trigger warnings: abandonment, abuse, domestic abuse, injury, trauma
PAST
Olympe Grant. It’s a strong name, after all the name is derived from the word Olympus. It’s the only thing her parents gave her before they abandoned her at a hospital when she was just a few months old. Or that’s what she was told by her case manager when she was old enough
One would think that due to growing up in the system, Olympe would quite easily slot in with a nice family. However, she seemed to draw the short straw when it came to families so she spent her childhood and teenage years bouncing around from one shitty home to the next. Some were worse than others. She won’t talk about any of them.
There was one home though. One that she loved yet it seemed as if the world wanted to take that away too and she was moved away after one specific incident at her then highschool. She doesn’t talk about them either. For different reasons though.
Her decision to apply for Harvard and subsequent acceptance (was a new beginning.. It was her chance to create a new self and step away from the easily thrown aside orphan she had grown up being. It was also here that she stopped keeping her sexuality to herself as there was no longer a disagreeable foster parent to lock her in a cupboard for daring to be different. Being openly gay in that time wasn’t easy and her thick skin was sorely tested. Friends weren’t really something she had at Harvard, her whole focus being solely and getting those top marks in every assessment that had. They could hate her, fine, but she was going to be the best. And she was. She started with a business and sociology double major with the intent to go into law school afterwards. Once again, she was valedictorian.
She had offers from everywhere but her heart was set on going back home to New York as a prosecutor. She wanted to show people that she became someone. So when an offer came from the District Attorney’s Office in New York, she took it without a second thought. By the age of thirty, she was one of the best prosecutors they had. She was known for her ruthlessness, for the way in which she tore strips into the defence. That was how, at the end of last year after the last District Attorney’s end of term, she was offered his role. And she took it. Of course there were those not in favour of having an openly gay, female, District Attorney. However, she’s used to people not liking her, she’s been dealing with it her whole life.
It was upon moving back home where she met the woman who would eventually become her wife. Evangeline. God, it felt like they were made for each other. After years together, they got married the year after gay marriage was made legal in America. In the eyes of many, they were a power couple. They were the lesbian couple that young LGBTQ+ could look up to feel seen. Unfortunately, that couldn’t be further from the truth. A year into their relationship, when Olympe had already fallen in love and gotten surprisingly attached to Evangeline, the power dynamic shifted. It started with small things. Little jabbing comments on how Olympe dressed or her long hours turned into arguments that consisted purely of Evangeline guilt tripping her wife. It might have been okay if this was where it stopped. However it wasn’t and soon the arguments turned physical and Olympe’s suits became not a tool to show power but a tool to hide weakness.
Their relationship continued like this for years without anyone knowing, without Olympe admitting to herself that Evangeline held no love for her. It didn’t matter what her wife did to her, she would find a way to explain it away to herself. For a long time, it worked. People might have wondered but she was stubborn and she was proud and so no one knew. However, things changed one night. A night that ended with Evangeline storming out and leaving her wife broken on the floor. The new housekeeper found her soon after, having left something at their houses and despite Olympe’s protests, she was sent to the hospital.
Two things came out of the hospital visit. One, a forced realisation that she could not continue in this relationship and expect to make it out alive and second, a shattered knee that would never quite work properly again. That was two months ago.
PRESENT
Due to an intense amount of convincing on Harry Vandernberg’s behalf, Olympe has left her wife. Evangeline happened to be away when she was discharged, probably believing that she didn’t have the guts to leave. But with Harry’s encouragement, she did and she found herself living in an apartment closer to her office. She was told by the doctor that she shouldn’t live alone but she chose to ignore that.
Just like she chose to ignore Harry’s request to press charges on Evangeline. Admitting to herself what their relationship had been was hard enough, let alone admitting it to anyone else. So as far as anyone, including the doctors who saw to her, all her injuries were sustained during a home invasion. Nothing public has been stated about Evangeline, not even when the woman returned home.
HEADCANONS
Olympe now requires the use of a cane to walk, something she is still struggling to adjust to.
Few people know about her childhood as she is incredibly good at dodging questions about it.
Has an intense love for red wine, always has. She likes absolutely nothing else though, so remember that if you’re planning on getting her a drink.
Rarely ever wears a black suit. Due to her firm belief that plain black suits are boring, she only ever wears them if specifically required. Red suits are her favourite. Banks is Evangeline’s last name, she took it when they got married.
Both due to Eva’s demand the fact that Olympe wished to have a last name she could actually attach herself too.
