the “sexy lamp test” but for disabled folks: if you can replace your disabled character with a beloved pet dog that needs an expensive surgery to survive then you have to throw out your manuscript
reblogging one of my most underrated posts: the dying dog test
I’m gonna make my medical school advisees do this on their application essays too I think.
#Happy Labor Day to Shrek I guess

i couldn’t find anyone in the notes doing the obvious research, so I did it: if you wanna recreate this experience, play It’s Gonna Be Me at 11:57:51.
If it’s already May where you are, I’m sorry this important info didn’t reach you sooner.
Update: it’s exactly as satisfying as the video makes it look.
Imagine if a like 8 foot tall guy that looked kinda like an alien species just kinda showed up at the house you rent a room in and crashed on the couch and at first everyone hated him but you kinda just accepted this weird massive kinda-human alien species thing as a part of your group even though he's like twice the size of everyone else there
Cuz that's literally happening to sea lions in San Francisco right now
So there's two species of sea lion in North America: the California sea lion, ranging along California (including Baja) but not ranging into the north coast or into oregon
And the Stellar's sea lion, which are WAY bigger and live in Washington, British Columbia, and Alaska
A male Stellars sea lion showed up in SF like a month ago and just kinda. Didn't know what to do, and joined a colony of California sea lions, and is just kinda chilling there now.
Weird vagrant species happen from time to time, but this is just a particularly funny instance of a highly social species getting very lost, and just trying to blend in with its closest nearby relatives
Almost tragically funny the way Jesse does not at all haunt the narrative of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Like. He is set up as being a trio with Xander and Willow, and for all intents and purposes is meant to feel like one of the main cast for that first episode (to the extent that Whedon originally wanted him in the opening credits of the pilot so his death would come as a surprise), but then he dies and it’s a Moment, sure… but Willow and Xander just… get over it. Just like that. And then he’s never brought up or even implied to be relevant again.
Going forward, Xander and Willow pre-Buffy’s arrival in Sunnydale are only ever spoken about in terms of “Xander and Willow” exclusively, no mention of Jesse. I understand this was a practical narrative choice by the writers and the show could’ve had a different vibe and journey for Xander and Willow if they did go everywhere with the spectre of the best friend they couldn’t save hanging over them (and I’m certainly not saying I would’ve preferred it if they did) and maybe we’re actually not meant to interpret Jesse, Xander, and Willow as a trio, and more “Xander and Willow, best friends since childhood - and also Xander’s friend Jesse” but if we were, that is fucking brutal for Jesse.
What if you were violently murdered and your best friends moved on really easily, actually, completely unaffected by the horrid conclusion to your too-short life. What if you were replaced before your body was even cold, with someone they went on to have way more meaningful friendships with than you ever got to. What if, to the people closest to you, from the moment you died it was like you had never been alive.
I can't handle this
why is "mummies are so rare bc the british ate them" always presented as like a morbid fun fact and not an example of heinous racism and dehumanization of people of colour to the point of cannibalism. a little bit odd if im honest.
just wanted to add that this is the first time i've seen "british people ate mummies" referred to as "cannibalism," which is a really interesting thing because like. so many times in history classes growing up, "natives" and "indigenous peoples" were purported to engage in "cannibalism" as some sort of explanation for why they were colonized/murdered/etc., but. i just googled. cuz i was curious when british people started/stopped eating mummies, which is definitely cannibalism, yep, human eating human = cannibalism, and.
oh.
would you look at that.
England’s King Charles II took medication made from human skulls after suffering a seizure, and, until 1909, physicians commonly used human skulls to treat neurological conditions.
huh.
Noble’s new book, Medicinal Cannibalism in Early Modern English Literature and Culture, and another by Richard Sugg of England’s University of Durham, Mummies, Cannibals and Vampires: The History of Corpse Medicine from the Renaissance to the Victorians, reveal that for several hundred years, peaking in the 16th and 17th centuries, many Europeans, including royalty, priests and scientists, routinely ingested remedies containing human bones, blood and fat as medicine for everything from headaches to epilepsy. There were few vocal opponents of the practice, even though cannibalism in the newly explored Americas was reviled as a mark of savagery. Mummies were stolen from Egyptian tombs, and skulls were taken from Irish burial sites. Gravediggers robbed and sold body parts.
Same source:
the poor, who couldn’t always afford the processed compounds sold in apothecaries, could gain the benefits of cannibal medicine by standing by at executions, paying a small amount for a cup of the still-warm blood of the condemned. “The executioner was considered a big healer in Germanic countries,” says Sugg. “He was a social leper with almost magical powers.” For those who preferred their blood cooked, a 1679 recipe from a Franciscan apothecary describes how to make it into marmalade.
so. uh. yeah.
he does vex and perplex me
I love when a meme gets so many steps away from its source material that it would be completely incomprehensible if I didn't know what today's date was
