Johnny Lawrence’s Pokemon Team Roster
All Pokemon Are Chosen Based on What the Character’s Would Personally Pick, Rather Than Assigning Specific Types or Stats
Johnny wasn’t all too hard to figure out compared to other characters, that’s saying a lot
Johnny Lawrence is a simple man; He likes badassery, beer, and punching things. That’s Johnny in a complete nutshell. In that vain, that eliminated a lot of the softer, more frilly pokemon from this list because Johnny, as a person, just wouldn’t be interested in them. However, Johnny is also a lover and has a deep respect for his Pokemon companions and sees more than just the outside appearance of one.
Yes, appearance does matter to Johnny, but not to a complete fault.
His team ended up consisting widely of fire, electric, and fighting type Pokemon. Johnny would naturally gravitate towards those type of Pokemon, especially in his younger years when he obtained most of his friends. Just because I didn’t strictly didn’t assign types to trainers doesn’t mean certain trainers won’t naturally gravitate towards certain types.
But cool fire types wasn’t Johnny’s priority in picking Pokemon. Johnny picked Pokémon that he personally felt connection to. Unlike someone like Dutch who may have gone for strength and fear, Little Johnny Lawrence just wanted a friend. So even if a Pokemon didn’t look particularly strong to him immediately, if he felt a connection, he caught it. End of.
Johnny, at the end of the day, just wanted friends. And whether Kreese liked it or not, Johnny always saw his Pokemon as friends.
And that’s why Johnny is a good trainer.
Pokémon Obtainment Order:
Off the top, I fully believe Johnny is terrible at naming things. Therefore all his Pokemon have admittedly bland and basic ass names.
I thought it was funny, lol.
Aside for that, Johnny without a doubt loves his team, even if they’re a handful. Considering he would have probably picked the most naughty and hotheaded Pokemon on the market. Seriously, he gets bit and shocked and burned and kicked something terrible by his Pokemon.
Not on purpose of course (at least it’s usually not on purpose) but rather it’s just sheer clumsiness or just his Pokémon trying to play. All his Pokemon seriously lack grace in their movements, considering how powerful they are. Due to that, I’d think it’d be a running gag of him getting his hand chomped to set on fire because his Pokemon have self control issues when trying to do small things. Need to light a candle? Sets the table on fire. Open a beer? The entire can is crushed. Little jolt to start the car? A bolt of lightning bursts all the windows out.
It’s chaos but Johnny takes it in stride, because he’s a good trainer.
I chose the Pokemon before reading any Dex pantries and was surprised to find that were almost all noted to be aggressive or like to fight.
So let’s take a look at what I think Johnny’s perfect Pokemon team consists of!
1: Ace♂ | Arcanine (Fire)
Favorite Food: Mocha PokePuffs
Favorite Flavor Profile: Sweet
It has a brave and trustworthy nature. It fearlessly stands up to bigger and stronger foes.
Extremely loyal, it will fearlessly bark at any opponent to protect its own trainer from harm.
GROWLITHE has a superb sense of smell. Once it smells anything, this POKéMON won’t forget the scent, no matter what. It uses its advanced olfactory sense to determine the emotions of other living things.
It’s both clever and loyal, but if a stranger tries to invade its territory, it barks threateningly.
ARCANINE is known for its high speed. It is said to be capable of running over 6,200 miles in a single day and night. The fire that blazes wildly within this POKéMON’s body is its source of power.
This fleet-footed POKéMON is said to run over 6,200 miles in a single day and night. The fire that blazes wildly within its body is its source of power.
Its proud and regal appearance has captured the hearts of people since long ago.
The fire burning inside its body serves as the energy to fuel it as it runs great distances. It appears in many legends.
There are so many old tales about them that they’re called legendary Pokémon, but there are way more of them around than you’d expect.
Ace is Johnny’s companion Pokemon!
Before anyone says anything; no, Johnny Lawrence would NOT have a snake Pokemon. I don’t care if he was Kreese’s top student or was loyal to Cobra Kai as a teenager, Johnny would not choose a snake Pokemon.
It’s just not in his nature to.
There’s something to be said about the things Johnny chose vs what he was forced to accept during his time at Cobra Kai. Yeah, Johnny was a jerk, but he was also a sad, lonely kid who wanted to fit in and have a friend.
And a sad lonely kid who wants a friends will always choose to have a dog.
Arcanine is the embodiment of who Johnny Lawrence is as a person. Large, imposing, shaggy, and maybe even a little scary on the outside. But on the inside, he’s warm and has a big heart.
He also pairs well with Johnny. Standing side by side, these two look very bold together. Arcanine is a massive Pokemon with a lot of strength , so it shows how well Johnny can actually handle his Pokemon. But Arcanine also makes Johnny somewhat more approachable in ways too.
Despite being a little beastly, Arcanine is cute in the same way a Tiger is. It’s big animal that humans see as domesticated because they’re familiar with its docile counterparts (Dog and cats.) The upside here is that Arcanine is actually domesticated.
Another prominent reason Arcanine was given to Johnny because it’s a direct parallel for Daniel’s own companion Pokemon, an Alohan Ninetails. The Ying and Yang dynamic is still here folks! It’s only natural it’d be represented in their Pokemon.
So Arcanine is a great choice for a million different reasons for Johnny.
He’s a powerful fire type Pokémon that’s actually a lot softer and sweeter than one would think it is. I think that’s important for Johnny to have.
Fire and Ice duality forever.
How Johnny Acquired Arcanine
Johnny Lawrence is twelve years old and needs a Pokemon to join Cobra Kai.
He can’t join without one. Kreese only allows the most capable trainers to join. Not even having a Pokemon to show would get him turned away for sure.
So he goes out on his own to capture one because he wants to prove himself. He doesn’t want to be gifted one, that wouldn’t do him any good. He wants to do it on his own like a real Pokemon trainer.
