❝NIGHTS AT WONDER VILLE ❞ ⎯ PROLOGUE: THE JOB OFFER
Penny goes into the rollercoaster kart, just like the fortune-teller said, they all decided to ride the Cyclone, one of the few good rides in the fair, perfect for anyone who was a thrill-seeker, it was her first time in a rollercoaster... and in a fair in general.
Everyone was in their places, and quickly enough, the ride started, Penny could hear their excited and happy screams, the ride going up and down, round and round, Penny holding her doll, she was enjoying this, nothing could ruin this.
Until she noticed, Ocean's happy screams becoming of pure horror, a crack sound, and all Penny knows is the front axle broke, the karts in front of her derailed, the screams louder, the crack sounds, the smell of blood.
Until Penny's kart derailed too, she was thrown off together with dolly, she could see everything and hear everything, the sky, the sun setting, the choir's screams reducing but the horrified and shock screams of the other visitors.
The front axle, right in front of her.
She didn't even have time to scream, she couldn't feel her body, everything seemed to spin right in front of her, her body falling, and her head falling somewhere. She couldn't feel anything, but at the same time could feel their cold blood mixing with her warm blood, she could see their bodies, laying there, forever frozen in an unconscious or scared expression, they were scared, just like her.
She tried to scream, but she couldn't, she was there, her head was there, but she couldn't do anything, just watch, and see her mutilated body, holding her dolly, now broken and beheaded, just like her, the only thing she could notice was one of the rollercoasters part falling, crushing her head.
... Where is it? Where's her head? Where's her soul? Why is everything spinning...
Penny quickly wakes up, sweating cold, she touches her neck, her head, is there, her head is there, she adjusts her eyes and looks around, she was in the kitchen, sitting in the chair while the notebook was in front of her.
" How to get custody of a minor? "
That was what the site said, she remembers what happened, she spent last night awake, trying to find a job and a way to get Ezra's custody, so they could leave this town, but first she needed money, and to get money she needed a job.
She tried every place in Uranium City, but nobody had an open place for her or didn't pay what she needed, her last job fired her because of cost-cutting, the economy in this town was so fucked up, but nobody left, no matter what, nobody in this town left this place, at least not alive...
Alive
She shakes this thought off her head, she was going to leave this town no matter what, she has to find a job, she needs to find a job. She was waiting for a call of the employment agency, she hoped for a call.
She yawns as she looks around the kitchen, the plates in the sink, together with hers and Ezra's meds, her doll resting in another chair, old papers and newspapers in the table together with the notebook, her eyes lingering through the multiple newspapers, some of them weren't even related to Uranium.
" New candidate for mayor in Uranium City? "
" Sex worker is accused of murder in France. "
" Teenager makes emotional homage to online boyfriend. "
" New cat shop with space and aliens theme is open in Prince Albert! "
" Blackwood café, a beloved café in Uranium City, is closed temporary. "
" Our six saints. "
Penny sighs as she stands up, she throws the old newspapers in the trash, she didn't need any newspaper now, especially the last one, she was so tired of this, of this stupid news, of this stupid town and people.
But not everyone here is stupid, at least she has some support here, like Ezra, Astrid, Corey, Hank, Trishna... and Tammy... Oh... Tammy...
Her thoughts were interrupted when she receives a call, her heart stops for a second, her breath speeding up, it must be the employment agency, right? It has to be them. She walks to the living room, where her phone was, she picks it up and reads the contact name.
" Mrs Jiwa (employment agency) "
Finally.
Penny quickly answers the phone, her breath returning to normal, but her heart was anxious, waiting for the voice in the other side to say something.
" Ms Lamb? It's me... Aditi Jiwa, from the Employment Agency, you are my sister's friend, Trishna. We talked last night- "
" Yes, I know. Anything new? "
Penny interrupts her, but Aditi knew it wasn't out of bad manners, she knew how desperate Penny was for a job, for a light to shine in her life, for an opportunity.
" Good news, Penny! I found a job for you... and it pays exactly what you need, actually, even more...! "
Hearing these words, Penny faces lights up with hope, but she could sense the hesitance in Aditi's voice, Penny could feel there's something wrong, an opportunity appears for her, but now, what's the bad side of it?
