For years, it has been reported that women are significantly more likely to be injured in car crashes than men—Jezebel wrote about the phenomenon back in 2011, when it appeared that seat belts were to blame.

When “woman-type” dummy was introduced in 2003, it was, and still is, only 5 feet tall, and weighs 110 pounds, just a touch outside the dimensions of your average woman.”

I was reading an article earlier about a rape case that became famous because the survivor was coerced into saying that she made it up, and everyone hated her and used her as an example of False Rape Accusations(TM) and then years later police found the rapist and it turns out she was telling the truth (no shit, assholes).

Anyway the reason the police and the girl’s caregivers gave for not believing her and accusing her of making it up for “drama” were that:

She told the details of what happened in a monotone, desensitized way and wasn’t making eye contact

She mixed up the sequence of events when recounting the memory

She wanted to keep her same bedspread afterwards

So to be clear, they didn’t believe her and coerced her into revoking her accusation because she experienced dissociation, her memory of the event was stored differently than other memories, and she wanted something familiar.

In other words, they didn’t believe she was raped because she experienced trauma. She had a completely normal and common traumatic response to a traumatic event, and instead of literally anyone caring enough to learn about trauma and realize that her experiencing PTSD is proof in and of itself that something traumatic happened, they just assumed she was lying.

It’s no wonder that rape survivors never get justice when just experiencing the natural reaction to traumatic violation is used to discount your credibility completely.

Fuck everyone who doubts survivors for their PTSD symptoms. It’s inexcusable.

It is trapping her in an interaction she cannot leave of her own consent out of fear of retaliation. You asking where she’s headed isn’t “small talk”. It is invasive and makes her fear for her safety by being followed. Your presence forces women to consider safety before comfort or agency. Be conscious of that when you interact with women in public space.