He wants a special Pokemon. One that would wow Kreese and the Cobra Kai students. One that would be super strong and tough. One that would unique and wasn’t like any other Pokémon anyone at the dojo had.
One that would be his friend.
After hours and hours of searching through common bug Pokemon and boring fish, he finally sees it.
A little red furred pup, setting a leaf on fire.
And the Growlith sees him.
And he can smell Johnny. He can smell his determination and strength…and loneliness. And the Growlith decides that he’d rather play with Johnny than chase him off.
And after a while of fetch and setting things on fire, the Growlith follows Johnny hime, because he of course forgot the pokeball on his dresser, to be captured for good.
Ace is a picture perfect Arcanine.
He’s visibly older with a graying muzzle and eyebrows, but that doesn’t take away from his ferocious and magnificent stature. He’s huge and broad and still has a luxurious fur coat and mane. He still fights like he’s in his prime (mostly anyway) and he’s the fastest Pokemon in the valley, bar none.
Ace is everything you’d expect in an Arcanine; he’s loyal, strong, brave, and obedient to his master. He also had all of Johnny’s stubborness and temper to boot. But what Ace had that Johnny does not is brains!
Often times Ace is rolling his eyes at Johnny’s ideas and is the main impulse control of the group at large. He often has to physically hold Johnny back from fights sometimes and always gets his trainer out of whatever jam he finds himself in.
He used to be cocky when he was younger and quite mean too, but he’s mellowed out much more than Johnny has. He can still get annoyed and fed up with others, but is generally a lot softer and more approachable than he trainer is, despite his looks. He has a particular soft spot for all his students, especially Miguel’s Riolu, who he sees as his own.
That being said, when Ace is angry, all hell breaks loose. The last thing anyone ever want to see is Ace with a vendetta against someone because he’ll fight and chase them until one of them dies of exhaustion. He has very high dislike of both LaRusso and Kreese. LaRusso for the obvious, Kreese because he always knew deep down his way of treating Pokemon was wrong. He was never brainwashed like the others.
Ace’s favorite thing the whole world is to just spend time with Johnny. Sleeping, eating Pokepuffs, watching old sitcoms, whatever. As long as he’s with Johnny, he’s the happiest Pokemon in the world.
2: Razor♂ | Braviary (Normal/Flying)
Favorite Food: Wiki Berries
Favorite Flavor Profile: Dry
They will challenge anything, even strong opponents, without fear. Their frequent fights help them become stronger.
They pick fights indiscriminately. They grow stronger and more powerful each time they faint or are injured.
Known as a natural-born warrior, soon after its hatching, it will challenge its parent to a fight in order to gain their acceptance.
A combative Pokémon, it’s ready to pick a fight with anyone. It has talons that can crush hard berries.
They fight for their friends without any thought about danger to themselves. One can carry a car while flying.
The more scars they have, the more respect these brave soldiers of the sky get from their peers.
For the sake of its friends, this brave warrior of the sky will not stop battling, even if injured.
The more scars it has on its front, the more heroic it’s considered to be. Those with many scars on their back are mocked by the flock.
A Braviary is a no brainer for Johnny.
Eagle Fang is of course a huge symbol for Johnny already. A badass bird mixed with American pride, it’s a very Johnny Lawrence vibe. To have a Pokemon specifically capture both of those traits is just dumb luck in the making of this list. I don’t think there’s any other Pokemon this specifically accurate for a character. It was like Braviary was made for Johnny.
It was just fate I suppose.
Braviary is also just a natural pick in general, even without all the Johnny Lawrence subtext. They’re a fight oriented Pokemon who like to scrap with others regularly. Fighting among them is a way of life and is honorable. Running away is cowardly and is looked down upon. A pretty decent pick for Johnny’s fight forward team.
They also like to gloat about their accomplishments in life and have cool scars to show off. Something else Johnny might do. Basically, on all levels except physical, Johnny is Braviary.
I think a-lot of people probably think of Braviary if they consider what Pokemon Johnny would have. It’s just too obvious not to choose it.
How Johnny Acquired Braviary
Braviary is a Pokemon caught by Johnny after he opened Cobra Kai and well past his teenage years.
As a Gym Master and Sensei, Johnny needed to teach his kids how to catch Pokemon. And because Johnny believes in hands on lessons, he brought all his kids out to the wild to search for acceptable Pokemon to catch. Razor was the result of that lesson.
Already full grown, Johnny saw the intimidating Pokemon as the perfect challenge. A badass bird standing alone amongst skulls and bones. He was the perfect bird to have on his very own team. It resulted in one of the toughest matches he and Ace ever faced together.
Johnny didn’t even defeat the bird and every attempt to catch him resulted in the Braviary breaking out of the pokeball. Instead, they were at a stalemate with the bird, matching his combat ferocity perfectly. In the end, Razor stayed with Johnny out of respect and allowed himself to be captured, resulting in Johnny gaining one of his best team members.
Razor is a proud and noble Pokemon.
He’s covered head to toe in battle scars, chest and face smattered with them. His backside lacks any, indicating he’s never fled from a fight. He proudly shows them off to anyone who looks at him.
He’s lived his whole life in the wild and is still at heart a wild Pokemon. He doesn’t listen to anyone except those who he respects. A number he can count on only one of his claws. But he’s not disrespectful by any stretch of the imagination. He’s actually quite regal and knows his manners well.
He believes in gentlemanly battles, one on one in an open field with nothing but their own wits. He always sticks to his own personal moral code, whatever that may be, and gets blisteringly angry when tricked or cheated in a fight. Dishonorable action is the fastest way to make Razor mad.
He can also be quite haughty and big headed. Normally he keeps his own ego in check, but he knows he’s a great fighter and sometimes if he does too well against an opponent, he can get cocky. He tries his best to not be though.
