don’t just pay it. do not automatically pay the hospital bill when you receive it. call your health insurance provider and POLITELY say, “excuse me, i just received a bill for $1200 for my hospital visit/ER visit/etc., is that the correct amount i’m supposed to pay?” because hospitals bill you before your health insurance and they will take your money no matter how the amount due may change based on your health insurance looking at it. 90% of the time, if your health insurance is in any way involved in the payment of that bill, you do not have to pay as much as the hospital is billing you for. call your health insurance provider first, and POLITELY request clarification, always remember that the person you are talking to is human and this is just their job, and then you will very likely find out you actually only owe $500.
don’t shout at anyone about it, don’t get mad, just understand that this is The Way Things Are right now and call your health insurance provider before paying the bill your hospital just sent you. there’s a chance the hospital bill might be correct, true, but call your health insurance provider.
THIS IS SUPER IMPORTANT. after my car accident last year the hospital billed me ~$8000. They sent me letters asking me to pay, and I called them back saying my insurance was processing the claim. This is also what I told the collection agency when they kept calling me about the $1000 emergency room fee (billed separately from the hospital fee, mind you). Once everything got straightened out, all I was actually liable for was my $200 emergency copay.
Also, it is important [for people receiving medical care in the USA] to carefully read all of the items on the medical bill and look for errors and overcharges. I know that the normal feelings of avoidance and dread can make it hard to look at scary hospital bills, and that’s okay! But as the OP mentions, private orgs like hospitals don’t monitor overpayment of bills - they are motivated to charge you extra - and it is basically impossible to get your money back. Read the bill carefully and make sure that the charges are correct, using the links below for help if you need. If they haven’t sent you an itemized list, you can ask for one. Sometimes you will be charged extra for items or treatment you didn’t receive. Most people don’t know that you can dispute medical bills! But in 2009, Consumer Reports stated that 8 out of 10 medical bills scrutinized by a watchdog had errors, and generally you are not obligated to pay for someone else’s error.
You may be charged for using medication that you actually brought into the hospital with you - that’s easy to dispute! You may be charged for the consumables used during your stay such as sheets, gloves, gowns, etc - the hospital should actually cover that under its running budget. You may be charged for a brand name drug if the generic was available for cheaper - the links below explain how and when you can dispute this. You may be charged a surprisingly expensive “oral administration fee” (where a nurse puts pills for you to take in a little clean paper cup and then hands it to you) but that’s worth disputing if you were actually able to take the pill out of a bottle and put it in your own mouth. “I’m not being reckless dammit! I’m doing my job Y/N. SAVING PEOPLE?” His voice was hoarse, body covered in dirt and dried blood.
“Being reckless is almost blasting your arms off Katsuki! You tried doing everything by yourself and now you can barley hold your own weight up. Why are you acting like this? Of all times??” Y/N wasn’t afraid to challenge Ground Zero back. So when their fiance almost goes and kills himself for the fifth time this month, they don’t feel the need to hold back on sharing exactly how they were feeling. “I thought you stopped all this non-sense two years ago, you were working so well with the other heroes.” Mentioning his coworkers must have set off a fuse as the blond forcefully struggled to stand up and try to push past you. “I did what I had to do, that’s it. Drop it.”
The bedroom suddenly felt still, Katsuki’s voice had been stern and bitter. “I’m going to go shower. Just....just leave me alone.” This evenings fight started the moment he came home looking half dead and broken, and seemed to be coming to an end late into the night. Y/n could only watch on as the banged up hero trudged down their carpeted hall and into the shower room. Their breath was only released when the door was slammed shut, the echo of Katsuki’s anger sounding through the cold apartment.
Why was it like this? It didn’t used to be. What changed?
“Damn you Katsuki...” Y/n was quick to try and hold down their frustration, walking out to the kitchen to turn the water heater on. Even if they were mad, confused and maybe hurt, how could they not turn on the hot water? Any good fiance(e) would at least make sure their partner was comfortable.
“FUCK, the water!” His voice rang out again, the shower room door slamming against the wall.
“I GOT IT.”
After a few moments, only the sound of the door closing again showed they were acknowledged. This was tiring.
Standing in the kitchen, a small stove light was all that illuminated the dark and lonely kitchen. The soft warm glow gently shined against the engagement ring as y/n finally felt the tension in their muscles release. Why did their face feel wet? Blurry vision? Impossible. They must have been tired. There was no reason to be crying right now. When did Y/n start crying?
