obsessed with ilya not knowing what autism is really (he didn’t exactly read the dsm5 while learning english) but he does know shane prefers lamps over the big light and making noise before 8am is a death sentence and sometimes shane can’t talk when he’s upset so ilya turns on an old hockey match and lets shane calm down alone while he’s in the other room and after games against montreal he lays on top of shane on the floor and presses his whole weight down and shane just kinda floats a little
Ilya coming home to Shane being overstimulated and agitated and he thinks it's best to leave him alone mostly so he goes off and does his own thing and eventually ends up on the couch playing a video game and Shane comes out of nowhere, noise canceling headphones on and hobby of the day in hand (book, knitting, switch, coloring, could be basically anything) and sits next to him which Ilya thinks is really sweet and then Shane very softly asks "are you avoiding me because I'm being weird and quiet again" and Ilya sees his whole life flash before his eyes, every mistake he's ever made, mostly this specific one, and rapidly starts explaining himself and Shane ultimately finds it sweet just nods and stays were he is, doing his thing now with a little smile on his face
you know and i know that after hollanov gets outed, every hockey player who is not a raging homophobe has a quiet night, thinking about the squalor they used to spew on the ice: calling everyone a cocksucker, gay, f**got, fairy and whatever else they could come up with. just being homophobic af, not bc they have big feelings against gay people, but bc thats the usual insult in the league.
so they have a quiet night reflecting on their behaviour, and all of them come to the conclusion that they have to ask for forgiveness and say sorry. but bc they are hickey players, they are not thinking, oh i should post something on socials or say something in an interview. no, "i should say sorry to hollander. if the patron saint of hockey is gay, then its an okay thing to be actually".
so for the first few people, shane and ilya are like, tf? why are you saying sorry to us? (shane, probs: why are u apologising only to me and not my husband also?) so they are like this the whole time, but shane is a cutiepie, so he tells him that he personally forgives, but maybe he caused some damage to others so he cannot say thisnin their name also. he cannot absolv him of all of his sins.
and then it keeps happening! after a while, ilya accepts it like, yeah. he is hickey jesus, he wont die for ur sins, but he forgives u. chop chop we have places to do, things to be.
ofc after a while shane kinda puts it together and his media training kicks in and he is like, yes, confess your sins and ill say it wasnt okay, but be better. i dont want to be gay jesus, please lets get this over with quickly. see my huge smile? it means i forgive. go away.
ilya is still a bit amused.
and then by the 100th confession, shane is like yes. im a nobody to you but i forgive you anyway. totally normal thing to do. this is kinda funny for the 100th time. for your forgiveness you have to do bagskates before your next ten practices, amd suicides after. now run along and leave me and my husband alone.
ilya is just done with this. they find them everywhere. its not even funny anymore.
There’s a certain scene in The Long Game that I would have loved an expansion of, so I decided to write one.
It’s the moment towards the end where the Centaurs are knocked out of the playoffs and Ilya comes home, greets Anya, and breaks down in Shane’s arms. Eventually, Shane takes him to bed, but I like to think they had a small conversation before he does.
Ilya was sobbing in Shane’s neck, clutching him desperately as he gasped out apologies that Shane kept shushing. The longer they stood together, the more Ilya’s knees felt weakened and he sagged his weight into Shane more and more.
It reached a point where Shane started tugging him down gently. “Sit, right down here,” Shane murmured in his ear, Ilya barely able to hear over his own crying.
But Ilya obeyed, leaving them sitting in the middle of the floor together with Ilya practically in Shane’s lap. They held each other fiercely, and Ilya was loosely aware of Anya’s excitement at them being level with her, her panting breaths ghosting over his arm.
Ilya wasn’t sure how long he cried until he started to slow, coming back into himself more every second. Shane was rubbing his arms soothingly up and down Ilya’s back, face pressed into the hair at the top of Ilya’s head. Ilya tried to squirm closer into Shane’s grip, feeling in real time the trembling in his body lessening. Exhausted, Ilya turned his head toward Anya, keeping his forehead against Shane’s neck.
She leaned into their space and Shane scoffed quietly in amusement, her big searching eyes locked on Ilya with her nose twitching in rapid sniffs. Slowly, Ilya reached a hand out and scratched at her head, which she pressed into. Ilya smiled weakly at her, letting his hand drop.
“Sorry,” Ilya said again, voice layered in congestion.
“Please don’t be,” Shane said back. “I get it. It’s been a rough season.”
That was an understatement. Regretfully, Ilya lifted his head to look Shane in the eyes. They only held contact for a moment before Ilya felt embarrassed about how he must look, and flicked his gaze down. “It’s not because I lost.”
“I know.”
“We got farther than I ever thought possible, I’m happy we made it as far as we did.”
“I know.”
Ilya sniffed, gnawing at his lip. He didn’t have the words. In English, or in Russian. It was just all so much and so complicated, he didn’t know where to begin.
“This is just… a release, I think,” Shane began. “After everything that’s been happening, and all the stress. You’re letting it all go. Which is good,” he assured, dipping his head to force Ilya to meet his eyes again.
“It’s been stressful for you, too.” Ilya found himself saying.
“It’s not a competition.”
Ilya raised a brow, which caused Shane to roll his eyes. “Okay, I know most things between us is a competition, but this isn’t one of them.” Shane sighed and adjusted, somehow pulling Ilya even closer. “I wanna say some things. Will you listen?”
A small pit of dread formed in Ilya’s chest, but he pushed it down and nodded.
“This season is over now. Done. And you know what happens next?”
“What?”
Shane smiled, and his voice turned reverent. “We’re gonna get married. And then we’re gonna have the most beautiful honeymoon, and then I’m going to play for Ottawa, and then we’re gonna win the cup together —“
Ilya laughed wetly.
“— and we’re going to create a fucking dynasty. And once we do, we’re gonna have kids, and more dogs, and it’s going to be the most amazing family. We are going to build a life together. And it all starts right now. Right here. With me and you. Alright?”
Ilya didn’t know how to respond to that, to the surety in Shane’s expression. Shane quickly became blurry, tears threatening to spill over again. Shane tilted his head in affection and cupped Ilya’s cheek. His next words were much softer, Ilya could barely hear him. “You are… the most beautiful thing I have ever seen.”
Ilya huffed out a breath. “I’m a mess right now.”
“A blushing mess.”
“Mm, no. I don’t blush.”
“Sure you don’t.” Shane chuckled, rumbling deep from his chest. He leaned forward, pressing his forehead to Ilya’s. “Why don’t I take you to bed?”
“Okay. But you’ll have to help me up.”
And then we can continue to their canon conversation in bed where Ilya finally tells Shane in more depth about his depression. Thanks for coming to my ted talk.