He’s actually quite a fan of Daniel and meditates when he can, liking to keep his mind clear and his energy centered. But he loves Johnny the most. He couldn’t have asked for a better trainer and he’d do anything to keep fighting by Johnny’s side.
Razor’s favorite thing to do, besides fighting and showing off his battle scars, is tell stories to the little Pokémon. He’s often perched on his stand with the student’s Pokemon around, captivating them with a heroic deed that he did when he was wild. Obviously none of the humans understand what he’s staying, but by how wonderstuck the other Pokemon are, the stories must be pretty cool.
3: Rambo♂ | Machamp○ (Fighting)
Favorite Food: Egg Sandwich (Egg, Cucumber, Red Onion, and Cheese)
Favorite Flavor Profile: Salty
Very powerful in spite of its small size. Its mastery of many types of martial arts makes it very tough.
Its whole body is composed of muscles. Even though it’s the size of a human child, it can hurl 100 grown-ups.
It loves working out. As it gazes at its muscles, which continue to swell day by day, it becomes more and more dedicated to its training.
Its muscles never cramp however much it trains. It lives in the mountains away from humans.
Its formidable body never gets tired. It helps people by doing work such as the moving of heavy goods.
A belt is worn by a MACHOKE to keep its overwhelming power under control. Because it is so dangerous, no one has ever removed the belt.
It happily carries heavy cargo to toughen up. It willingly does hard work for people.
Machoke undertakes bodybuilding every day even as it helps people with tough, physically demanding labor. On its days off, this Pokémon heads to the fields and mountains to exercise and train.
Its four ruggedly developed arms can launch a flurry of 1,000 punches in just two seconds.
MACHAMP has the power to hurl anything aside. However, trying to do any work requiring care and dexterity causes its arms to get tangled. This POKéMON tends to leap into action before it thinks.
With four arms, it can attack and defend simultaneously. It’s said to have mastered every martial art in the world.
It can lift heavy loads with the greatest of ease. It can even heft dump trucks. But its clumsy fingers prevent it from doing any precision work.
There’s many fighting Pokemon that could suit Johnny, but Machamp is the most classic pick.
As a first gen Pokemon, he was a better contender for Johnny to get when he was young. And a powerful Pokemon like Machamp is the perfect pick amongst others. It’s the classic fighting type Pokemon, one of the first you think of when you think of the fighting type as a whole.
The brute strength and showy nature of the Pokemon suits Johnny well, and there’s fewer Pokemon the embodies the power of punching things like Machamp does! I’d imagine Machamp is one of the Pokemon he’d use often for teaching his students. Who better to learn punching from?
But Machamp is also a hard worker, which is a benefit to Johnny both in his labor days at the start of the series and an asset in general. Johnny isn’t the most productive person in a good day. To have such a work oriented Pokemon is good for him. Keeps him motivated and active. Lord knows he needs it, lol.
Machamp embodies the look of the tough, badass flair that Johnny lives his life by and is an easy pick for him to have one on his team!
How Johnny Acquired Machamp
As said, this Machamp has been with Johnny for a long, long, time. A Cobra needs a tough Pokemon to strike their opponents down with one hit! So when Johnny encountered a gutsy little Machop crushing rocks in his backyard, it was a no brainer for Johnny.
The catch wasn’t all that special to be honest, but the results of the catch were.
The Machop he found was so different to his little dog Pokemon and his rat. Having a humanoid Pokemon who was very much fighting focused gave Johnny a lot more power on his side. He also learned how to properly train his Pokemon since Machop naturally train in their own. Johnny had the little Machop become his co-trainer to help bulk his other Pokemon up.
All his Pokemon benefited from the new partner, including the Machop itself. As the Pokemon grew, he stayed the primary co-trainer. It remains that way to this day.
Rambo is one of Johnny original team members and is one of his most dependable teammates!
Rambo looks pretty scary, but he’s actually a very sweet and brave Pokemon. Unlike some of his other teammates, he has infinite patience and loves to help others. One of his key traits is that he’s always smiling! He absolutely adores helping his and Johnny’s students train and will let them use him as a target for new moves. Nothing ever hurts him but he pretends to get hurt when little Pokemon train with him to help build their confidence!
He was also Johnny’s best worker as a handyman and was able to shoulder any tasks Johnny asked him to do. From lifting cars to moving any building material possible, Rambo always had it covered. He’s also the primary co-sensei aside from Ace. Machamps are natural fighters and live to train, so having him look over the students was an easy choice to make. He’s a diligent and experienced trainer so everyone benefits from Rambo’s expertise.
All that being said, the poor guy is also rather clumsy and lacks grace in his movements, often breaking delicate objects though he tries his very best to be careful. He still gets embarrassed when he does inevitably knock something over and tries to fix it, often resulting in the object in question becoming even more destroyed.
Rambo gets serious in fights. He takes any opponent he faces as potentially dangerous and is always on his guard. He often fearlessly takes hits for his other teammates and his trainer whenever possible. Rambo would never let anyone else get hurt if he could do something about it.
Rambo’s favorite thing to do, besides training of course, is snoozing on Johnny’s couch. He loves M.A.S.H reruns and snacks on berries while watching them with his trainer.
4: Flash♂ | Flareon (Fire)
Favorite Food: Mint Pokepuffs
Favorite Flavor Profile: Bitter
It’s ability to evolve into many forms allows it to adapt smoothly and perfectly to any environment
Its genes are easily influenced by its surroundings. Even its face starts to look like its trainer
It’s a rare Pokemon that adapts to harsh environments by changing its appearance and capabilities when evolving
Current studies show it can evolve into an incredible eight different species of Pokemon
Flareon’s fluffy fur releases heat into the air so that its body does not get excessively hot. Its body temperature can rise to a maximum of 1,650 degrees Fahrenheit
When it catches prey or finds berries, it breathes fire on them until they are well done, and then gobbles them up
It has a flame chamber inside of its body; it inhales, the breathes out fire that is over 3,000 degrees Fahrenheit
Eevee Evolutions are always easy to give out.
