If I was JK Rowling and I wrote a plotline in my book series about a race of enslaved people whose horrible mistreatment at the hands of the bad guys is part of what establishes them as bad guys, and there were multiple crucial plot points that involve someone either being punished for dehumanizing them and/or rewarded for freeing them, and the only main character who is okay with their enslavement could not get his happy ending until he realized that he was wrong and aligned himself with freeing them, and the whole thing was a pretty explicit metaphor for the patriarchy and how some ‘tradwife’ women are complacent in their oppression but that DOESN’T make it ok for men to treat them like commodities… and then countless people online criticized me for ‘writing a plotline that excuses slavery’ ???? I would have the biggest crashout of my life. A lot of you like to say ‘Harry Potter was poorly written’ but what you actually mean is ‘I don’t have enough media literacy to understand a series written for children’
well house elves are an allegory for slavery not tradwives. So like, maybe get some reading comprehension?
That is a common misconception that people (usually Americans due to their cultural history) love to insist is true but actually have no evidence for.
House elves are nothing to do with chattel slavery. They are a reference to small, golbin-like creatures from Scottish folklore called brownies who used to come out at night and do housework while humans were asleep. Legends varied, but some of the ways in which they could be driven away was by giving them names or clothing. Sound familiar?
And as for SPEW - Considering what we know about Rowling and her long-term feminist views, isn't is far more likely that her SPEW was inspired by the actual real-life SPEW - a 19th century organisation called The Society for Promoting Employment of Women, which aimed to get women the right/ability to become financially independent from men.
And this right here is the crux of the issue. There are some very clear logical explanations behind many aspects of the Harry Potter books that get criticised these days, but they get ignored and drowned out bad-faith interpretations from people who are determined to hate the author and prefer to just make stuff up to prove she's bad.
The tide is turning 🖤

jackie is obsessed with nat but keeps hurting her feelings :-(
(part 1 / part 2 / part 3 / part 4 / part 5 / part 6 / part 7 / part 8 / part 9)
What if Jackie didn’t die that night because Nat went out to get her? What if Nat was the only one who didn’t ostracize Jackie in the woods like everyone else did? What if they both bonded over their shared hatred of the wilderness religion and the growing insanity in the group? What if Nat held Jackie as she broke down after their first hunt? What if they realized out there that despite their differences, they had the same ache in their hearts? What if Nat made the suicide pact with Jackie along with Travis, because she knew that the both of them would struggle the rest of their lives? What if Jackie got the unconditional love from Nat that she never could with Shauna? What if Jackie was the only one who wasn’t scared of Nat’s troubles? What if it was the both of them in the end?
the vision is so clear

please stop giving kids under 12 cell phones. if they need a phone like a flip phone will suffice. PLEASE please. As a teacher I am begging you, as a group of teachers here from 6 year olds to 18 year olds. Please stop. Tell your friends to stop. Talk about it with other adults. Please
Children, especially younger than 10, have no idea how to self regulate that and they need to learn through other means. Addiction to their cellphones is straight up your fault as their parent if you buy them their own phone with your money.
Fuck man.
LET THEM BE KIDS.
We gotta have training wheels for the phone. Seriously. As a millennial, we had it so good. We had landlines at home, so even before we got our first cell phones, we could still talk to friends and family without having to ask a parent. And when cell phones became a thing, they weren’t a highly-addictive ad-infested portal to the Torment Nexus. You could call and text and maybe play Tetris. (I miss my elementary school Nokia brick.)
Because it’s so hard to find a phone with no “smart” features, it seems to be either a smartphone or nothing, which means a lot of kids are totally isolated until they’re given a smartphone and thrown to the wolves. I’m getting my little niece a Tin Can phone (a landline for kids, basically) because she loves phone calls and I want to teach her more independence. I’ll be so stoked when she calls me and her titi by herself!
This is how I imagine Cormoran Strike, after he and Robin finally get together:
Tired and sleep deprived, disheveled but quietly happy and at ease.
Has just struggled out of bed, to go get Robin her favorite take away coffee and breakfast. Determined to put in the work and show Robin his appreciation and ♥️

Nikki being the victim in this movie is literally not up for debate btw.
Bear f*cked up big time. He paid the price, sure, but not before causing a lot of damage and trauma around him. Especially to Nikki.
There are two key moments for me that clearly highlight how Bear is truly not a good guy and never was. At all.
Firstly, and most importantly, when Nikki asks him to kill her as her possessed self is sleeping and unaware of their interaction. This is Bear’s first very straightforward opportunity to fix his mess. If he truly cared about her and her wellbeing, he would take immediate action. Like kill himself. Sucks, but gotta do what you gotta do, man. But no, of course. Bear takes personal offence into the idea that she’d rather die than forcefully be with him. It’s pathetic and enraging. Let’s remind ourselves here that Bear is regularly r*ping her (and forcing other forms of intimacy on her as well), enslaving her mind and quite literally stealing her entire life from her. The notion of consent is simply nonexistent and he’s actively okay with that. Before everything spirals into total chaos, he just wants to alter his wish, not erase it fully. He still wants that control over her, whether she is happy or not. She pleads for liberation from this curse and Bear decides to victimize himself, be selfish again and then he walks away. Ruining his ultimate chance.
Secondly, the suicide scene. Here’s the thing… It’s too late at this point. He missed out on several opportunities to make things better and he kept on prioritizing his power over Nikki. It led him to a point of no return where his life is irreparably turned upside down, his two closest friends were killed (because of him) and Nikki’s possessed self represents a very real danger for him (all his fault, once again). There is only one way out of this: He needs to die. Even with this unavoidable truth, Bear manages to fail again. He swallows all the pills and a few seconds later, he cowardly tries to undo his actions. The storyline leads to him overdosing and dying regardless, but this moment is decisive to represent his true character. It still wasn’t enough, somehow, for him to end it all. Truth be, it was unfortunately too late for Nikki one way or the other. The trauma was just too massive with the murders and the self-harm. He ruined her entirely.
If you ask me, the title is about him being horrendously obsessed with her, not the other way around. His obsession led him there. He refused to take a risk and potentially get in the friendzone. This was unthinkable and impossible to accept for him.
And also, that sickening story she presents at the party… It’s not just to generate a deeply uncomfortable and eerie atmosphere, it’s not just to shock the audience with its content. It’s about them. It’s literally them. She mentioned feeling a sibling-like connection with him. Nikki is being abused and tortured by someone she considered a brother. This is a tale about his cruelty. This is her cry for help. And it breaks my heart.
Masterpiece of a movie, truly.