" But...? "
" It's... It's in the Wonder Ville fair. "
Penny freezes at this, her heartbeat spending up, Wonder Ville... the fair, it was closed since the accident, she thought she wouldn't have to hear this name again, she stays quiet, waiting for Aditi to continue, she knew the woman could feel her anxiety and confusion.
" The owner, Karl Karnak, he doesn't want to abandon the place, and some weird things started to happen in the fair, he suspects it's just some teenagers messing with the place, and he needs a night guard..., " Aditi continues, her voice sounding even more soft through the phone. " Penny- "
" No. " Penny replies coldly, she refused to go back to the fair, she just couldn't, not after the accident, that place was shut down, it deserved to be shut down, to be abandoned, her colleagues died there, it felt weird, she barely knew or talked to any of them, but she felt such a weird grief for them, it was like she was close to them, but she wasn't, and she knew that.
" I knew you wouldn't accept, Trishna warned... but... never mind! I'm sorry about this, Penny, but... just so you know, the job won't be taken so soon, nobody wants to work thereafter... the six... five saints accident, and Karl really wants to recompense for everything... I'm sorry! I shouldn't have... good afternoon, Ms Lamb. "
" Good afternoon, Aditi. "
Penny hangs up the phone, sitting in the couch, sighing as she passed her fingers through her hair, looking at the ceiling, thinking about the job offer, she couldn't accept it, not after everything, right? Night Guard at the fair... No, no, she wanted to forget that place and anything related to it, but... she didn't have any other offer, especially that she isn't that mentally stable or has experience with something.
She stopped looking at the ceiling, she refused to work there, no matter what, she looked around the living room, until her eyes topped at the photos in the walls. Two photos in specific. Hers and Ezra...
Ezra... she isn't doing this just for her, but for him! They need to leave this shitty foster home, this town, leave everything behind, and start a new life, she promised herself she would do this, she promised she would take Ezra with him.
Penny groaned in indecision, laying in the couch, what could she do now?
Penny picks her phone and checks the hours, 9 P.M, Ezra was already in his room, she wasn't sure if he was sleeping or not, she would check later, but now, she has to solve something.
She opens the contacts apps and types Mrs Jiwa number, she wasn't sure if she would pick up, or if this was the right thing to do, but she had to, she needed a job, she needed money.
Penny calls Mrs Jiwa, and after some minutes, Mrs Jiwa picks up, she was probably confused on why Penny was calling her now.
" Hey, Aditi... you said the job wouldn't be taken so soon... how do I... apply? "
A shot article wrote by Virgil Ross, local journalist of Uranium.
" THEY WERE PROMISED A RIDE THAT WOULD DEFY DEATH, BUT FATE HAD SOMETHING ELSE IN STORE FOR THEM. "
On Monday, September 14th, a mass tragedy happened on in the small town of Uranium City, Saskatchewan. Five teenagers were brutally killed in a rollercoaster accident in the Wonder ville fair.
The St Cassian Chamber Choir was the choir of the St Cassian Catholic high school, conducted by Father Louis P. Markus, the teacher and pastor, the Choir competed in the Kiwanis International Singing Competition for their Senior concert in the Wonder ville fair, after the competition, the teenagers were having fun, until they boarded the cyclone rollercoaster.
They boarded the Cyclone Rollercoaster at 6:17 p.m, at 6:19, the same rollercoaster's front axle would break, causing it to derail at the apex of the loop-DE-loop, hurtling the children to their deaths, according to the police, the carny is suspected of being drunk.
Five members of the choir died, Ocean O'Connell Rosenberg, Noel Gruber, Mischa Bachinski, Richard Potts and Constance Blackwood, however, one member survived, the member was identified as Penny Lamb, she is now in the Uranium's Hospital recovering from her injuries, that include broken bones, multiple cuts and a neck injure.
The fair will be shut down and the owners will destroy the cyclone rollercoaster, the owner of the fair, Karl Karnak, said that:
" We are very sorry about this, we never knew the rollercoaster was broken, we will shut down the fair and destroy the rollercoaster, we give our condolences to the family, and we will pay for Penny's stay in the hospital and for the other children funerals. "
The funerals will be on September 18th, at 9:00 AM, it will be a catholic funeral and after that, the church will hold a mass in homage to them.