There’s a lot of them, they’re pretty strong, and they’re super cute and cool. Giving an Eevee to Johnny (and Daniel) may be a little cliche, but everyone knows them having a Flareon and Vaporeon, respectively, makes a lot of sense.
Eevee is an early gen pokemon and has a lot of versatility. And Eevee is popular. Popular to see in the fandom, popular in universe as a gift!
Of course Johnny giving him a fire stone was just written in the stars. Why have one fire dog when you could have two?
Might not be great team balancing. But this Johnny Lawrence we’re talking about. He likes badass shit, fire, and he doesn’t know what balance is.
How Johnny Acquired Flareon
Johnny’s mom got him his own little Eevee not long after he got in to Cobra Kai, so Ace and Striker could have a new friend and so Johnny could have another member on his tiny team.
Even though Johnny is the type of guy who likes to capture his own pokemon, he loved his Eevee all the same. His mom had saved up a decent amount of money to the Pokemon and was so excited to give it to him. The fact that Sid had nothing to do with it made it extra special.
The Eevee spent a good amount of time between him and his mother, which affected the Eevee’s temperament a bit more than he would have anticipated. Not in a bad way, but the Eevee was more of a thinker than a jock, to put it in simple terms. Which was a good thing since Johnny and the team were all pretty stupid when they were young.
In recent years, Flash reminds Johnny of his mom and always feels especially warm and fuzzy whenever they spend time together.
Flash is a good foil to Ace.
Where as Ace is Adamant, headstrong, and firm, Flash is a sassy and clever Flareon. He likes to tease his other teammates every now and then just for fun. He’s a lot more carefree and goes with the flow, unlike both Johnny and Ace.
He rare ever gets mad and instead likes to play and pull little pranks to get a laugh. Johnny calls him a ‘little troublemaker’ just like he does to Spitz and Starchild, but it’s mostly to tease him back. Flash is nowhere near as naughty as those two. He’s more of the witty, snappy type rather than a pure prankster.
He’s also just plain intelligent, probably the smartest of Johnny’s team aside from Striker. Flash is more academically intelligent to parallel Striker’s wisdom and common sense. Flash uses his wits to often solves problems that need to be thought through and can even write in English.
Often times, he pays Johnny’s bills, manages the finances, and is shown to be exceptionally well read.
All that cleverness isn’t just for pranks and taxes though; Flash is an excellent battler and is quick on his feet, metaphorically and literally. He’d much rather play around an opponent, tricking and baiting them until he can hit them full force. He’s tough, but he doesn’t rely on brute strength alone like some of the other’s in Johnny’s ranks.
Flash’s favorite thing to do is read! It’s silly but often he’ll be sitting with a book on the floor, reading through many classics and even poetry. He even has his own pair of reading glasses that Johnny did not buy for him at any point. Johnny indulges him but picking up books at garage sales, which Flash is always excited for.
He may be the most different in personality to his friends and trainer, but he still loves them a lot!
5: Lee♂ | Hitmonlee (Fighting)
Favorite Food: Sweet Poffins
Favorite Flavor Profile: Sweet
Even though it is small, it can’t be ignored because it will slug any handy target without warning
Tyrogue become stressed out if they do not get to train every day. When raising this Pokemon, trainers must establish a regular training schedule
It is famous for its eagerness to fight and always nurses injures from larger foes
It’s always bursting with energy. To make itself stronger, it keeps on fighting even if it loses
When kicking, the sole of its foot turns as hard as a diamond on impact and destroys its enemy
Hitmonlee’s legs freely contract and stretch. Using these springlike legs, it bowls over foes with devastating kicks. After battle, it rubs down its legs and loosen the muscles to overcome fatigue
When in a hurry, its legs lengthen progressively. It runs smoothly with extra-long, looping strides
This Pokemon has amazing balance. It can kick in succession from any position
So…Sweep the Leg, anyone?
Yeah, this one is all because of that, lol. Now I don’t think Hitmonlee is a bad idea for Johnny to begin with anyway. But for him to have a Pokemon with Low Sweep and to specialize in kicking is an idea that I couldn’t say no to. It was too perfect, too funny.
Kreese has a Hitmonchan, I’d think Johnny tried to emulate that when he was younger. Try and be closer to Kreese. Bond with him, you know? Of course he got a Hitmonlee because he didn’t know how to train his little Tyrogue. But he got his Hitmonlee and dubbed him as such, Lee. Like I said, Johnny is awful with naming things.
But he got a good friend and he got a good co-sensei! I gave him Coaching for a reason. He’s teaching all the students Low Kick and how to kick properly.
How Johnny Acquired Hitmonlee
As mentioned, Kreese had a Hitmonchan.
Johnny wanted nothing more than to be close with Kreese, so he went out seeking a little Tyrogue too. It took some searching, but the actual capturing of the Pokemon was not the hard part, the training was.
Mostly because Johnny didn’t know how to train the Pokémon correctly.
Because of this blunder, Johnny was shocked to find that his little Tyrogue evolved into a completely different Pokémon! The boys made fun of him for days, but Johnny’s disappointment quickly grew into surprise once he saw how kickass (pun intended) this new Pokemon was.
Soon no one was laughing because the Hitmonlee was a fighting machine and mowed down Johnny’s friends easily.
Johnny would later say it was all intentional, a fabulous lie.
Lee is the no nonsense member of Johnny’s team.
Lee is humorless but well meaning Pokemon. He doesn’t joke around like Johnny’s other Pokemon do; he does not tease or boast or relax even really. He’s just a responsible and monotone Pokemon.
Not to say he doesn’t love his family, because he does. It’s for that reason that he takes his role so seriously. He makes sure things get done and everything is in order. He makes breakfast in the morning, make sure everyone pitches in to clean, and carries Johnny to bed when he’s drunk. He’s not the leader, that’s Ace, but Ace trusts him with the important things.
