No one talks about how lonely you can be when you finish college. How hard it is to watch your friends enjoy the org you put your heart and soul into for them. How hard it is to lie and say that post grad life is great when Iâm so lonely and defeated. Not to mention poor, dear god so incredibly poor. School was an escape for so long, and itâs just gone. Like what?
college advice from someone whoâs been on both sides of it
So Iâm finishing up my Ph.D. and preparing to depart for the real world (no, just kidding, Iâm going to be in school forever, only in a different capacity)Â and I thought Iâd put together a list of some college tips to share with you all. I graduated with my B.A. in 2012, magna cum laude, with 2 majors, 1 honours thesis, 2 on-campus jobs, and 3 music things. Since then, Iâve gone to grad school and also taught six semesters of first-year seminars. Now Iâm going on the job market for teaching positions. All of this means that Iâve seen both sides of the college experience, as a student and as an instructor. There are a lot of great & useful college advice posts going around studyblr this time of here, and I wanted to add my own. I hope itâs useful. So here we go, with a âread moreâ because itâs long (sorry if youâre on mobile):
academics
find your classrooms ahead of time (profsâ offices too)
figure out how long it will take you to walk between places
figure out where your best seat will be & claim it
say hi to the people next to you, learn their names
take notes in class
take advantage of extra credit
try your best not to fall asleep in class (and if you do fall asleep, apologise to the prof afterwards)
bring your glasses if you need them, donât be stubborn about it
check out the library, wander in the stacks, talk to the librarians
figure out how & where to print
buy used books/textbooks, or rent them, but be careful with ebooks (some profs donât allow them)
plan breaks into your class schedule, or block everything together, whichever works best for you
work out the pros & cons of 8am classes and/or night classes
plan ahead â have a planner, put things in it, do them
fake deadlines are a thing (write down earlier deadlines, trick yourself into meeting them, bask in satisfaction)
grades wonât be what they were in high school
keep in mind GPA values: a 3.5 will see you graduating with honours
be nice to the departmental administrative staff, thank them for helping you (even with small things)
office hours versus emailing profs: both will get your questions answered (probably) but if you can go and talk in person, do it
profs & TAs are people too, they have lives, they have bad days
if something comes up, talk to your prof, be honest but donât overshare, just show them youâre trying

These are just my thoughts in a depressive state.
I wonder if you want me to be someone I will never be. If you want me to lose weight and be so light with my makeup that you can't tell I'm wearing any at all. You tell me you don't want me to change but you are embarrassed and uncomfortable with some things I do. I don't understand it. Your friend ditches your plans and I drop everything to save it and you ditch me? Decide to just not go and tell me 4 hours later? Because you are lazy and have a friend over? I'm going to need you to cut the shit and make me a goddamn priority like I am supposed to be. Both of your friends show off their girls, often. I'm out here underappreciated and you think it should be fixed by something sexual, OR it's 'Sorry'. 'Sorry' is sad. It is lazy. It is disrespectful. THEN when we go on our double date, you make me pay, treat me like shit, and pretty much make fun of me in front of the other really cute couple. How fucked up are you in the head to think that, that is okay? I am hurt. I am disgusted. And frankly at this point I really want to hurt you too. This isn't high school anymore, this is real life. And i deserve someone that finds me as perfect as I find you. And you don't, I know it. I just feel it. When he was filming âWitnessâ he rented a small farm from a friend of mine. At the end of the filming my friend went and checked out the property as usual. He noticed the barn door had been leveled so it no longer would swing open on itâs own. Went into the house and saw the closets had been redone, in the kitchen the cabinets had been replaced and all the drawers now opened really well. Turns out that there were thousands of dollars of work and materials put into fixing up everything at the place.
My friend called Ford and asked him how much he was asking for the work. Ford told him doing that kind of thing helped him relax and stay sane when he was filming. Would not take a dime. Plus he paid for a new water heater and got the sewage system cleaned out.
And he paid rent to live there the entire time.

Iâm coming back through the store, and I just happen to pass this person holding up a pair of ski pants, and itâs Harrison Ford. I look at him, he looks at me and puts his head right down. Iâm co-production designer on the new Star Wars, Iâm just back from London, and Iâve been building the Falcon.â A big smile came across his face, he put his hand out, and we had such a great conversation â he couldnât have been sweeter.Â
As Iâm walking away, he goes, âDarren!â and calls me back. He goes, âThe toggle switches.â I go, âToggle switches.â He goes, âThe toggle switches on the Falcon. When they built it the first time, they bought cheap toggle switches without any springs in them. Every time I threw a toggle switch, it fell back; it wouldnât hold. It drove me crazy. Please, make sure the toggle switches are fixed this time.â I go, âNo problem! Iâll take care of it!âÂ
So months go by, Iâm back in London, weâre getting close [to principal photography], and I get a phone call saying J.J.âs headed down to check out the cockpit, and Harrisonâs with him. I run down there and I see J.J. in the passenger seat and Harrison in the pilot seat. Theyâre just giddy; theyâre having so much fun. And then I see Harrison look up, and he just starts throwing all the toggle switches: boom, boom, boom, boom. [Laughs.] And I remember thinking, âPhew, minor victory. Take solace in that and move on. Next task.â Thatâs my favorite story.â

A few weeks ago my dad told me something interesting. We were talking about my elementary school, and he said that in first grade I was given a reading test, and asked me what I thought I had scored on it. I guessed high school level, since Iâve always been a voracious reader. No, he said, you scored above college level.
To put that into a more personal perspective, I am the youngest/third youngest of around 20 cousins total for both my mom and my dadâs families. When I was in first grade, I had one cousin starting college. And I was already reading at a higher level than him.
Fast forward three years. At the end of fourth grade, we were given a test to see if anyone would join the âhigher levelâ special program at the middle school. I was confident, because I already knew, at 9 years old, that I was bored with the books in my regular classes, so I must be doing better than most of my classmates. I wanted to get into the program because I wanted to read more.
I did not get in. Do you know why? Because my math score was slightly lower than required. Even though I scored high in the other areas, my math kept me in the regular classroom, where I was bored to death.
I know some school systems do advanced classes on a subject-by-subject basis, like high school honors courses, but my school didnât. You had to be good at everything if you wanted to be challenged in one area. Not only that, but the kids who did get into the program? They knew who I was. Everyone did - I was the kid who was reading Goblet of Fire during recess in fourth grade. If people didnât know me because they knew my grandparents, they knew me because I was the kid who always, ALWAYS had a book. So those kids who did get into the program, when they realized I wasnât there with them⌠some of them got nasty. As kids do.
What Iâm saying is, kids arenât going to excel at everything. Some are light-years ahead in one thing, but dragging a little in another. Donât punish them for that - help them. Give them the appropriate materials for both helping that bad grade, and challenging them in their favorite area. We talk a lot on here how the âgiftedâ kids were hurt in the long run, and being on the other side, or more like caught in the middle, I can assure you that the âgiftedâ programs suck all around. Kids know what those programs are for. Itâs upsetting when you know that you should be doing something at a higher level, but thatâs taken away from you because something else isnât as good.
By all means, offer more advanced classes for kids. But make sure that itâs not split between âgood at everythingâ and âjust okay at everythingâ kids, because those of us who are âgood at something, okay at other thingsâ are just made to feel worse in the long run.
