I stayed hours past the end of my shift after a night shift one day to keep an older man company. His cat had taken a sudden turn for the worst overnight, and he was called in to say goodbye. He was a wreck, and I was asked if I could go over aftercare options with him, and a 5 minute job turned into a 2 hour interaction. He sat and cried as I put fur clippings into little pouches for him to take home. I sat and listened to him tell teary-eyed stories about his cat and I understood how deeply he loved her and how deeply she loved him. His wife was overseas and grieving alone. He was going to go home to an empty house. It was 2 hours past the end of my shift, but I listened and tried to help him feel less alone. Near the end of a long conversation, he told me about when his wife’s mother died. His wife offered to help prepare the body. Afterwards, she told him that as she cleaned the body, she began to feel at peace. As she washed her mother, she also washed away all grief and fear of the future. And he told me that he felt the same thing, sitting with me and telling stories and taking fur clippings. He was preparing the body and letting it go, all at once.

I feel so privileged to have been able to walk this man through an incredibly difficult time. In the emergency veterinary industry, we see so many patients die daily that we can become numb to the grief that the owners feel. It’s especially difficult to remember that everyone displays grief differently, and the crying clients aren’t the only ones feeling pain. The silent, stoic clients feel it too. This experience reminded me of how deep pain can go. It was being felt right in front of me, but also across the sea. It would be felt in the hearts of the children who did not know what had happened yet. It would be felt at home, in an empty house. It would be felt as he walked out the door, and as he picks up the ashes next week. It would be felt every time he thought of her name, or saw her favourite napping window, or heard a quiet purr in the back of his mind. Grief doesn’t stop when our clients leave the building, and I suddenly can’t understand why we don’t do more to support our clients. People have been so surprised that I stayed so long after a busy shift, but I was just doing the decent thing. We need to do more.

PSA on what a vet tech is

We always want to hold your pet because we want to keep you, your pet, and us from getting hurt

We ask all those annoying questions because it helps the veterinarian come up with a diagnosis

A vet tech helped you pick out the best heartworm prevention option for you and your pet

When you called the clinic because your pet ate your medication, the receptionist asked a vet tech for advice first

A vet tech drew your dog's blood for a heartworm test. while they were trying to pull away. through fur.

A vet tech made sure treatment costs stayed within your budget

When your dog is hit by a car and can't breathe because their diaphragm is shredded, a vet tech is watching your pet's heart rate and breathing for them during surgery

When you leave your pet in the hospital, a vet tech is the one placing an IV catheter in your pet's leg - without anyone to restrain for them, because there aren't enough techs to spare

A vet tech is scrubbed in to surgery and holding the incision open so the vet can stop the bleeding from a hard-to-reach vessel

The veterinarian might recommend those x-rays and blood work, but a vet tech is shooting those x-ray films, drawing blood, and running that blood panel

A vet tech is reading that fecal sample or looking at those ear swabs

A vet tech is describing your pet's medications and explaining how they work and interact with other meds

A vet tech calculated dosages, induced anesthesia, and intubated your pet for surgery

A vet tech cleaned and polished your pet's teeth - and maybe even pulled a few of those loose teeth, too

A vet tech stayed with your pet after surgery and watched over them

A vet tech bandaged your pet's injured leg

When your dog had a C-section, a vet tech delivered the puppies and made sure they started breathing

A vet tech removed your pet's stitches

When your pet with kidney disease wouldn't eat, a vet tech tried every food in the clinic until they found one your pet liked

When your pet was in the hospital, a vet tech called you every day to tell you how they were feeling

When your pet needed emergency surgery, vet techs had your pet anesthetized, clipped, and prepped before the veterinarian got back from lunch

A vet tech assisted with a euthanasia, then turned around and helped you with vaccines and preventatives with a smile on their face

Please remember this before you dismiss the vet tech in your exam room

Please for the love of everything holy vaccinate your puppies for parvo. You can start vaccines at 6 weeks of age and goddamn it is heartbreaking to watch puppies die of something that could be prevented.

I have had so many people tell me “I couldn’t do your job because of the euthanasias” and every time I want to roll my eyes.

Euthanasia is sad. Of course it is. But there’s also a sense of peace at the end of it. The patients who come in for euthanasia have typically been suffering for a long time. Their heart disease is progressing, their arthritis is so severe they can’t walk even with meds, they have neurological symptoms and the vet thinks it’s unlikely that they’ll recover. Life is ending but it prevents a pet - a pet that this family has truly loved and cherished - from suffering any longer than they have to. In a way we have saved them too, in the only way medically possible.

You know what gets me? The ones who arrive in critical condition and never make it off the exam table. The ones who go in for emergency surgery and never wake up from anesthesia. The ones we hospitalized who never get to go home again. It’s the patients that we try like hell to save, that we give 110% for.

Sometimes that just isn’t good enough.

As frustrating as it is having limited techs/assistants and equipment at work, I feel like it’s made me a better tech. I can put an IV catheter in all but the most fractious of patients by myself. No one is ever around to hold for intubating so I just do it myself. The overhead light above the prep area broke and hasn’t been repaired/replaced in months, so I can intubate most dogs and cats completely blind.

Necessity isn’t the mother of invention. The mother of invention is a frustrated vet tech with a lack of resources.

also… are you SURE? like, we’re still finding out so much about animals. Wolverines fathers, who we thought were not involved in caring for kits, turn out to travel around and collect all their kits from multiple mothers and take the whole group out on camping trips. Some spiders have tiny frog pets (!) or group up to communally raise their young. Wild sharks, crocodiles, and snakes have formed strong, documented relationships with people. 

this man Gilberto (Chito) Shedden nursed this crocodile back to health after it was shot in the eye, and they were best friends for the rest of the crocodile’s life.

this python came in out of the wild as a baby snake and curled up next to the family’s infant, Oun Sam­bat (or Oeun Sambat?) and they were inseparable for 12 years

Cristina Zenato removes hooks from sharks and they let her stick her hand down their throat to do it and they even bring other sharks who need help to see her.

It’s a relationship that goes beyond a single helpful interaction. For example one of the sharks that would show up when she first started swimming with them was a shark she called Foggy Eye who really didn’t like to be touched. One day, Foggy Eye showed up with a hook in her mouth that Cristina Zenato removed, and ever after, Foggy Eye cuddles when she visits, putting her head in Cristina’s lap and enjoying some petting

 We don’t know SO much. Some wolf spiders will adopt unrelated orphaned spiderlings and raise them. We recently discovered that the ant-mimicking jumping spider (below) produces “milk” and suckles its young until they are nearly fully grown.

SO. Don’t assume we know all about what creatures do or feel or whether or not they form social connections or bond with others.
