I keep seeing posts from people who claim they will be blocking anyone who posts any content from the new Harry Potter show that begins airing in December.

So I wanted to say you’re all being ridiculous. You consume media all the time by actual rapists. You watch movies with actors who have killed people. You read books written by racists and homophobes. All. The. Time. And it is so unimportant to you that half the time, you don’t even know.

This business with JK Rowling is a witch hunt. She follows a different kind of feminism than you do. And sometimes she’s a little rude about it. (But we don’t tone police here.) She has never put hands on anyone. She has started charities with her own money. And she is an outspoken advocate for women experiencing domestic violence.

She has expressed acceptance for LGBT people, yes including trans people. She just does not believe a person can genuinely change their sex, that some ‘inclusive’ terminology dehumanizes women and that sex segregated spaces are necessary to protect women.

There is a reason that JKR is being derided the way she is, and it’s not because she’s the worst person in the world. And if you step back, if you read her words, you’ll see why.

Anyway, keep putting Harry Potter content on my feed.

Daniel Radcliffe going on interviews and talking fondly about Potter as if he didn’t make a big show of disavowing JKR is pissing me off so bad. At least Emma Watson bothered to try and walk back her statements about Joanne, Radcliffe’s just trying to live the best of both worlds right now. It’s a remake for a reason and Alan Rickman wasn’t accurate to book Snape either (and he’d also be disgusted to see so many people harassing another actor in his name). Thank god these people are not casting agents they’d be terrible at their job

If I see one more person mention Adam Driver I’m going to loose my mind. Just because he has the “perfect look” for Snape doesn’t mean he has the mannerisms and character that Snape needs down.

You all should be thankful they didn’t do this fan service because no offense, but we’ve all seen his acting (especially when angry and emotional) and he would have made Snape look so childish, horrible, and bad. Snape’s anger and intensity is not one to play with. Even Alan (as legendary and great looking as he was) wasn’t good with Snape character wise sorry to break it you.

Those of you who interact with me regularly already know this, but for the newbies: I work regularly in the film and TV industry in Britain. I've done it all. I've been a camera woman, a film editor, an AD, I've worked closely with the Director of Photography, I've carried out auditions, I've acted and auditioned for roles, I've done special effects... It's hard to find a TV or film role I haven't held at some point of my life. Moreover, given my own relationship to the industry, I've plenty of friends and colleagues in the Harry Potter series and even I was around set at a couple points. And I've admired Paapa's work for years. Therefore I want to speak about this as someone who actually knows the hell she's talking about because I'm seeing a lot of racism in one hand, and a lot of plain ignorance in the other.

The task of finding someone half as incredible and memorable as Alan Rickman was near impossible. He was one of the best most emblematic actors of Britain and his talent was undeniable. But so is Paapa's. Granted, you know less about black actors' talent because let's face it, unless you're black, most of you are fairly unlikely to ever watch something filled with black talent, but Paapa's been around for a long time and everyone in the industry knows he's bound to become a legend. In fact, I first saw him as a brilliant Snape years before we even knew there was going to be a Harry Potter TV Series, in an entirely different TV series.

For those of you who simply are racist: This series was envisaged as a project where ethnicity, race and general background was largely not going to be considered, unless it was hundred per cent relevant for the role (e.g. Ron had to be a redhead, and those are, as far as I know, always white, and Dumbledore had to be old, etc.). Therefore, and this is what many of you aren't grasping, Paapa wasn't chosen because they said "let's look for a black Snape". This never happened. There was no specific decision to race swap anybody, among other reasons because when the books don't mention race, you can't swap it. As far as the books are concerned many of the characters could be any race, and the movies don't count because this isn't a movie remake but a book adaptation. So they simply looked for the best person for the job, did not clarify ethnicity or race in the audition calls, so anybody could show up, and Paapa was someone they specifically sought for his incredible talent.

For those of you who have legitimate concerns about race turning this into a white vs black storyline: Calm down and take a million deep breaths because there's just no freaking way that's happening. Colour is never ever mentioned as an issue in the entirety of the Potter books, so in the series, they're going to make sure people understand their version of racism is magical beings vs non magical vs creatures vs animals. Besides, let's not pretend this is a brand new thing. Everybody knows Harry Potter. Everybody knows it's got nothing to do with race. And before you come at me with the goblins crap, I'm sorry, but as a descendant of Jews I have never in my life looked at a goblin and seen Jews. In fact, I was unaware this comparison was ever made, until I came to live in Britain, and an anti-semite said goblins reflect Jews. So unless you're anti-semite, you really do tell the difference between both. Similarly, there won't be black vs white. Also Snape is kind of in the good side of things? So he's in Harry's side. And there are plenty of black and white actors in both the goodies and the baddies. So really, you'd have to twist this a hell of a lot to get the story to be like that.

And I've no doubt some cretins out there will twist things as far as they can, and manipulate, lie, gaslight people until they see racism, xenophobia, cultural appropriation and all sorts of crap where there's nothing to see, purely because these people have nothing in their lives to hold on to but irrational hatred and fear of a writer. So please have some brains and don't fall into that trap.

This is precisely why i'll always want to defend this casting choice even though i don't really trust HBO to make the most of it. The very fact that it elicited such strong and hostile reactions is proof that this was, conceptually, an interesting direction to explore. And i guarantee that this would not have happened if the character had been McGonagall or Sirius. It is BECAUSE Snape is such a morally ambiguous, layered and centric character of the overaching plot, that Essiedu's casting is so controversial. That means there is artistic merit there! It's not an empty choice, it's clearly saying something, even if it's not something people want / like to hear.

yeah, so @wild-wombytch refers to a post that deals with a person who got a tumor from HRT. They have made a post in a mainstream trans subreddit and the people on there got mad at them, because they didn't want to recognise the downsides of HRT:

The specific kind of tumor this person is talking about, a pituitary brain tumor, is (as stated) probably linked to HRT in trans women. This reminds me of the myriad of posts by trans women talking about galactorrhea. Galactorrhea refers to the spontaneous lactation without having given birth or breastfeeding a baby, which can occur in women and men. And what is the most common cause for Galactorrhea?

the most common cause of galactorrhea is a benign tumor in your brain. Even though benign tumors are not as dangerous as cancerous tumors, they can still cause severe dysfunction over time, because they can still grow slowly and compress vital areas of the brain. It's definetly not a topic to be joked about.

I was able to find a ton of "I am spontaneously lactating as a trans woman, is this normal"-posts in the span of seconds. Remember: Galactorrhea, a condition that is most commonly caused by a brain tumor. And what are the responses?

keep in mind: this person probably had not only been lactating, but even had blood in their nipple discarge. Up to a fifth of women who have that sign of discharge have a malignant cause for it - I can't imagine that the prospect for biological males on HRT is much better.

so yeah, instead of telling them to go see their doctor or anything, they link them to r/AdultBreastfeeding - it's a fetish subreddit for people who have a lactation fetish and want to induce lactation.

I mean, a large amount of the stuff I post here is kinda funny and absurd, but if you get a bit deeper in these online echochambers, it gets really dark real quick. Where did we go from "everyone should live their lives as they wish" to "downplaying brain cancer to own the terfs"? And this doesn't mean that every trans woman should immediately stop their HRT just to prevent that from happening. That's not what I'm saying here. I'm just saying that these people genuinely don't seem to care about anything other than their ideology, and even medical professionals are seen as "lying" and "bigoted", and people with brain tumors are accused of "attacking the trans community". How is this not a cult??
