________
You will be remembered as a hero. ________
For those wondering about the fox. Grace has a subtle motif with this animal throughout the movie, but especially this shot where they pack this toy fox with his belongings on the Hail Mary. The pose of it looked a little haunting to me, thus prompting this illustration. __________ (Small/large prints are also available on my etsy â¤ď¸)

Modern Anne of Green Gables AU where Anne has always desperately wanted a pair of pre-ripped jeans.
I now have the delightful image of Mrs Rachel with a pair of scissors knowing full well that she is about to Annoy The Crap Out Of Marilla but damn if she isnât going to get Anne the most stylish and fashionable pair of jeans Ever.
Imagine her at a mall, anxiously asking a sales clerk, âWhatâs the raddest pair of jeans you have? Iâm shopping for a 14-year-old girl, and she wants to look very cool.â
I am a FOOL. @mihrsuri suggested âA pair of Converse sneakers or Doc Martensâ and âbeing able to paint her own room a wild colourâ
Which are WAY more in character for a modern foster kid whoâd be able to rip her own jeans if she really wanted, but might not have much experience with costlier brands or being able to spend money changing her room in a permanent way that landlords might not allow.
Those are WAY better interpretations.Â
I love this and would read it, but I canât figure out how the premise works in the present day. In the original, Marilla and Mathew send away for an orphan boy (stipulating white, Anglophone, Canadian-born, old enough to be useful right away) to use as a farm labourer in return for food, board, and schooling, and due to a mix-up are met with a girl instead. In this AU, they apply to be foster parents becauseâŚ?
Re painting her room: would this be modeled on the hair dye saga, or the Avonlea Improvement Society and the blue shed? I vote the shed, both so she can still fuck up her hair with a home dye job as in canon and so she can order a tasteful pale spring green accent wall as approved by Marilla, then due to a mix-up at the paint shop, end up with BRIGHT ELECTRIC BLUE.
Iâm modeling painting her room on the puffed sleeves, actually: Something frivolous she desperately wants, that Matthew and Rachel make happen for her, causing extreme bliss.
Iâve thought about this a lot and you do have to change some of the really basic dynamics a little. Orphans like Anne in late 19th century Canada were basically indentured labourers; you have to change it up.
Also, Iâm reaching deep into my childrenâs lit study of AOGG. You see, the underlying dynamic of AOGG is that Matthew, Marilla, and Avonlea think they know what virtue, morality, and Christianity are all about. They have very specific ways of doing things and very established notions of what a good, respectable person looks like.
Anne is, on the surface, not at all a good or respectable person. Sheâs a hoyden. But she does value virtue. At the beginning she tells Matthew sheâs considering whether she should want to be âdivinely beautiful or dazzlingly clever or angelically good â
But by the end of the book, she proves that she is already inherently all threeâher beauty is compared to a woodland deity; sheâs the top of her class; and she has a spirit of love and kindness that so radically breaks Avonlea conceptions that she also turns the people around her into better, kinder people as well.
Matthew and Marilla would sign up to be foster parents because their church is encouraging people to foster children in care and sponsor refugee families and things like that. Theyâre kind of staid white liberals in middle age who want to do the right thing, like making sandwiches for the homeless on Thursdays in the church basement. But they care more about appearing correct than breaking out of their shells.
And they were expecting a child. Their concept of fostering and adoption is still kind of old; they were both adopted as infants by their parents, so they think a foster child coming to your home is going to be, if not in a crib, still at the blocks and Sesame Street age. They bought a little bed. Maybe theyâd already fostered a little kid or two.
But then their caseworker calls them up and tells them about Anne, and whomp, theyâve got a trans preadolescent.
And Anne has a ton of psychiatric diagnoses and a regiment of meds, and you could see her as a walking behavioural disaster even after sheâs taken her Ritalin, but sheâs also so friendly and so kind, and sheâs the one making fast friends with the eldest girl of the Syrian family the church has sponsored into the neighbourhood, sheâs talking to and getting to know the homeless, sheâs trying to save the whales and navigate the complicated ethics of the seal hunt and sometimes she lies awake at night crying about wild bee populations and gay men in Chechnya.
So Matthew and Marilla have to slowly come around to thinking: We can try to squash all the abnormal out of this girl and make her as âfunctionalâ as possible, or we can accept that sheâs going to be a wild anarchic SJW goblin, and help her be the best one she can. Which also spills over into academics: They have to push the local school to accommodate the way she learns, because when sheâs accommodated sheâs so smart, but stuck without supports in an ordinary classroom, sheâs a living nightmare and getting suspended all the time.
They theoretically know that itâs good to be good to people and you should work to make the world better, but Anne really challenges them to decide between comfort and normalcy, or supporting their queer trans neurodivergent activist girlchild as much as they can.
This last bit lost me as soon as they started throwing every mental issue into the bucket just because they could.
Throwing that much âbad stuffâ into the character would make it nearly impossible to do anything with that character. Pick one or two issues. Run with those like mad, but choose: the mind is not a clown car! You donât stuff it to the brim with mental disorders and hope for the best. Doesnât work that way.
LMAOWTFBBQ
Iâm a mental health therapist and Iâve worked as a caregiver in foster homes. Iâm literally basing this Anne on my friends, people I know, the kids Iâve cared for in foster homes, and kids Iâve worked with as a therapist.
(âHow dare you put Anne Shirley on Ritalin!â Iâm not saying I think she ought to be, though Iâm not saying she shouldnât be either, but in 21st century Canada, in the foster system? Sheâd be on Ritalin.)
Stressful early childhood experiences, like lack of a stable parental figure, leaves kids hugely at risk of mental illnesses and learning disabilities. Dealing with transphobia all the time also puts someone at serious risk of mental illness and trauma. Itâs not a clown car, itâs a spiral of risk factors that need to be dealt with through loving, stable care and creative problemsolving.
And oh boy are you wrong if you think neurodivergent, learning disabled, mentally ill children cannot be fucking amazing people with incredible lives ahead of them.

ââI feel ill,â he announced. âIâm going to bed, where I may die.ââ
âIt seems as if those of high ability cannot resist some extra, dangerous stroke of cleverness, which results in a fatal flaw and begins a slow decline to evil.â
ââIs that all you can do in the face of tragedy?â Howl asked. âMake toast!ââ
ââDear Sophie,â he said. âAlways busy. You were hard at work yesterday, werenât you, in spite of my advice? Why have you made a jigsaw puzzle of my best suit? Just a friendly inquiry, you know.ââ
âHowlâs voice was presently heard shouting weakly, âHelp me, someone! Iâm dying from neglect up here!ââ
ââDear Sophie, do please tell me how you bully a fire demon into being that obliging. Iâd dearly love to know!ââ
ââLook. Survey. Inspect. My hair is ruined! I look like a pan of bacon and eggs!ââ
ââAunts are terrible. They go for you with hat pins.ââ
ââYes, letâs admit it,â she told the skull. âI snoop.ââ
ââYou must admit I have a right to live in a pigsty if I want.ââ
ââIâm dying of boredom,â Howl said pathetically. âOr maybe just dying.ââ
