I think heated rivalry is making leaps and bounds for reintroducing the endangered straight woman fujoshi to the yaoi ecosystem. In recent years especially yaoi has become really a gay person’s game and straight woman fujo populations have dwindled largely due to overfishing and booktok so it’s really majestic seeing them return from the brink of extinction
Challengers was the important first step that re-introduced straight women to the concept that it’s awesome to watch men kiss. Heated rivalry showed them that a woman doesn’t even have to be there.
When I was a kid, like 6 or something, adults would talk about weddings and marriage in the way that made me think it was unavoidable thing that would happen to me whether I wanted it or not, so I used to console myself like "Oh don't worry, you only have to do that for a little bit and then you can get divorced and live alone forever". Incredibly funny early aro experience.
But also, it sounds like a sketch. Like imagine a scene with bunch of little girls imagining their dream wedding, but one of them is just sitting there daydreaming of divorce.

what I think of every time Murderbot goes off to “have an emotion in private”
I'm noticing some interesting choices with regards to pronouns in Laura Pohl's translation of All Systems Red. See, in Portuguese we don't have object pronouns like "it/its" and neutral neopronouns like "elu/delu" are considered more analogous to the English "they/them", so gendering Murderbot the way that it is gendered in the original was always going to be tricky. There's also the other difficulty that adjectives are gendered in Portuguese, so whenever Murderbot describes itself or it's emotional state or anything, necessarily it was going to gender itself grammatically in some way. What this translation does at first is that the Murderbot's internal dialogue it genders itself in the masculine which I assumed to be just sort of defaulting Murderbot to be a masculine character, but in reflection of a different detail, I think it's just defaulting to this formal almost archaic notion of the masculine as neutral. Now, the detail that made me rethink this is this line that I just came upon of Dr Mensah's:
"UniSeg, preciso que você fique parada aí até eu chegar."
[SecUnit, I need you to stay still (female form) until I arrive]
The reason that Mensah is referring to Murderbot in the feminine in this case is that it's referring to it as a security unit, right, and the word Unidade, Unit, in Portuguese, is a feminine word. So I just went back now and I found one other previous instance in which characters refer to Murderbot in the third person and, Ratthi, he calls Murderbot by masculine pronouns but that's when it's being referred to as a robô, robot, which in Portuguese is a masculine word. So I guess the way that Pohl found to express Murderbot's object pronouns is by just using whatever pronouns are in agreement with the word being used to describe it. Which to be fair makes a lot of sense for treating objects in Portuguese. If you call something a cadeira, chair, you're going to refer to it with feminine pronouns, but if you call the exact same object a sofá, sofa, you will be using the masculine pronouns.
okay I just realized the reason Murderbot refers to itself with masculine pronouns in its internal dialogue all the time is because it's referring to itself as a robô assasino, murderer robot, which is masculine okay this is kind of genius actually
okay okay this is so cool actually literally the next page and Murderbot is talking about other SecUnits right and it says this
"Elas não eram os robôs-assassinos mais astutos, (...)"
[They (feminine plural) weren't the (masculine plural) most astute murder robots, (...)]
...feminine pronouns for Unidades de Segurança, SecUnits, and masculine pronouns for robôs-assassinos, murder robots...
so yeah it's it's literally exactly as I understood it we are simply using our own grammatical gender rules for objects... it's so cool
hey, translator here! (: this was absolutely done on purpose. gendering Murderbot would always be a problem, so I, the copyeditors and the brazilian editors worked together to make sure that bots/constructs could be referred with both masculine/feminine pronouns, sometimes even in the same paragraph. same goes for ART in the second novella, who's also an It in english, but varies between nave (ship, femine) and transporte (transporte, masculine). it's an important detail and i'm happy it was noticed!

kinda upset by how many people are insisting that davrin's narrative is more about assan than davrin
it's really not
everything revolving around how davrin interacts with assan is also him talking to himself
which is a perspective problem that all of the companions have
they are all people who are too in their own heads to be able to resolve some of their deeper fundamental conflicts, because all of them are deeply lonely and alienated from their respective social environments, convinced in various ways that they cannot relate too others or be related too in turn, which is one of the things that makes them the perfect team to hunt down solas, who has the same problems writ large across the ages.
and in overcoming their issues and turning to rook and each other for external opinions while solas observes rook it demonstrates that other courses of action are possible and that there is value in trusting others with their loneliness and vulnerability but ANYWAY
davrin pretty clearly projects his feelings about his own upbringing onto assan, including the very
clearly present problems he has experienced as a dalish warden, if we let ourselves see them. he's not turning around to us and saying directly that he's been treated like shit by humans for most of his life in any run i've had so far. he also doesn't need too. he demonstrates it with the positions he holds.
how he advocates for not revealing the truth behind the origins of the elves, because it will make their lives harder than they already are.
how he tells assan that he needs to toughen up or he'll get chewed up by the world. that he's meant to be a hunter. that it's in his blood. it's what he's for.
how he changes his mind when he sees assan interact with the halla. how it clearly reminds him, along with his reconnection with endrin, that he was once a little boy who sang to halla. that he is more than violence, more than the hunt, more than a living weapon meant to be used once and then disposed of.
i've barely touched on his romance at all in my current run but like. please. even without it, just from my first run:
davrin is so clearly afraid of abandonment, of rejection. of letting his guard down and letting people in because it might compromise his dedication to his chosen path - *as are they all, in different ways, which is on purpose* - that he is trying to raise assan to protect him from davrin's own pain.
which doesn't work! that doesn't work.
davrin looks at assan and names him arrow. davrin looks at himself and calls himself a weapon. davrin doesn't let himself return to his clan because he anticipates their rejection. because he already didn't fit in with them to start with. davrin never gives us his last name.
the unity between warden and griffon comes when davrin stops just projecting his own pain and fears onto assan, and learns how to work with assan as he is. In doing so, it makes him realize he can be more than a weapon. That there's an option for him beyond sacrifice and vigilance. That he can find peace. it is a reconciliation of disparate aspects of his Self, which is another recurring narrative thread in the game.
Davrin doesn't have to completely disconnect from his people. He doesn't have to himself separate and away from everyone, protecting them from what he perceives as his inevitable end, or from harming them. Assan can just be Assan, and Davrin can just be Davrin, and they love each other.
he reconciles himself with his complex feelings around his clan, finds value in the lessons they taught him that he chafed against as a younger man. he reconciles himself with the complex history of the wardens, and looks for a different future with them too.
assan is bright and vibrant and alive and new and, to borrow davrin's word, "pure". He can be anything. He reminds Davrin that he can be anything, too. Assan is a catalyst, he's not the actual focus. He is the catalyst for realizations in every scene we see him in in Davrin's personal quests, which are always actually about Davrin.

I saved the best for last. This is my favorite one of the bunch. Oh Spite. What a guy.
Between Spite's interest in fire, his fascination with Rook, and I'm suspecting some lingering jealousy for Lucanis winning Rook's heart, of course he's going to demand to cook for them.
