but is cheaper and they shipped fast, so…)