Aside from Ace, he gets alone best with Flash. He likes to read sometimes with him. He also likes Razor when he joined the ranks and they often spar together. But as stated, Lee doesn’t relax much. He’s either working or waiting to get to work again.
Of course he’s a superb fighter. In fact he’s a perfectionist. Lee mostly only needs to strike his opponents once. After one kick’s they’re usually knocked out cold. Unlike his teammates, Lee doesn’t feel the need to compete or act like he’s better than others. But he doesn’t like boastful trainer or Pokemon and never backs down from a challenge.
So if someone squares up, he’ll put them back in their place.
When he is convinced to relax, Lee does enjoy music. Not the heavy metal his trainer and teammates enjoy. Just nice calming music. Maybe some tea or coffee and a poffin. Sweet poffins. He likes sweet things too.
6: Ash♂ | Charizard↑ (Fire/Flying)
Favorite Food: Spicy Brittle Bones Curry
Favorite Flavor Profile: Spicy
The flame on its tail indicates the strength of its life force. If it’s healthy, the flame burns brightly
From the time it’s born, a flame burns brightly on the tip of its tail. It’s life would end if the flame went out
The flames that burns at the tip of its tail is an indication of its emotions. The flame wavers when Charmander is enjoying itself. If it becomes enraged, the flame burns fiercely
It has a preference for hot things. When it rains, steam is said to spout from the tip of its tail
It’s very hotheaded by nature, so it constantly seeks opponents. It calms only when it wins
It has a barbaric nature. In battle, it whips its fiery tail around and slashes with sharp claws
Tough fights excite this Pokemon. When excited, it may breath out bluish-white flames
When it swings it’s burning tail, it elevates the temperature to unbearably high levels
If Charizard becomes furious, the flame on the of its tail flares in a bluish-white
It flies around in search for powerful opponents. It breaths intense flames that can melt any material. However, it will never torch a weaker foe
It is said that Charizard’s fire burns hotter if it has experienced harsh battles
Its wings can carry this Pokemon close to an altitude of 4,600 feet. It blows out fire at very hot temperatures
Another pick that may seem uninspired, but if you really don’t think Johnny, Daniel, and Ali had a Charmander, Squirtle, and Bulbasaur respectively, then you HATE FUN!
Of course the OGs had the OGs!
And Charizard is a great Pokemon for Johnny! He’s powerful and headstrong, and is is another flyer for Johnny’s team. Considering he gets Braviary late, the Zard would be his main way of flight. Johnny also has a limit on special attackers, so Charizard being flexible is a nice change of pace.
With his mega evolution, Johnny also gains a dragon type, a type he lacks entirely on his team thus far. While it’s not required, having good type coverage is just a smart idea in general, even if it’s ignored a lot on these lists.
Again, Charizard is another hot tempered, thrill seeking Pokemon. The Dex entries note how Charizards go out to find strong enemies to fight and how ill tempered they can be. They’re also noted to never punch down and treat smaller opponents with more kindness, not even using their fire breath on them. So they’re honorable too, which is nice for Johnny.
How Johnny Acquired Charizard
The only gift he’d ever received from Kreese.
Once Johnny had proved himself to be a vital trainer in his ranks, Kreese instructed him to go out and seek a very special Pokemon to catch. A special Pokemon that not many people saw in the wild, if ever.
A special mission Kreese joined him on.
It was a very important memory for Johnny. They tracked the Charmander for a very long time and spent days trying to find it. All the time, it felt like a father/son camping trip and Johnny was able to bond with his sensei. Johnny being Johnny, it was something he cherished deeply.
He got the kind of dad he always wanted.
Of course they found the Charmander in the end and Johnny caught it and loved him immensely. Something that affected the Charmander deeply, making him a very happy and loving Pokemon back.
Ash is a good natured and high spirited Charizard!
Ash is the most social member of the team. He has a good repose with everyone, save for Lee who finds him overbearing and too carefree, and is basically here for a good time. He’s pretty close to Rambo and Flash, who have the same sense of humor as him, but his best friends are Little Dude and Spitz. They’re often training together, sleeping together, or just hanging out. In fact, it’s very common to see either Spitz or LD sitting on Ash’s shoulders.
Aside from his own teammates, Ash gets along with everyone else too. He’s respondent to everyone’s commands and will often join other teams to battle when called upon. He also gives frequent rides to anyone who needs a flyer. More often than not he flying around with one of the kids on his back, usually for fun.
Ash doesn’t take fighting as seriously as the others. He does love to battle and show off his skills, but it’s more a game than a lifestyle. He takes losses well and he’s always a good sport. He’s considered of the best sensei’s to his and Johnny’s students to his positive attitude and encouraging nature. Johnny does catch his goofing off a lot though, which he takes in stride.
Ash’s favorite thing is spending time with others. He’s a social butterfly and loves to connect with others. He likes to train, play, relax, you name it. As long as it’s with someone else, he’s a happy guy. But of course his preferred partner to hang out with is Johnny.
7: Spitz♂ | Raticate (Normal)
Favorite Food: Spicy Moo-Moo Milk Cheese Curry
Favorite Flavor Profile: Spicy
Bites anything when it attacks. Small and very quick, it’s common to see many in places
Will chew on anything with its fangs. If you see one, it’s certain that 40 more live in the area
It eats anything. Wherever food is available, it will settle down and produce offspring continuously
With their strong capacity for survival, they can live in dirty places without concern. Left unchecked, their numbers multiply quickly
Gnaws on anything with its tough fangs. It can even topple concrete buildings by gnawing them
It uses whiskers to maintain balance. It apparently slows if they’re cut
Its disposition is far more violent than looks would suggest. Don’t let your hand get too close to its face, as it could bite your hand clean off
Raticate’s study fangs grow steadily. Too keep them ground down, it gnaws on rocks and logs. It may even chew on walls of houses
Some may say this is a boring pick, but I say no! This is an amazing pick for Johnny!
