What a wonderful way to start my morning. Grier is really committed to keeping this fanbase on edge. I was foolish and naive to think that he was truly safe, yes there have been many talks of trade and they primarily revolved around Ekky, but I didn't think this day would come so soon. I believed we'd have more time (with him), yet we never really do. Do we?
I still haven't fully processed that Ekky is gone. The tears genuinely would not stop. I opened TikTok, and the very first thing I saw was an Ekky edit to End of August. That was how I found out the news, which feels so cruel... The realization that he was actually gone hit me a few seconds later, and the feeling was absolutely devastating. (Had me bawling my eyes out before a final exam).
From a roster-construction standpoint, I understand the rationale. This is an aggressive hockey trade aimed at addressing an organizational weakness and accelerating the rebuild. The Sharks' prospect pipeline is heavily weighted towards forwards, and with the addition of another elite center prospect at 2OA, management is clearly trying to rebalance the roster by acquiring defensive assets rather than adding further depth down the middle.
That said, I can't pretend this doesn't sting. We're talking about a well-developed NHL center who had already established himself as a reliable top-six piece, being moved for a defenseman whose long-term NHL projection remains largely theoretical. The upside may be there, but it's still just projection versus proven production.
The part that really confuses me is the asset management side of things. For example seeing Delly receive an extension while Ekky is ultimately the player moved is difficult for me to wrap my head around. Yes, cap management, contract timelines, and future roster flexibility all factor into these decisions, but a part of me will always wonder whether there was another path that allowed the organization to retain Ekky while moving different assets.
The Sharks desperately needed help on the blue line, and their defensive corps has been a glaring issue for years. If this trade works, it could end up being a pivotal move in the rebuild. If it doesn't, the organization may have sacrificed a valuable young center for a gamble that never fully materializes.
What hurts most, though, goes beyond roster value. Ekky wasn't just another player; he had become one of the faces of the franchise. In a rebuilding team, those players matter. They're part of the identity fans grow attached to during the difficult years. Losing a foundational locker-room presence and fan favourite has consequences that won't show up on a stat sheet or salary cap ledger.
I also can't help mourning the relationship that could've developed between Ekky and Stenberg. We'll never get to see what that partnership might have become, and that stings a little. He will be missed dearly on the second line with Wenny and Kief they really had something going on.
I really hope this move pays off. Because if it doesn't, we haven't just lost a productive player, we've lost a piece of the franchise's identity.
Farewell Ekky, hope the Senators treat you well.
