doctors: you need to be an active part of your care

Me: okay great, here’s a list of symptoms and how they affect me on a daily basis. here’s up to date info/ research on 2 things I suspect could help/ could be possible diagnosis and I was wondering if we could look into this

For years, I’ve been drowning my anxiety and depression into work. I saw several doctors but they said I had no reason to have anxiety so that must be temporary. It wasn’t. I worked more so I couldn’t have time to do nothing. Because doing nothing is overthinking. Doing a full comic book in 2 months beside my full time job ? No problem, I can handle it. I actually couldn’t. Doing my comic was no longer a pleasure. I burnt out. Suddenly, I couldn’t do anything. I spent days crying in bed without knowing why. Why couldn’t I just get up ? What was the point anyway ? My comic book was pointless. I was pointless.

I then remembered what Jonny from Hope For The Day said. “It’s okay not to be okay“. Asking for help is being strong. So I went to the doctor again.

idk if this will help anyone else out but i had a lot of sensory sensitivities with socks, to the point that i used to cry when i had to wear them or would just refuse to wear them no matter what shoes i was wearing

but then i found these ones! they’re from the brand yaktrax and they’re called cabin socks. they’re on amazon here!

they’re meant for winter but i wear them every season because they’re the only ones i can stand. they have very soft plush stuff on the inside so the seam on the outside layer isn’t touching your skin. if that’s your kinda thing, then these might be good for you! 

the only downside is that you have to put them on kind of carefully or they might bunch up. but they’re nice and soft and thick and maybe they’ll help someone like they helped me :O

That is some ableist design in addition to being super classist…

Hostile design is ableist by nature. A recent design trend, for example, involves taking all sitting areas out of bus stops and replacing them worth “leaning supports” that force people to stand. These are wide hand rail type structures at about hip height on a standing adult.

Aside from the obvious ableist and classist problems, they are also hell for children and their guardians,since children’s short stature makes the rails useless, and because children desperately need rest spaces to accommodate their more delicate health and wellness.

Hostile public design is shit, and it needs to be shot, possibly along with the people who enforce it instead of actually solving the problems they want to “fix”.

How Pokémon Go is creating a barrier for gamers with disabilities

The augmented reality gaming app has taken the internet and world by storm, as people are desperate to catch and collect the characters, making friends and getting fit along the way. But not everyone can fully take part in the cultural phenomenon.

Hope Niantic listens and acknowledges this! The game isn’t even really out of beta yet, so much room for improvement. I also hope this pop-up community comes forward and helps disabled people participate. All those impromptu pokemon catching parties, shouldn’t be a big deal to organise carpools to get mobility impaired folks out playing as well. Or help people with mental issues like anxiety feel safe going out to catch some. Just like, if you’re going on a group pokemon hunt and can handle helping someone get there and back too, shout it out in the event?  I got faith in this. I see so many accounts of people having clean, positive gaming fun with Pokemon Go and I really believe most of us will want to share.

Think for a minute about the shit you’re saying

This is the ‘should videogames have easy settings’ debate all over again and as usual, disabled people get the short shitty end of the stick. Just stop and THINK about someone other than yourself for a second. 

If the game gets a setting that allows disabled people to play, and you, despite not needing it, use it to cheat and thus feel dissatisfied with the game, that’s YOUR problem. YOUR fault. YOUR responsibility. Don’t you think it’s really fucking selfish to insist that a game should NOT cater to millions of physically disabled people who already have extremely limited accessibility to everything in life just because you might be tempted to use the special features to cheat?

I am physically disabled. I cannot walk more than a few yards at very random intervals. I have the movement radius of an engineless car if I don’t have my motorised bike. I have a wheelchair for travel purposes.

I simply can’t play pokemon go like it’s “meant to”. I would very much like to try to play it eventually, because people seem to have so much fun with it. But as it is now it’s pretty much unavailable.. And snobby nerds gatekeeping doesn’t help either.

Hey guys! My friend is currently in a wheelchair because of a pretty bad car accident and she was upset that she couldn’t play. However! If you email Nintendo with some proof of disability (she used a handicap parking sign), they will change the settings on your game so that the Pokemon will come to you!

That’s awesome! I hope some people can take advantage of that and be able to play. Also, if you are able to drive at all, and you have any extra lures, take a drive to your nearest hospital, especially children’s hospitals, and see if there’s any pokestops located there. If there is, drop a lure on it, help the Pokemon come to the patients!

So maybe you’ve seen someone parking in a handicap spot and then walking right into a space or maybe you’ve seen a wheelchair user move their legs or get up from their chair, maybe you’ve seen a cane or a walker user take a few steps without it, maybe you’ve seen younger, prettier, even larger people using power scooters at the market or at theme parks?