“It’s fine, it’s fine. Everything is going to be okay. It will be.” Their voice was so sore and barley audible. Flashes of all the fights the both of them had been having over the past few months started to drown y/n’s mind. The tingling of reasoning was etched into their thoughts, they knew exactly why these fights started. Katsuki was stressed with Hero work and getting married. Y/n was stressed with the exact same thing, the difference was Katsuki was pushing himself away through it all. Why was he so afraid to just open up again? Why couldn’t he just tell them what was bothering him so much?
Using the nearby sink, Y/n splashed cold water onto their face in an attempt to sooth the warm and burning skin around their swollen eyes. With arms supporting their body against the end of the sink, the sound of dripping water was soothing and grounding.
With Katsuki, the sound of running water hitting the tiles helped drown out any of his racing thoughts as his heart tried to slow down. Even the great Bakugo Katsuki knew that this was wrong, that these fights were unnecessary and just made the situation worse. He just....he couldn’t help it. Y/n just couldn’t understand...they couldn’t see everything, that’s all. Eventually they will be able to. He just had to be patient until then, which god dammit he knew he wasn’t even doing that right. “Shit.....shit...shit.” mutters escaped through Katsuki’s clenched teeth, his weakened body leaning against the wall for support. If the evening had gone differently, maybe he and y/n could have shared a shower together with a nice bath. They could have ended the night in a warm and welcoming bed together. There were still some nights like this, but they were slowly being spread out and thinned. He hated it. He loathed it with a passion.

It had been an hour now, so Katsuki must have been taking a long soak in the tub.
“I said I’d never let you go, and I never did...” you sang quietly to yourself, the random american rock song playing through your head. It was one that Kirishima had introduced to you and Katsuki when he gifted the both of you some of his favorite cds. The bedroom was cold, so you kept yourself tucked under the warm and soft covers of your bed. With bedside lamps on, there was enough light in the room to read some of the books that your fiance kept beside the bed. Even now the young hero still enjoyed retiring to a somewhat early night. Books were his usual go to wind down for the day, followed by small chatter and a kiss goodnight. Just the thought of your soon to be husband brought a small and tired smile to your face. “Oh Kats....” I miss you.
“Good, you aren’t asleep yet.” You jumped a bit from your book, quickly looking up to see Katsuki at the entrance of your shared bedroom. He had a towel wrapped around his waist, and his hair was still dripping wet. “Yeah...I am. I wanted to wait for you.”
With a simple nod, the tired but refreshed male stepped into the room to further dry up and change into his nightwear. Quietly watching on, you set the book back where it belonged and adjusted the covers around you.
Silence.
How long would it last?
“Katsuki I-” He seemed to perk up from his dresser when his name was called, but the both of you were interrupted by a loud and consistent beeping. “The hell?”
You eyes widen a bit, hurriedly jumping out of bed to jog over beside your....beside Katsuki. Your work communicator that you kept on the dresser was going off with the emergency alarm and flashing yellow lights. You both share a quick glance before you slip on the device and answer the call.
“Mega-Force! An Emergency in Tokyo sector A. The villain has already been apprehended, but the damage has continued to progress and become even more hazardous.”
This must have been from the villain Katsuki was fighting along with the other pro heroes!
“You are being requested to help lead the effort of maintaining and preventing further damage to buildings and civilians.”
You were usually only called on for big emergencies, Katsuki knew this too.
“Mega-Force, confirming Request. TOA fifteen minuets.”
“Request Confirmed. Information and instructions are being sent to you now. Message Over.”
“Y/n wait-”
“I’m sorry, I have to go. You heard the message Kats.” You were already getting undressed, throwing open your drawer as you slipped on some leggings and a sports bra. “I know but..please dammit, just wait a second!”
“I can’t! I can’t waste time, what if more people get hurt??” leaping over the bed, you quickly find and step into your suit container.. ((Think Tony Start and his Nano-technology.)) Waves of deep chromatic blue, black and gold start to shimmer over your body before you hero costume is outfitted. The only skin that was left bare were your hands, a small cut off area around your collar bone, and your arms all the way up to the end of your shoulders. This was to maximize your ability to use your quirk.