AU where Shane and Ilya don't hook up or have a decades-long secret. They don't really know each other at all, except to play each other.
Shane comes out of the closet sometime after Scott does, and in some random, lighthearted interview, they ask him what he's looking for in a man. And Shane's just, off-hand like, "Well, he'd have to have at least one Stanley Cup. Obviously." And when he gets a good reaction from that, he keeps going, like "Needs to be amazing at hockey. Definitely needs to be at least an All-Star, if not a captain. Hot too. If he can't bench-press me, I'm not interested."
And it's all in fun, except two days after the interview prints, Ilya Rozanov shows up at his door like "knock, knock. I am here to apply for boyfriend position. Do you need resume? I brought my Stanley Cup ring, just in case."

gurl what kind of rivalry is this?
I want you all to imagine with me, if you will, what I witnessed today.
McDonalds parking lot. teenage boy. giant polished white ford Tundra. windows down. blasting. I mean BLASTING. Beethoven's moonlight sonata. boy demolishing burger.

I enjoy the sex in heated rivalry but it's not the main selling point for me which is unfortunately impossible to explain to people who haven't seen the show in a way that doesn't sound like a joke
"what do you like about the sexy gay hockey show based on a romance porn book with lots of sex?"
"oh well I think the plot and the characters are really great!"
I'm being serious but it gets a laugh every time
“Yeah, he calls me Huddy, Papi, Bubba, Baby. I call him Pookie. I used to call him Pookie a lot. Papi. Oh, Con Con. I call him that both in text form and verbally. But yeah, a lot of nicknames.” — Hudson Williams talking about his friendship with Connor Storrie for Timid Magazine (2025)
im fucking crying
I miss when ads were a single click and then they’re gone. Now every ad has a minimum of three phases where you watch a video, exit the still frame of fake gameplay, and then exit the app download. That doesn’t even touch on the ones that forcibly take you to another app after opening a tab in safari without you ever touching the screen.
I hate advertising. I hate that you can’t do anything without companies jumping down your throat with mostly bullshit ads. I hate that billboards exist. I hate that every company unanimously decided to make their ads longer and longer. I hate that ad blockers try to charge you money and there are in app purchases to remove ads. I hate that my attention has become commodified. I hate that there’s nothing I can do about it.