Radicate already gives extreme Johnny vibes to me. Along with being another classic Pokemon, I can see Johnny taking pity on the little overlooked guy and ending up with a little rat. Johnny fresh into Cobra Kai is still more concerned with making friends than having Pokemon as tools.
Johnny actually never saw his Pokémon as tools anyway, no matter how much Kreese pushed that agenda onto him. So Johnny wouldn’t have cared if Rattata was seen as ‘weak’ by others. He saw something special in him so he decided to catch him. And Johnny was right! Raticates can he really solid team members if you train them right!
And Johnny is a very good trainer.
Also, Cobra Kai is kinda like the Team Rocket of the CK-verse if that makes any sense. Cobra Kai in the original movies were the antagonist team. So, by that reasoning, the Cobras were like grunts. And therefore deserve classic grunt Pokémon!
And as much as Radicate is slept on, I think he’s actually pretty cool. He may not be the strongest, but he’s got spirit and he is pretty badass.
How Johnny Acquired Raticate
As stated, Johnny saw potential in the little rat pokemon when no one else did.
Often overlooked, Rattata were common and often used as free training for other Cobra members. They were everywhere and considered weak, so older members would knock them out left and right just to show off.
Johnny, freshly joined noticed one in particular. One spunky Rattata that would dodge and weave attacks and actually land hits on some of the older Cobra’s Pokemon. No, he’s never win, but he had potential.
So Johnny, armed with Ace and Striker, caught the little rat and immediately found that his instincts were correct; the Rattata was spirited, quick, a great fighter, and very, very mischievous. Even if he got bit every single day, Johnny didn’t regret getting his new friend.
Spitz is one half of the two troublemakers of the group.
Where as Flash’s pranks are lighthearted and always tame, Spitz is the real trickster of the group. He’s not a bully or even mean, he just can’t help but to cause mischief. He’ll eat all the puffins without permission, chew up the couch, steal important or valuable things (like Miguel’s inhaler) and tease the others by biting their tails or annoying them. He famously slashed the tires of multiple cars in Johnny’s apartment complex which cost him hundreds of dollars to fix.
He’s just a naughty mouse.
But he still loves his trainer and his teammates. He does try to be good sometimes, no matter how hard it might be or how badly he screws up. He tried cooking breakfast once and almost set the apartment on fire. He doesn’t let set acks get him down though. Spitz is famous for never giving up no matter how impossible something might be.
To the point of insanity actually. He still tries to fight Daniel’s Furret every time he sees him and has made Flash write letters to the Valley board to get the 1984 All Valley Tournament results wiped.
His best friends are Ash, Little Dude, and Starchild. Ash and LD never get upset with his antics and sometimes even help in his pranks. Though they mostly are there to keep him from getting into too much trouble.
Starchild and Spitz however are two halves of the same whole. They can achieve some insane shit together and while individually they’re already troublemakers, together they are a force to be reckoned with. Starchild is the schemer and the brains while Spitz puts everything into motion and does the hands-on work. They were paramount in helping the kids break into Silver’s Cobra Kai by cracking the security system.
Spitz’s favorite thing to do is eat! Spitz loves to snack on anything; berries, pokeblocks, poffins, puffs, you name it. But his very favorite food is curry! Spicy Moo-Moo Milk Cheese curry! A classic Johnny Lawrence dish!
8: Striker♂ | Manectric (Electric)
Favorite Food: Super Sour Pokeblocks
Favorite Flavor Profile: Sour
Electrike runs much faster than the human eye can follow. The friction from running is converted into electricity, which is stored in this Pokémon’s fur
Using electricity stored in its fur,it stimulates its muscles to heighten its reaction speed
It stores static electricity in its fur. It gives off sparks if a storm is near.
It generates electricity using friction from the atmosphere. In seasons with especially arid air, its entire body blazes with violent sparks
Manectric discharges strong electricity from its mane. The mane is used for collecting electricity in the atmosphere. This Pokémon creates thunderclouds above its head.
Manectric can be found beneath unnatural thunderclouds. People say it can run at the same speed as lightning strikes
It stimulates its own muscles with electricity so it can move quickly. It eases its soreness with electricity too, so it can recover quickly as well
It rarely appears before people. It is said to nest where lighting has fallen
What can I say? Johnny likes dogs.
Going down the list of all one thousand Pokémon, things just start to jump out at you. Not sure why, maybe it’s the mania that starts to set in after scrolling Serebii for the hundredth time. But every time I relooked at the list, thinking what Pokemon would suit Johnny, Manectric kept catching my eye. And after going over things again and again, here he is on the list.
Probably the strongest ‘trust me bro’ on the list, but seriously, trust me, bro. Johnny would totally have a Manectric.
He definitely has the looks that a Cobra Kai Pokemon needs; sleek and badass and oozes personality. Dangerous and fast and could probably crush you in an instant. Literally an instant in Manectric’s case. A Cobra needs to strike fast and nothing is faster than a Manectric.
But while Manectrics are dangerous, they are also known to be stoic and have self restraint. Something Johnny could use in a partner. His Pokemon, while having the capacity to be angry and destructive, should be better than him and be another factor in his life to learn balance. A way he didn’t even know he had.
Because just like being a good dad, being a good trainer is something that ground him and makes him a better person.
How Johnny Acquired Manectric
There was a time when Ace was both slow and friendless. Johnny and Ace had each other, but Johnny needed more Pokémon to be a real Pokemon trainer.
He also wanted to get Ace a real playmate. Someone he could train with all the time and run around with when Johnny was at school. Before anyone else, there was Striker.
Johnny was looking for someone else special. Someone who could match Ace’s coolness and power. Someone to stoke Ace’s flame. Oddly enough, he found the answer during a storm.
