Fatphobia is out of damn control. Also ableism
Okay, so I’m going to start this off by saying that I’m thin. More so than what’s probably healthy. So I will never personally experience fatphobia myself, but hear me out on this one.
I was at work as a cashier yesterday, and a lady came up to the till and asked me about some chocolate bars we have sitting there. Without thinking I said something along the lines of “Oh, I can’t eat chocolate, so I couldn’t tell ya. But this one is our best seller!”
Most of the time when I say something like that, customers don’t get too nosey. Probably just assume lactose intolerance or something.
She asked why. I didn’t have a line and I don’t really mind telling people about my chronic illness. Told her that I have Wilson’s disease and that I have a restricted diet because of it, and chocolate is one of the things I can’t eat.
So she asked follow-up questions. What exactly is WD? How old was I when I was diagnosed? The usual.
And, of course, “What happens if you eat chocolate?”
My reply; “Well, it’s a fatal disease. I’m not about to find out.”
“Well at least it’s keeping you nice and slender!”
Are you fucking kidding me?
I just told this bitch I am DYING and all she can think to say is that at least I’m thin?
Girl, I’m thin because I can’t eat foods rich in protein needed to grow. I’m thin because my medication causes such extreme nausea that I can’t always force myself to eat. I’m not thin, I’m malnourished!
How the fuck is that better than being fat!?
How fucked are your priorities that you would just… say that to an ill person?
