I’m posting this to warn people in North Carolina, Muslims and Jewish peeps (Muslims and Jews of colour especially), all people of colour  and queer people (lesbian, trans, gay, non binary, agender, asexual, all of you) to please be safe wherever you are on that date. If you do not feel safe, please stay at home or with friends. Do not attempt to engage them or incite them to violence for your and your friends and families safety, please. Do not give them a reason. 

If you want to organise a counter protest, that is fine too but please, always be safe. Organise the protest on secure channels where it is safer and away from potential fascist infiltration.

DAY 3

I was going to do a series of posts about my progress with NaNoWrimo but I got so caught up with writing and thinking that I forgot! 

So here are the stats so far.

Also, a word of advice to anyone who is worried about their word counts or catching up if they’re behind:

Don’t stress yourself out. 

You can do this! If you keep thinking about the words that you haven’t written yet, you’ll distract yourself from the words you can write!

Skip scenes.

Write what interests you.

Take a break and just chill out until the ideas flow.

Write down bits and pieces of ideas or scenes or character arcs until it becomes an idea.

But do NOT stress yourself out about what you haven’t done. Just open your mind to all the possibilities!

Arbitrarily taking a white male comic book character and making it a woman, or a different race is a cop out, not representation.

Representation would be to create a new Black/Female/Latino/Asian/Gay/Trans character and because you want to represent a community and address the growing demand for diversity in comic books.

Taking an already-established white male character and suddenly saying “this character is now a woman!” is a cop out because it requires no effort, no creativity, and often times the character’s personality simply boils down to the token minority and not much else, leaving a mediocre story at best. (Looking at you, female Thor.)

So no. I’m not into it. They can do better

writing tip for asian characters

hey i just have to say something - because i find it could be helpful(?)

so you know how we writers LOVE describing everything? especially the colour of so-and-so’s hair and so-and-so’s eyes. now, if you’re writing from the point of view of a caucasian/any other race that has a multitude of hair and eye colour combination and the character is looking at an asian character and so you’re describing the appearance of the asian character, just do whatever, do what you normally do. 

but

if you’re writing through the eyes of an asian character, and he/she’s meeting another person, don’t describe the colour of anything. instead focus on the length of your hair, complexion, shape of face, scars (unless the person has the most noticeable blue eyes or bright white hair or). 

(as an eastasian myself) this is because asians who have been surrounded by other asians don’t naturally take note of the colour of other’s hair, even if they have green eyes and blonde hair, we don’t take note. sometimes we have to consciously remind ourselves just to realize that “oh yeah you have brown eyes. weird. i didn’t notice before”. 

we’re surrounded by people who have more or less the same hair and eyes, so we look at different aspects of a person’s physical attributes, namely things like the length of their hair and their complexion (have i emphasized how much asians take note of skin tone and texture because omg we do)
