This is such an important and genuinely terrifying post. I could completely go off on the rise of anti-science, but for now I’ll just add: it isn’t just boomers that get deceived. This is a warning to all of us.
Pay ATTENTION to what you are being told. If you think you cannot be deceived, you leave yourself open to deception. Question, doubt, research research research. Learn about your personal biases, dig up any subconscious cognitive dissonance. Keep an eye on your mind.
It needs to be stressed that biases, not a lack of intelligence, is very much the issue here. Being aware of the need to fact check yourself is key: Intelligence won’t protect you from bad or unhealthy mental states, or keep you safe from cults of any sort. Intelligence will just make it easier for you to rationalize and attempt to justify the malformed tools you’ve taken/been given to yourself and others. You need to be wise enough to challenge yourself.
As a cult survivor, this is lethally accurate.
I recently started working in hospitality, and I’ll tell you guys right now, the trope of “there was only one bed” is not as rare as you’d think in real life. A few times a week, at least, I have guys come in who are working together on projects in town or passing through who have to literally book the last room I have available for the night and lo and behold — there is only one bed, and guess what, they give each other a side-eyed look and begrudgingly take it. So write it up, it happens all the time!!!
can’t relate to people who don’t reread their own fic. whomst else’s work will I grin like a maniac as I reread thinking it’s as if it was written just for meeeee
Favourite mirror scenes (1/?) – Max in Black Sails, episodes VI & VIII.
[Caption: two gifs where stands before a full-bodied mirror, right after a bath, in her room at the Inn. Her reflection is illuminated by sunlight coming from the window, and she’s looking straight at it with a pensive expression as dries her hair with a towel. Intersected between them there’s another scene, in black and white, taking place after Anne returns her to the Inn. Max is finally back in her room and she collapses on the floor, quietly crying, while on the side her reflection can be seen in the glass.]

One overlooked thing that really sets the Lord of the Rings films apart from other franchises is how earnest they are-
Most movies are so afraid of being “cheesy” that whenever they say something like “friendship is the most powerful force in the world” they quickly undercut it with a joke to show We Don’t Really Believe That! ;) Even Disney films nowadays have the characters mock their own movie’s tropes (”if you start singing, I’m gonna throw up!”) It’s like winking at the camera: “See, audience? We know this is ridiculous! We’re in on the joke!”
But Lord of the Rings is just 12.5 hours of friendship and love being the most powerful forces in the world, played straight. Characters have conversations about how much their home and family and friends mean to them, how hope is eternal, how there is so much in the world that’s worth living for…. and the film doesn’t apologize for that. There’s no winking at the audience about How Cheesy and Silly All This Is; it’s just. Completely in earnest.
And when Lord of the Rings does “lean on the fourth wall” to talk about storytelling within the film, it’s never to make jokes about How Ridiculous These Storytelling Tropes are (the way most films do)…. but instead to talk about how valuable these stories can be. Like Sam’s Speech at the end of the Two Towers: the greatest stories are ones that give you something to believe in, give you hope, that help you see there are things in a bleak violent world that are worth living for
Earnestness is so much cooler than all the hip cynicism in the world. You go LOTR
Plant of the Day
Tuesday 20 October 2020
A great plant combination for an autumn display with the feathery inflorescences of Calamagrostis brachytricha (Korean feather reed grass) and a Miscanthus sinensis cultivar (Chinese silver grass, eulalia) contrasting with the pink-purple flowers of the tall, slender-stemmed short-lived perennial Verbena bonariensis (purpletop vervain). This border was in the Hylands Park One World Garden, Chelmsford, Essex, which was the perfect place for a walk on a sunny October day.

This month I’ve decided to participate in an event called “October,” where for every day in October I’m going to experience a day in October.
Here’s the prompt list I’m using in case anyone wants to join me in this challenge:
Next month I’m thinking of trying out the “No November November” challenge, where I’ll refrain from experiencing November for the whole month of November.
XXXIII.
if you need me i am going to be binge-reading the archives of my favorite blog on the entire internet which is written by this sweet old man who lives on a farm in the pacific northwest with his husband and a bunch of animals. there are nice pictures of flowers and ducks and the tone is so gentle and soothing:
like… fuck…. i love everything about this blog…. it’s the one good thing left online

Silver and Muldoon playing in the water while the Walrus is anchored. The ship and characters from Black Sails.
I made a pencil and watercolour sketch of the Walrus about a year ago but it felt somehow… lacking and lifeless, so I let it be. A while ago I wanted to finally do something with it, so I scanned it and re-drew some parts and added the waves and characters etc. In the end this turned out a lot nicer than I imagined! Please, do not repost elsewhere :)

I think the concept of a true name is overrated. I think everyone should all have multiple names and switch between them at random. People should collect names the way we collect particularly nice mugs.
Also i dont know if you guys have ever seen medieval beekeeper garb, but:
Its the best!!!
Nope!