He was locked out of his house, thanks to Sid, and by chance saw a little Electrike all alone. Looking sad and scared. Johnny could tell he’d lost his mom and it spawned a day long adventure trying to find its family. But the three of them had bonded when he found the nest and the Electrike decided to follow Johnny home after saying goodbye to its family.
Johnny had gotten his second Pokémon and Ace got his best friend.
Striker is a cool and collected member of the team.
If Ace keeps Johnny in check, Striker keeps Ace in check. He’s the ultimate voice of reason amongst everyone is by far the most intelligent aside from Flash. He has the most common sense and lacks a temper, though he can get annoyed like everyone else. But he prides himself on being in control of his emotions.
He’s Ace’s best friend and therefore second in command, a title that he takes seriously and no one else does. No one ever listens to him, even though he’s the one always worth listening too. Everyone’s lives would be far easier if they actually listened to Striker’s advice every once and awhile.
He’s gotten used to this teammates not listening to him. It annoys him, but he knows there’s no teaching old dogs new tricks. If anything, he just tries to be there to fix things when shit inevitably goes wrong.
He’s the group safety net.
He’s the most competent fighter aside from Ace. He’s not bound by ego or a need to be the best. He’s just wants to help Johnny win because he loves Johnny and he wants to make him proud. He used to be faster than Ace when they were young, but Ace’s insane training regiment got him to be just the tiniest bit faster than Striker. Striker is both incredibly proud of his friend and peeved that he can’t beat his friend anymore in a footrace.
Still, Striker can move faster than lighting and uses his speed to beat his opponents rather than raw strength.
Striker’s favorite thing to do is play fetch! But not just any fetch. Striker likes Rambo to launch a frisbee as fast as he can so he can chase it. The father he has to chase, the better. He just loves to run. But he loves to play fetch with Johnny too, even if it’s not as fast or exciting. Playing with Johnny is still a hard thing to beat.
9: Little Dude♂ | Raichu (Electric)
Favorite Food: Spicy Curry-Noodle Sandwich (Noodles, Red Bell Pepper, Bacon, Jalapeños, Egg, Salt and Curry Powder)
Favorite Flavor Profile: Spicy
Despite its small size, it can zap even adult humans. However, if it does so, it also surprises itself
When Pichu plays with others, it may short out electricity with another Pichu, creating a shower of sparks. In the event, this Pokemon will begin crying, startled by the flash
Despite the Pokémon’s cute appearance, those who want to live with one should prepare to be on the receiving end of its electric jolts
It’s not skilled yet in controlling electricity. If you take your eyes off it, it may shock itself
When it is angered, it immediately discharges the energy in the pouches in its cheeks
It stores electricity in the electric sacs on its cheeks. When it releases pent up energy in a burst, the electric power is equal to a lightning bolt
When Pikachu meet, they’ll touch their tails together and exchange electricity though them as a form of greeting
Pikachu that can generate powerful electricity have cheek sacs that are extra soft and super stretchy
When electricity builds up inside its body, it becomes feisty. It also glows in the dark
If it stores too much electricity, its behavior turns aggressive. To avoid this, it occasionally discharges excess energy and calms itself
It can loose 100,000-volt bursts of electricity, instantly downing foes several times it size
If it’s electric pouches run empty, it raises its tail to gather electricity from the atmosphere
As Pikachu is the series mascot and is well known for being the protagonist’s Pokemon, I thought I’d be funny if Johnny had a Pikachu over Daniel. I thought that it’d be poetic irony on that front.
But the other, bigger reason is a parallel between Johnny and Robby. One of my first thoughts for Robby’s team was that he’d have an Alolan Raichu, given Robby’s surfer boy vibes and the fact that I filled his team with pretty cute Pokémon, lol. I love having parallels and connections in Pokemon teams as you can probably tell by now, so it was a very easy decision for Johnny and Robby to both have Raichu’s albeit different forms. It shows the similarities between father and son, but the obvious differences too.
Raichu also thankfully fits of bill of being pretty badass, powerful, but still approachable and sweet. Alternatively, Raichu’s also possess the ability to be pretty aggressive! Their Dex entries are filled with notes on how if they have too much energy built up, they get really aggravated and have to let off discharge to cool down. Similar to how Johnny punches shit when he’s mad.
I thought that was pretty neat!
How Johnny Acquired Raichu
Johnny found Little Dude as a Pikachu, notably when he was with the Cobras during high school. It was before his first championship but he had already been training for a while.
He was a pikachu that hung out near West Valley High, close to the fence line when the Cobras liked to hang out and smoke. First they didn’t really pay any attention to the little mouse. They were too busy doing their own thing. But the Pikachu was very interested in them.
At first, it was Bobby that took interest in him, as the others thought he was too soft looking to be of any use. But the Pikachu proved himself to be a fighter when Johnny decided to face off against Bobby in a test battle. Everyone was impressed that he held his own against Ace, who was still a Growlithe at the time. They dubbed him ‘Little Dude’ until they decided who would be able to keep him, as they all wanted the Pikachu for their team.
It came down to battles, which Johnny won of course. By the end, the name had stuck and Johnny became the owner of a scrappy little Pikachu.
Little Dude the a determined little underdog of the group.
Little Dude, or LD for short, has always been small and often overlooked by others. Because of this, he has a huge amount of determination to prove himself. He intentionally sought out trainers who he thought looked strong to take notice of him, which is what lead him to Johnny and the Cobras in the first place.
Little Dude doesn’t care about winning in terms of ego; he wants to be the best so people will take him seriously. In that vain, he always is a little bit unsatisfied with himself. He pushes himself more and more to be even better than he was before and gets pretty mad when he’s bested. He more often gets mad at himself more than others and beats himself up a lot when he screws up.