“Look, I know you already know it but I’m-”
“Katsuki.” Within moments, you’re standing back in front of your fiance. The small hints of worry and uncertainty on his face bring you some peace. He still loves me, cares about me.
“You don’t have to say it. It’ll be fine. I’m always safe. We’ll have trained teams out there like always. Have faith in me.”
The last bit you spoke struck a cord with the Bakugo.
. He watched now as you slipped on some of your protective gear and your head piece. “Don’t wait up, It’ll probably be an all nighter okay? There’s some dinner in the fridge and you know where the medical supplies are. I’m sorry I can’t help you with that. See you soon.” Just as your about to leave, you feel a firm grip pull at your forearm. “Y/n.”
Katsuki kept his stance, the image of you in your hero uniform burning into his mind. You were about to do real hero work, he should know best how serious this was. But..for some damn reason there was a small pang in his gut that yelled at him to not let you go.
In the few silent moments you shared together, one of your hands reached up to cup the battered one on your arm. “It’ll be okay. I had faith in you coming home to me, so..just do the same for me...” with a few quick steps you wrapped your arms around the warm and now clean smelling man, Katuski doing the same as he pressed a tender kiss to your forehead. “I know.” his voice was quiet.
“I mean it, I’ll see you soon Kats.”
“See you soon sparks.”
With that, you were off and out of the room. Just in the bedroom he could hear the front door open then quickly shut closed. He was alone.
Katsuki knew that he wasn’t being called forth because of his direct involvement with the Villain earlier that day. All the hero’s who helped take down the sucker were given the next few days off to heal and get back on track. For a little while he had hoped that he could use these days to finally see you. To actually talk to you and have more than just a few minuets and a good night kiss. Sure he understood how busy hero work could get, but that didn’t stop him from at least feeling a little guilty for having spent so much time away from HIS fiance(e). Logically, he came to the conclusion that this mission would at max last two days -if even that- which meant he would have a day with you. “Grr...that’s fine. IT’s fine.” We just need to talk, not yell. We need to stop yelling....
Maybe then I can try explaining all these emotions I've been feeling.

Theseus is tasked with watching over Newts case while he and Tina are on a very important date! The Reader is on a vacation and happens to come across this struggle.

The night air was chill as the streets were covered in thin moisture. It had rained just moments ago which had increasingly lowered the temperature, much to (y/n)’s dismay. She wrapped her red scarf tighter around her face in an attempt to keep the cooler air away.
“Why is it so cold here, why is it always so wet and why for the love of who or whatever enjoys this weather decided to make one of my last days here so miserable..” The poor girl had decided to visit the large island to sight see and vacation away from her work. Being overwhelmed with case files and organizing finished cases was not the most fun. Sure she enjoyed the satisfactions of the Aurors who finished a file or returned back safely...but too much is just too much. A good break was well deserved!
“Oh for Merlin’s sake-! Get back here this INSTANCE.” The sudden voice jostled (y/n) from her hypnotic state of walking and ignoring her surroundings until she got back to her room. Whoever it was sounded like they were having a hard time.
Just ignore it and keep going, you’ll be out of the cold soon enough.. she thought to herself.
“No get- no no no you’re not allowed to do that! STOP IT!” there was the voice again. She was close enough to be able to identify it as a male. Soon after she heard some crashing noises, followed by a string of curses and what sounded like the scuttle of tiny feet, (y/n) saw a small black figure running towards her on the ground which was being pursued by a rather tall fellow.
“Accio!-” Hearing the man shout at an attempt at a spell, you hesitantly pulled out your wand and kept an eye of the small thing. As it got closer, you were finally able to identify the thing as a small beastie. (y/n) looked back up toward the man who was closing in, instantly picking up that the said man didn’t know what the creature was.
I would have been back by now if I hadn’t stopped...she argued to herself.
Oh well, no time to whine now.
As the creature ran past you, you turned around and lifted your wand.
“Accio Niffler!” You directed your want towards the creature and watched as his body floated into the air, shooting back towards you in quick speed. The little black Niffler was now suspended in the air, floating as he slowly turned and took note of how he was caught yet again with a slump of defeat. (y/n) had forgotten about the person before reached out to pluck the little run away out of the air.
“Aren’t you just the cutest thing?” Her voice was so warm that it almost shocked the Niffler. The (h/c) girl almost laughed, tucking her wand away and she used her free hand to lift the creature to eye level. “It looks like you’ve been causing some trouble hmm?..”