We will pray for our deceased five saints, and our six saith, Penny, to recover soon.
Tammy walked through the school hallways full of students, whispers and whispers fill the place, many voices overlapping each other, everyone talked about just one thing: The cyclone rollercoaster disaster.
Nothing like this ever happened in Uranium, usually it just had boring local news, but a mass tragedy? It was a shocking new to everyone, and it will probably be talked about for some time, weeks, perhaps months, until everyone forgets about it and goes back to their boring lives.
Everyone talked about Ocean, Noel, Mischa, Ricky and Constance, but a few whispers talked about Jane Doe, the unidentified body. Tammy thought it was unfair, in a town where everyone knew everyone, and no secret has hidden, someone wasn't unidentified, forgotten by everyone in the small town.
There were rumors about a girl that joined last minute, or about a girl that was ignored by everyone for being boring and uninteresting.
" Maybe she wasn't that important to remember. "
This felt so wrong to Tammy, to say this about someone, dead or alive, was just wrong. But Tammy couldn't shake off the feeling that something was missing these days, since the accident, since the choir died, maybe it was just grief, although the barely interacted with any of them.
No, it was more than that, it was like a void, like she had forgotten something, or someone... someone?
It was impossible she would forget about someone! Who she would forget? She would never forget about anyone! But she couldn't take this thought off her head
" I'm forgetting something. "
Tammy mumbles to herself as she goes to her locker, just to notice a girl, Trishna, one of the yearbook members, giving the other students some sort of book, it looked like a yearbook, but the yearbooks were just going to be given in the last weeks of school, right? Tammy continues to observe Trishna, curiously.
Trishna notices it, she gives a soft smile at the other girl and approaches her, holding the books.
" Hey Tammy! Do you want one? The yearbook club decided to make this, in homage to the choir. " Trishna says as she offers Tammy one, it was a white book with a cross, the word " Our Six Saints " in red, the school colors. Tammy accepts it, analyzing the book's appearance, before opening it.
" Oh, thanks, Trish! It's nice of you guys to do this for them, I'm sure they would have loved this! " Tammy replies as she looks at the content of the book, she actually didn't know if the choir would've liked this, but it looked like the yearbook club had put so much effort, and Trishna looked so proud of it.
" I hope so, we tried our best to do something at least respectful to them, it was so... so out of nowhere, you know? And Father Markus is gone too... it's horrible! " Trishna comments, as she sighs a bit, Tammy wasn't paying so much attention, still looking at the book's content.
There were a bunch of messages written by students and teachers, saying how they were going to be missed and giving consolations to family and friends, photos of the choir, together or separately, photos of them in competitions, field trips, with Father Markus, and most of the photos only had the 5 members.
Until Tammy came across a few photos, it was just 5 photos, but she noticed something, someone, a sixth person, the sixth member...
Jane Doe.
But Tammy couldn't see her face, or it was covered by something, or she was hiding behind someone, she felt a weird feeling seeing the faceless girl, she felt a déjà vu, like she knew this girl, but she couldn't tell who she was, nobody could.
Tammy looked around to see that Trishna wasn't there anymore, did she get so distracted she didn't notice the other girl leaving? But this didn't matter to know, what matters to Tammy now is to discover somehow who this girl was, who was she? Who was the one that now is considered the most forgetful girl in town.
Tammy spent the rest of the school day, except for the classes, asking people if they noticed someone missing, asking about the mysterious girl in the picture, asking her friends their copy to see if there were any different photos, she even asked the yearbook club members if they knew anything or had any other photo, but all she got was.
" No, sorry... "
She was now hopeless, in the yearbook room, she had no clue, nothing, the only she had to do now is burry this feeling and forget Jane Doe like everyone else? She couldn't believe it, how could someone just- just be forgotten like that.
As Tammy looks around the room with nothing more to do, she notices something in the trash, it looked like... like...
A photo.
Her curiosity had gotten better than her, she walks to the trash can and picks the photo, analyzing it and recognizing it, it was the photo used to the newspaper. It was too much damaged, how did it get here? It was for the yearbook? But they already had the photos in the computer, right?
Tammy looks at the photo, it was damaged, but she finally could see the face of the mysterious girl, she could see it.
Her face washes with realization and guilty, her fingers touching the girl's face in the photo, her mind racing.
