Le BolƩro de Ravel au Palais Garnier, OpƩra national de Paris (2017) (x)
Part of me wants to shift the entirety of Magical Fantasy Adventure Land into the normal world instead of splitting it into a separate realm.
Part of me is still annoyed that this fucker still doesnāt have a proper title. Or at least something that sounds better as a place holder.
itās called Mafalia. thatās your worldās name. āMAH-FAR-lee-uhā.
That actually sounds really good as a world name. Iām curious to know where that came from?
itās the acronym.Ā āMagical Fantasy Adventure Landā-ia becomes MaFAL-ia: Mafalia.
i always find if you need a placeholder name for something, write it out and make up an acronym, adding and removing letters or vowels if need be.
for example:
āThe House Where Clio Fell in Love With Himā
āThe HouseWhereClioFellinLoveWithHimā
āTHoWeCliFiLWHā
āThrowecliFiLWHā
āThrowecliffiLWHā
āThrowecliffiLWHā
āThrowecliffeā
āThrawecliffeā
henceĀ āthe house where Clio fell in love with himā becomes āThrawecliffe Houseā. whatās aĀ āthrawā? i donāt know. is it on a cliff? maybe; thatās an authorās preogative.
suddenly the name of the house itself throws up new questions which an author in answering goes off down a rabbit hole of worldbuilding.
Holy fuck. That is absolutely amazing advice.
Thank you so much!!!!!
As someone who regularly smashes words together for humorous purposes, Iām appalled Iāve never thought to use it in my writing. Bless you.
good advice
My favourite example of this is Dragon Age. The setting is called Thedas, which comes from calling it āthe Dragon Age settingā in development! The Dragon Age Setting The DAS Thedas
āFairy tales ā the proper kind, those original Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen tales I recall from my Eastern European childhood, unsanitized by censorship and unsweetened by American retellings ā affirm what children intuitively know to be true but are gradually taught to forget, then to dread: that the terrible and the terrific spring from the same source, and that what grants life its beauty and magic is not the absence of terror and tumult but the grace and elegance with which we navigate the gauntlet.ā

āBefore the writers started working on the first season, I wrote a list of six things on the wall that every episode had to do.ā - Mike Schur (x)

A friend of mine with a passion for folklore and small presses recently introduced me to Inhabit Media, and Iām so glad to have had a chance to peruse these books.Ā
Inhabit Media is an Inuit-owned publishing company based inĀ Iqaluit, Nunavut (i.e. very very very North). They are dedicated to preserving and promoting the stories, knowledge, culture, and language of the Inuit and of Northern Canada, and they publish a range of books for children and adults that include contemporary and historical fiction, folklore and legends retold and beautifully illustrated, and non-fiction on history, science, and arctic life.Ā
If you enjoy folklore, oral history, wintertime storytelling, or really superbly creepy mermaids, definitely check them out.Ā

Writer Beware makes posts on which publishing houses to avoid at all costs, which words to look for and which words to watch out for in contracts, and several other things that will keep you in control and knowledgeable about the publishing process.Ā Iād suggest reading through the website if you want to avoid getting ripped off, cheated, or scammed.
Iām just going to reblog this every so often because itās a site that every writer needs to see.