Just as (y/n) was about to speak again, the heavy thumps of feet and pants of air caught her attention. Turning around, she spotted the man from before now in front of her, a hand to his side as his head was facing up, gulping in as much air as he could. She only held the Niffler closer to who, who happily complied and ruffled around in her scarf.
“You were the one chasing after this Niffler. Did he take something from you?” (Y/n) was surprised at the fact that she spoke first. It wasn’t usual for her to start up a conversation.
“A-ah, no Actually...whew..” He took in a deep breath before he dropped his head to finally see who had caught the little beast. The first thing (y/n) noticed was his blue eyes and how they were slightly hidden by his rustled curly fringe.
“Oh.” She felt her cheeks redden, now feeling more like her usual self. He was fairly attractive..okay, more than attractive. He was much taller than her and even in the darkness of the street she could still see the freckles that scattered his face.
“My apologies miss. I was chasing after this..” She noticed the small struggle he seemed to be having and decided to pitch in again.
“Niffler?” (y/n) spoke politely, reaching a hand up to lightly scratch at the purring Nifflers head. He seemed to be enjoying the warmth and the shiny gold necklace you had been wearing.
“Yes, the Niffler. You see, I’m just...taking care of him until my brother returns. I’m sorry to have troubled you tonight.” Feeling bad, you nodded and carefully pulled the soft beastie away from you, watching as it made grabby hands at you with protesting whines. You only smiled and cooed at him, petting his head as you passed him back to the arms of the man.
“No worries uh, sir. I’m sure you would have caught him eventually.” Finally picking up on her accent, the man looked between (y/n) and the Niffler before he crouched down and set the case he had been carrying down beside him. “An American. This must be a very lucky night then.”
(y/n) watched as he opened up the case and set the creature aside. This had bothered her and she crouched down beside him. “I don’t thinks it’s a good idea to just...stuff him in ya know?”
Blinking, it took a moment for him to process what you were saying before he nervously laughed, closing the case as he stood back up again, offering a hand to help her back up.
“I can see where that is an issue. I must assure you that there is no need to worry. This case is..modified to properly accommodate the Niffler.” Taking his hand, she gets back up and wraps her arms around herself. This was probably the most eventful and strange day she’s had here.
“That’s good to know, Mr.?....”
The small pause amused the other, offering a small bow as he looked back toward the girl. “Rude of me, My name is Theseus Scamander, please call me Theseus. I need to thank you again Mrs?...” He offered up a smile that almost blew you away. You didn’t expect to be interacting with him this long. “(y/n) (l/n), but just (y/n) is fine. I’m glad I could help...”
Noting the slight awkwardness of her voice, he moved his gaze away and back down to the case. “Well, it’s getting late I suppose.” He quickly lifted his wrist up to look at his watch. “And it is getting rather cold (y/n). I’m sure you want to be on your way again.”
Theseus could’t help but notice how you eyes were sparking with the dim just streetlights. If he knew better, he could have described them like there were some exotic animal like his brother would have, or used a cheesy line if he had felt comfortable enough or knew you well enough.
(y/n) simply nodded, pulling her scarf around her neck yet again. “It is getting late. You should be getting home too Theses.”
He doesn’t know why, but her voice saying his name flooded him with a warmth he hand’t felt in a very long while.
“I best get going. It was uh, interesting meeting you tonight.” Just as (y/n) was about to walk away. Theseus stepped forward.
“Wait.” He surprised himself. He could see that he surprised her too.
“How about I walk you to where you are staying? As a thank you of course! I apologize if that seems rather forward. It’s alright if you wouldn’t want me too.” (Y/n) listened on, and felt the same warming sensation she had before. She planned on being alone the whole day.
Maybe a bit of company wouldn’t be so bad.
“Sure Theseus, I don’t mind.” Theseus looked a bit surprised, but smiled widely when his offer was accepted. He carefully switched the case over to his other hand and with is free arm, offered it to the girl. “Shall you lead the way then?”
(y/n) smiled, moving forward to carefully wrap her arm around his. “I guess I will.”
Although most of the walk was silent, it was rather enjoyable and calm. There were a few questions about her trip which she happily replied. (y/n) was always careful and knew how dangerous strangers could be, but for some reason she felt completely at ease with the Scamander.
