Truly I cannot take people who complain about how Azula stans 'treat Azula' because they bring it up in the most unrelated moments just to discredit you for no reason 😭😭 all this complaining I've yet to ever see an example of this nebulous Azula stan talking about how everything Azula did was awesome and great and that she was judt the perfect moral princess for the whole show

I've never seen it. What I have seen is people taking my literal words out of context or actually altering screenshots to make it appear I was saying something I never said. (Discord and Facebook, for the most part. Facebook was really bad for the latter.) From personal experience, I think it’s mostly projection. Somebody will make a post saying “Zuko was always good because he did abc and Azula is irredeemable because she did xyz.” You’ll respond with a time Zuko did xyz and Azula did abc and they’ll block you then make a separate post saying you are arguing that Azula doing xyz was a good thing. They operate on the basis of “my favorite character can do no wrong” and so anything you say must be coming from that same perspective.

I’ve also noticed a seemingly recent phenomenon (perhaps driven by people using AI for research for their arguments?) where people will claim she did something that she absolutely did not do, like trying to smother Izumi in her crib, or threatening to kill Tom-Tom to get Mai to join in Omashu, and when you say “that didn’t happen” or ask for proof they say you’re whitewashing the character.

Idk if this is a hot take or not so let's call it a lukewarm take.

I think Iroh and Azula were the people Zuko loved most in his family. I don't think Ursa makes that list (probably top 3 tho) bcs I feel like Zuko likes the idea of his mother more than his actual one. He has this idealised version of her in his head whom he loves but I think the real Ursa is much different (I'm not considering the comics here so basically just show material)

Think about it, everytime Zuko feels stuck, he wonders what Iroh and Azula would do. His hallucination dragon dream (a weird one but evidence nonetheless), the southern air temple, etc. Even in the beach, his two happiest memories are one wirh Iroh & Lu Ten and one with Azula. They did have good times before (as told by Zuko himself somewhere tho I'm not sure where)

Now is that love very, very dysfunctional and skewed? Yes. There's many instances where he treats Iroh like shit and Azula like shit despite what they've each done for him. Ofc they don't always treat him great either but thats bcs the fire family is very dysfunctional from generational abuse (this is more Azula than Iroh bcs obviously shes a child and a victim currently. Iroh has his iffy instances but I believe hes a good uncle to Zuko atleast)

Zuko pushes away people he loves very often and with his family I feel like he thinks there's some sort of strings attached. I think he also idolized both iroh and Azula in a weird way and turned them into ideas with Iroh as "good" and Azula as "bad" when it is obviously more nuanced. But he definitely admired Iroh and very clearly admired Azula despite the negativity that made him feel and experience.

The point still stands though that on first instinct, he thinks of Iroh and Azula first. Yes he's severely demonised Azula in his head and that's not a good thing but indifference is the real opposing force to love I feel. In the beach when they were free from any outside influences, their relationship was pretty decent (not perfect but decent yknow) and in Ba Sing Se once Zuko could leave the influence of the fire nation, he became far nicer to Iroh.

Hence, I believe that Iroh and Azula were genuinely his closest family members. The love was toxic and very dysfunctional (again not talking sbout thr comics gang) but it WAS there. Which is why I maintain my point Zuko should've never become firelord at rhe end of the series. His "destiny" to become Firelord (pushed by Iroh of all people) was bullshit. He was 17, he should've just had the title and gone to therapy and lived a little before taking the entire responsibility at once. Anyway, that's a discussion for another day.

I think it has more to do with Iroh and Azula being the most present. I mean, it’s definitely that for the sake of the audience, but in-universe too, Zuko doesn’t know his dad well-enough to ask WWOD and Ursa has obviously been gone for a long time.

Azula felt unloved by her mother not because Ursa didn't love her, but because Ozai fed her a deeply unhealthy version of 'love' as a highly competetive, zero-sum game in which literally any degree of criticism or scolding must indicate general negative/unloving feelings towards the person being scolded.

Azula's feelings, particularly the ones she expresses in the beach episode, aren't an indication that Ursa didn't love Azula. They are an indication that Azula struggles to identify healthy expressions of parental love.

Cool opinion. What’s it based on?

The flashbacks in the show give us a clear contrast in how Ursa deals with bad behavior from her children when Zuko throws the loaf of bread at the turtleducks. We see that Zuko is affectionately taught not to do that. When Azula misbehaves, she’s met with harsh reprimand and no effort by Ursa to explain what she did wrong.

This isn’t to say that Ursa didn’t care about Azula, but her character bio did directly state her favoritism for Zuko. Yes, Ozai did a number on both those kids, and no, Azula’s interpretation of her mother is probably not correct, but the show 100% supports that Azula’s feelings come from a genuine discrepancy in how Ursa treated her children and divided her attention between them.

Something I haven’t seen discussed before is whether Toph can metalbend Mai’s knives. We don’t have a canon example, but I don’t see why she couldn’t. At best (for the Dangerous Ladies), that virtually neutralizes Mai. At worst, it provides Toph with some sharp projectiles she can fling around the battlefield to disrupt Azula and Ty Lee. Probably a game-changer.

Most of Toph's metalbending is stuff she's in physical contact with or at the least has very close proximity to. I don't think she's remotely masted it well enough to bend a projectile coming at her by the end of Book 2.

Toph shouldn’t be able to bend anything unless she has physical contact with it, and given that the canon explanation of metalbending is that she could feel the microscopic imperfections in which Earth remained in the metal, nobody should be able to bend metal without physical contact.