On the flip side, he’s super supportive of his teammates and thinks they’re all the best. He loves to train with everyone, but Ash and Spitz are his best buddies. Ash in particular helps him with his accuracy. Shooting Lightning at a moving target is better than just a pole.
Training doesn’t occupy all of Little Dude’s life though, not anymore anyway. LD proves himself in other ways by being one of Johnny’s most diligent and responsible Pokemon. During Johnny’s handyman phase, LD was one of the best workers behind Rambo and Ace. At home, LD does a-lot of the daily chores and takes care of Johnny when he’s drunk. During training, he takes great care in making sure the students train hard and makes sure to give out lots of support.
Little Dude’s favorite thing to do is finish something. Literally anything. If he wins a fight, best thing ever. If he cleans the kitchen, best thing ever. If he mails a letter, best thing ever. He just likes finishing jobs and doing things right. In that sense, he’s a great motivator for Johnny to finish things too. And Johnny always had lots of praise to dish out for LD, who absolutely adores being praised as well. Especially when the praise comes from Johnny.
10: Starchild♂ | Obstagoon (Dark/Normal)
Favorite Food: Dry Leek Curry
Favorite Flavor Profile: Dry
Zigzagoon (Galarian) Dex Entries:
Its restlessness has it constantly running around. If it sees another Pokémon, it will purposely run into them in order to start a fight
Thought to be the oldest form of Zigagoon, it moves in zigzags and wreaks havoc on it’s surroundings
Linoone (Galarian) Dex Entries:
It uses its long tongue to taunt opponents. Once the opposition is enraged, this Pokémon hurls itself at the opponent, tackling them forcefully
This very aggressive Pokemon will recklessly challenge opponents stronger than itself
Its voice is staggering in volume. Obstagoon has a tendency to take on a threatening posture and shout—this move is known as obstruct
It evolves after experiencing numerous fights. While crossing its arms, it lets out a shout that would make any opponent flinch
This Pokemon was suggested by @wicked-jade and it made total sense immediately.
Obstagoon is a punk/thrash metal inspired Pokémon with detailing referencing how KISS wore their glam makeup. And as a Twisted Sister fan, Johnny Lawrence is the best character to own an obstagoon, no doubt about it.
He’s a bit of an odd one out compared to some of Johnny’s other Pokemon, but being early Gen was never truly a requirement. Plus, Zigzagoons and Linoones are technically older Pokemon, it just so happened that Johnny got a British one, lol.
Obstagoon represents a very particular facet of Johnny’s personality. That being the more primitive and wild badass. Obstagoon shows Johnny’s love to party, rock out, and to just be a free spirit and get into fights because he can! Obstagoon’s flavor text across the dex entries specifically state it likes to rile other Pokemon up and fight them.
I’m sure the two have gotten in trouble together before.
While all Johnny’s Pokemon like to mess around and play, Obstagoon is the one who would probably go out and cause real mayhem with Johnny, at least when he was younger.
How Johnny Acquired Obstagoon
Johnny did not have his Obstagoon during his high school years. Rather he captured on during his twenties after his team was mostly fully evolved.
He was at a concert, too drunk to remember which bands were playing. Johnny being Johnny, he starts a fight and gets thrown out. He stumbles around for a bit, too drunk to actually go anywhere and passes out in an alleyway.
When he comes to, he finds that something small is hitting him. A weird looking wild Zigzagoon, pissed off because Johnny had knocked over its trash cans.
So Johnny watches as this tiny, punk looking Pokémon tries to beat his ass and laughed. He laughed and laughed because the thing had guts to try and take on a whole person. So he picks himself up and tries for about an hour to catch the damn thing.
Not because it’s even hard to catch really, Johnny just keeps missing with his throws. He finally does and when he takes him home, he’s happy to find that the little guy likes hard rock music.
He calls him Starchild, because the little bastard looks like Paul Stanley.
Starchild is the second troublemaker of the group.
Starchild is the youngest of the group and one of the sharpest. His wit is unmatched and he’s always up to pull some pranks or plan a heist on getting for snacks. He isn’t malicious at all, but a baddie who can’t help but try and steal candy from a store.
Because he’s the youngest, the others don’t burden him with a lot of responsibility, which is fine by him. He’d rather sleep and eat than work anyway. He’s definitely the laziest of the group by a mile. But when push comes to shove, he’s always willing to help Johnny and his friends, even if he pretends he’s too cool for it.
Starchild tends to be a bad influence on others, such as the time he taught the students and their Pokemon how to pick a lock. Because of this, he’s hardly ever put in charge of training or anything really. Johnny and Ace don’t even let him watch the students if they’re busy. He just gets too excited by the possibilities of doing something bad or pulling a nasty prank.
His best friend in the whole world is Spitz, the other mischief maker of the team. Spitz practically raised Starchild and the two are inseparable. The two are partners in crime and when they come up with a plan together, they are unstoppable. Starchild is the usual brains of their operations while Spitz does the hands on work. They were paramount in helping the kids take down Silver’s Cobra Kai.
Starchild’s favorite thing in the whole world is listening to music. He loves blasting music on car-rides with Johnny, hard rock and heavy metal being the preferred. He also adores concerts and listed to thrash whenever he attends them with his trainer. Johnny gives him the freedom to listen to music whenever he likes, the only stipulation being he had so use headphones when it’s nighttime. He gladly follows that rule if it means he can listen to Twisted Sister all night.
I have been working on this for literal months.
Pokémon AUs are popular everywhere, but I always thought it mixed exceptionally well with Cobra Kai as a series. They’re both training oriented, there’s morality questions, tests of friendships, and a championship to see who’s the very best.
It just made sense in my head and then I poured hours of my life into it, lol.
Special thanks to @cookietastic and @wicked-jade for listening to my insane ramblings about this AU! You inspire me to keep making this beast of a series by by sheer interest alone!
I hope you all tune in next time for Daniel’s Team Roster! And then everyone else’s…
Yeah, this is gonna be a big project.
