thinking fondly of this meme I made for a coworker years and years ago
Sucks how many people were taught that "horses put their ears back when they're mad" but then never taught the difference between "angry backwards ears," "mildly annoyed backwards ears," "pain backwards ears," "concentrated backwards ears," "sleepy backwards ears" and "just happens to be listening to something behind it."
"Horses put their ears back when they're mad" idk man i think it depends
These are all completely different expressions in completely different scenarios, and only two of them are decidedly negative.
Actually, I wanna talk about the third horse, the one putting its ears back in pain. Over the last 15 years veterinarians and animal scientists have worked out pain scales for most domestic animals by taking photos of the during routine procedures.
We know vaccines painful, and by comparing horses at rest with horses getting vaccinated, we've been able to determine how they express pain visually. By looking at horses with disorders like colic, broken bones, wounds, and so on, we can determine their facial expressions during more severe pain.
At zookeeper school we were drilled through the pain faces of the most common lab animals and livestock. Nowadays I believe this has become a routine lesson in all animal related fields, but the general public still doesn't know that this is a thing that exists.
Here are all the pain face/grimace scales I've been able to find. Please study them if you interact with any of these animals on a regular basis:

A few weeks ago Bandcamp's Ben Salmon penned an essay that made my ears perk up: "Why Power Pop is the Sound of Now". There are the requisite listening bars, but probably well over 40 other links to power pop then and now, U.S. and global. Many bands have been covered here, as I too have been on a power pop jag lately (and for more entire life).
I really enjoyed clicking on the bands I'd never heard of, and Red Bank, New Jersey band Beauty is fantastic. They really remind me of a cross of The Grip Weeds, The Smithereens and Marshall Crenshaw. But as Salmon states, their album, "I’d Do Almost Anything For You", is "an album of pure, uncut power pop—no noise, not much jangle, just a bunch of muscular, melodic tunes that would make Cheap Trick proud." Salmon then goes on to say that Mod Lang fits nicely next to Beauty. I can personally attest to that having recently seen Mod Lang open for The Lemon Twigs. Before nearly every song they exclaimed, "This next song is a rock song."
"I'd Do Almost Anything For You" is released by Strange View Records and is available for purchase on their website.

the fact that pro-monarchy arguments have degenerated, over the past few centuries, from “the king rules by divine right and is accountable to nobody but god”, to “uhm the royals generate a lot of income from tourism” will never stop being extremely funny to me
the monarchs… bad. but the castles? oh, the castles are positively lush with rats… 👅

Just off the top of your head, don't need to try and look it up to check out anything:
Can you name a web search engine that you used before Google?
Yes
No
Don't know/just want to see the results
The book I'm reading suggests that Google became so market dominant that most people couldn't name a search engine that came before it, so I'm curious.

I primarily used AltaVista and Yahoo before my 10th grade English teacher told me about Google in 2000. I have such a vivid memory of being like, "oh shit this IS a great tool..." which is hilarious to recall 26 years later.
James baldwin’s the artists struggle for identity. Btw.
"That I have experienced my share of traumatic experiences, have survived abuse of various kinds, have faced near death from accidental circumstance and from violence (different as the particulars of these may be from those around me) is not a card to play in gamified social interaction or a weapon to wield in battles over prestige. It is not what gives me a special right to speak, to evaluate, or to decide for a group. It is a concrete, experiential manifestation of the vulnerability that connects me to most of the people on this earth. It comes between me and other people not as a wall, but as a bridge."

Imagine if we did the “public libraries are punk” thing for other subcultures. Imagine if people made shirts that said “Soup kitchens are grunge” or “Mixed Use Urbanism is Juggalo”.
a thing about me is i basically never notice a wig or other kind of hairpiece in tv/movies. it has to be party city territory for me to even twig it. people will complain about characters' wigs looking bad and i will nod along but there is like a 90% chance i did not notice for a second while watching. i consider this mostly a blessing.
whenever people try to act like harry potter being comfort media for them matters at all i'm just like. cool i also grew up with it, i also have incredibly fond and nostalgic memories attached to it. but i'm also a complex individual capable of basing my actions on more than just immediate comfort and enjoyment
sometimes clouds really really look like something you could stand on top of and it makes me really really sad that you can't actually do that. i should get to jump from cloud to cloud bouncing around and having fun :[
