French Movies/TV shows for learning

So heres some resources for better comphrension. I’m gonna start with my personal favorites then lead to what I have queued up and finally just recommended shows.

My Favorites~

Les Grandes Grandes Vacances  (The long long vacation) - a kids show about growing during WWII. It was pretty good, kind of sad though. It was on netflix with subtitles but I can’t find it anymore. I recognized the difference in what French people saw as fit for children vs what Americans would so I got a good cultural immersion(?) experience from it as well. 

Il y a tes yeux (He even has your eyes) - A cute story about a black couple who adopt a white baby and everyone freaks out about it. Available on netflix with subtitles. 

The African Doctor -Happily escaping a dictatorship, a Congolese doctor transplants his family to a small French village, where culture shock sets in for everyone. Its pretty funny with some serious notes.

Monsieur Lazhar - An 11-year-old pupil discovers that one of the school teachers has just committed suicide. Bachir Lazhar arrives at the school to fill the tragic void and help the children cope with their loss. Very heartwarming but I found it a bit hard to understand at my french level at the time. Subtitles are must if your comprehension isn’t that good.

Recommendations - I haven’t watched these yet but they seem pretty good. 

10 Jours en Or (Ten days in Gold) - When a carefree bachelor is unexpectedly left in charge of a young boy, the two embark on a road trip that will change both of their lives

Welcome to the Family -  In Catalonia, single mom Àngela tries to support her family by covering up her estranged father's death with the help of his widow.

Le Petit Prince (The little Prince) - This is the story of a grown-up meeting his inner child, embodied by a Little Prince. Traveling from an asteroid, he left his rose there to discover the world.

on just the legalize weed point there was just a debrief of asking a colorado rep how legalizing weed has gone - arrests for weed have, obviously, dropped off heavily -because of this the police spend their time addressing actual concerns -because of this the prisons are not overcrowded -because of this people who would otherwise have had been thrown in jail, been out of the economy for years, and then unable to effectively enter the workforce can instead be making wages at better jobs and paying taxes -because of this theres been a severe dropoff of troubled kids produced by a system that removes, for reasons we can all guess, disproportionately young men of color that are their fathers, and thus crime rates are much more minor -money from the new marijuana taxes have been first put towards funding the schools, which had lead to some serious public school improvements -the rest of the money largely goes to social programs, community centers, and other public works that benefit the areas it was collected from -overall people in the areas with legalized weed have lower poverty, higher rates of home ownership, better education levels, and more accumulated wealth call me crazy but it seems to me the only people not benefiting are those who rely on prison labor, and to them i say they can pick up a tool themselves and work instead of perpetuating modern day slave labor

Witches to be Wary of.

So I understand that a lot of posts on here are about finding community and comfort in other witches, so I wanted to touch briefly on a subject that can get a little dicey: how to tell you need to avoid a practitioner.

There are a lot of people out there who generally don't give a shit about others, which is sad, but true. This is, unfortunately, especially true when it comes to religion and witchcraft. So here are a few red flags to watch out for if you're a witch, and wondering if you should be around another.

They constantly talk badly about other practices (especially closed practices).

They look down on other witches writing things down, because they believe 'real witches memorize everything'.

When the topic of things like divination, tarot, or astral projecting come up, they dominate the conversation and make up grandiose stories about their experiences. One or two crazy stories is much different than 'Hera told me to stop sleeping with her husband while shifting'.

They pretend to always 100% know exactly what your tarot cards are telling you.

They frequently fuss with your altar, tarot cards, crystals, etc without asking, disrupting their energy.

When the topic of religion comes up, they rant about how the only good/real religion is Paganism/Wicca/New Age/etc

If they refuse to do their own research.

If they dabble in closed practices without the proper birthright/invitation, then get mad when you tell them it's inappropriate.

If they tease baby and new witches for messing up, because they're still learning.

They think that every witch HAS to be religious.

If they suggest that the only "proper" witchcraft is their own style and/or if they consistently tell you you're wrong for using a specific crystal/candle/herb when you're actually using it properly.

There are lots of good people out there with the best intentions. Friends can be made in every direction, but remember that you are your first priority. If someone is making you feel small, belittled, or uncomfortable, you have the right to walk away from that person if you are able to. You are your own person and you have your own practice. Be safe, and don't let those who want to drag you down do just that.

Write your Witchcraft

The thing is, we change. We are not the same person we were five years ago. Hel, a lot of us are not even the same people we were last week. We change, and our beliefs, favourites, thoughts and the way we see ourselves changes with it. 

The same is true for our witchraft, religion and spiritual beliefs. This is why I have a list of question that I like to answer for myself every couple of years. I first started this when I came across a list of questions by Juniper from Walking the Hedge (site no longer in use) in 2008, yes, over ten years ago. Every few years I filled in the questions and looked back at the answers I gave before. Some never changed, some changed quite a lot. 

When our coven started a new lesson plan, I gave out the list of questions as well. We sealed our answers in envelopes and plan to fill them in again, once we finish our lessons. Then open the envelopes and look at the answers side by side. To see how we have changed. 

I looked at the list last week and found it actually lacking a bit. The questions were very deity- and spiritual based, so I was missing some more questions about my personality and witchcraft. So I decided to make my own list of questions! 

Since I wanted to make this more a weekly journaling/grimoire prompt for myself I put together 52 questions. These can be answered weekly (maybe every year) or you can work through the list in one go and repeat that every few years or so. 

Some notes on the wording: I consider myself both a witch and a pagan, but to keep it easier to read I only used wording like “witch” and “witchcraft”, they can however be substituted for “pagan”, “paganism” or even “my path”, should that fit you better. When I talk about “sacred space” this can both mean a ritual space like a temple or casting of a circle, but also just your home or outdoors witchy environment.