With how acrobatic the Dangerous Ladies are, Toph *should* be poorly matched against them, though to a lesser extent in the case of Mai. And given that Mai typically aims to (literally) pin people down, Toph could theoretically use her knives against her, just not while they’re in flight.

I think what people often forget about Azula is that she's supposed to be extremely charismatic. She's not only good at tricking and manipulating people but also at inspiring them and inspiring, in particular, to do what she wants. Mai and Ty Lee are people who have known her so long and so well that she's not so intoxicating to them anymore, but most people haven't. If there's a way to talk someone into doing what she wants done, Azula can do it.

And one thing to be aware of is that Mai, Ty Lee, and Zuko might mostly be immune to Azula's charisma, but our protagonists aren't. If one or more of them first encounter Azula in a situation where there isn't immediate violence/hostility and there isn't an obvious contradiction between Azula's goals and theirs, it's pretty easy to imagine them getting intoxicated with her and ending up tagging along with her.

Like, for instance, if Katara was lost at sea/presumed dead somehow at the very beginning of Book 2 and Azula's ship ended up picking her up on the way to Zuko and Iroh's resort, it's possible imagine that Katara might end up tagging along with Azula for a while. After all, Zuko and Iroh are Katara's enemies too.

...That's actually a very interesting canon divergence I've never seen! I think Katara is weary and certainly the crew don't treat her well, but Azula seems to treat her well enough. And that's all it takes for the door to open to Katara waiting next to Azula for Iroh and Zuko to walk into that spa door.

Azula is sometimes a jerk to people just to be a jerk, but in this case she views Katara are a shipwrecked mariner who needs help and as a someone Azula is intensely curious about, and that causes Azula to be pretty pleasant and kind to Katara. It's one of the cases where Azula feels like you catch more flies with honey than vinegar. And eventually Azula starts seeing Katara as someone who is useful to her, and that reinforces the incentive of Azula to be kind to her. Eventually Azula might start entertaining notions of, long term, making Katara the governor of one of the conquered water tribes.

Eventually Azula finds out about Katara's waterbending, hence the "useful" thing I mentioned above, but Azula still doesn't really know who she really is or that she's a companion of Aang. The Fire Nation reports about the Avatar basically never mentioned Katara, because fundamentally Fire Nation troops/sailors don't really care about some random teenage girl nor really think she's a threat

As for Katara, she gets to score some free transport around the Earth Kingdom which maybe takes her closer to Aang and if Azula wants to take out Zuko and Iroh, who have consistently been massive threats to Team Avatar, it's no skin off Katara's nose to help her. Also, Katara is kind of "addicted" to Azula.

Of course, eventually the truth comes out and Katara ends up rejoining Team Avatar (who has maybe had Pakku with them since they don't have Katara to teach Aang), but the long term repercussions might be significant.

Oh yeah! Imagine if team avatar loses Yue THEN they think Katara was lost and dead at sea...they'll be grief stricken messes. Azula being a little mean is also part of her charm? Because in front of Katara she's mean to the right targets to earn the right reaction from her. And Katara I think is aware of it and finds it magnetic. Also, Mai and Ty Lee are going to be SO interested with this new companion.

Yeah, I very much think Katara could enjoy watching Azula be mean to people who "deserve it." There's a vindictive streak to Katara's personality. Also, Azula probably figures out that Zuko has managed to really piss off Katara somehow early on and plays on that.

Ty Lee would probably be a bit jealous, as Katara has apparently gained Azula's favor and attention without "earning it" by being Azula's friend since forever, while Mai will probably be bit more accepting, since she feels more secure about everything. Both probably respect and appreciate fighting ability a lot, though, and that would help Katara's case with them.

You know since Katara here is only recently really found her true offensive bending, it might for a while look like Azula just has a personal waterbender fighting with her to the wider world and no one would connect her to the water tribe girl traveling with the avatar? Even to the gaang until they meet up again.

Katara is evidently wary and insecure and nervous the whole time but that doesn't cause Azula (or Mai, or Ty Lee) to become suspicious because that's precisely how they think some random, "ordinary" Southern Water Tribe girl from middle of nowhere would act if she she ended up being suddenly entangled in the war, the affairs of nobility, and their own lives.

Also, Katara being pissed at Zuko doesn't make Azula suspect anything, since she kind of expects her brother would manage to really piss off a lot of random people wherever he went.

Honestly, this wasn't supposed to be an Azutara premise, but it would work wonderfully as one.

This is one instance in which I don’t really agree with your premise at all. It’s true that Azula excels as a princess and commander, but this brand of charisma would not appeal to Katara. The type of people who get sucked in by Azula’s personality are the Dai Li, but Katara is about as far removed from the Dai Li as you can be. Katara is too idealistic to find a princess magical, and she’s naturally going to find anyone with authority over the Fire Nation military at least somewhat repulsive.

Socially, Azula is weird. I think Ty Lee finds it mostly endearing and Mai finds it generally entertaining, and perhaps Katara would fall somewhere in that spectrum as well, but I don’t think she would be intoxicated as you say.

Katara’s intelligence is often underrated because she happens to be more reactive like Zuko, but she’s actually quite smart in a well-rounded way. She’s strategic, improvisational, and emotionally intelligent. I could see them being curious about each other, perhaps in different ways, with Katara being particularly interested in uncovering Azula’s humanity from the glimpses she’s seen beyond the mask, but I think she’d hate Azula’s charisma.