Coming up to a motel, (y/n) lightly squeezed Theseus’s arm and pulled away. He felt a bit odd not having the warmth beside him but ignored it and faced his sudden night companion.
“Thank you for walking me back. I really do appreciate it.” (y/n)’s voice was calm and quiet to be less disturbing and offered him a smile. Theseus only smiled back and reached a hand up to scratch at the back of his neck which was odd for him. Was was he feeling so shy?
“It’s my pleasure. I hope you know I really am thankful for your help earlier. I couldn’t remember the little beast’s name.” (y/n) laughed a bit, making the male smile even more.
“You made one of my last days here the most interesting one I’ve had. I really should be thanking you.”
Theseus rose a brow in slight confusion. Were you really leaving soon?
“Oh, so you’ll be returning back to America?” (y/n) nodded, not aware of the slight conflict the other was feeling.
“I’m sorry for asking so many questions, but when exactly are you leaving?”
“This coming Saturday.” It was currently Thursday night.
Theseus hadn’t put himself out much since...the incident. He knew he was getting better from all the help and support he was getting, but he was still...hesitant to go out and adventure. Maybe this was the time? The moment?
“This might sound a bit crazy.” The Scamander suddenly spoke out. (y/n) rose her brow. “With what happened tonight, i’d be surprised.” He took her comment as a sign of ‘go on’ and cleared his throat, straightening himself out.
“I have work tomorrow in the morning, but..I would like to ask if you are free in the afternoon? Just a quick goodbye meal before you head back to America?”
(y/n)’s eyes widened at the sudden gesture, not really sure of what to say at the moment. The nice gentleman she met tonight wanted to meet with her again. Was it horrible to feel a bit special at the moment?
“Maybe a bit crazy, but I wouldn't mind.” (y/n) smiled a bit wider.
Theseus didn’t know if he was shocked that she had said yes, or that he surprised himself since he had doubted she would accept.
“Oh, yes, right. Good, that’s good.” He felt his collar heating up again, thankful that the night had covered most of the redness he felt he had on his face. He felt like a teenager again back in Hogwarts.
“Do you think you’ll remember where I’m staying tomorrow?” She too felt a bit warm, keeping half of her face covered into her scarf, thankful that she decided to wear it that night. Theseus nodded and looked up at the motels sign.
“I’m sure I can remember it. I’ll just have the front desk call you when I arrive. Thank you for tonight (y/n), have a good night.” Relying on his job patterns, he gave a curt solution and reply out of habit as he briskly walked away. Once he was far enough, he cursed to himself for having left you there so suddenly. He’d have to apologize tomorrow afternoon. Theseus hand’t felt this unsure but exciting emotion in a long while and he just guessed his mind reverted him to something he knew he could rely on. Professional.
(y/n) only stood there, watching as Theseu’s figure slowly became smaller and smaller. She wondered why he hadn’t just apparated. Maybe he was in thought?
Either way, she had to admit that she was looking forward to tomorrow, even if the moment before was a bit awkward
“Lucky me.” they both whispered to themselves that night. Strangers meeting by chance and finding a rare connection they haven’t even noticed yet.
… Out there in this hell site it’ll be really nice if someone could write a Fantastic Beasts imagine for any of the two Scamander siblings based on “I’ll Never Love Again” from “A Star Is Born” because it’s a great song and I mean the feels, man. Please you guys I’ll love you forever!!!

‘Oh ow...OW this HURTS.’ were the first thoughts you had this morning when you had woken up. You had ended up falling asleep in an uncomfortable siting position in the moon calf’s habitat. The youngest of the bunch had fallen ill and you had taken it upon yourself to care for them until they had gotten better.
Newt being the sweet man he is offered to watch the calf for the night, arguing that “I am their caretaker after all.” but your determined and stubborn self sat right into the habitat with the little moonie in your arms until Newt was ‘forced’ to leave with a smile crawling onto his lips. You rolled your eyes with a smile of your own remembering that silly moment.
Hearing a small gurgle, you looked down at the said moon calf with loving eyes and an adoring coo in your whispers. “Good morning little darling, you’ve given mummy and I quite the fright haven’t you?” the little moonie only hummed out, trying to move from their place in your lap. Moving your arms from around them, you watched as the calf attempt to walk out before tripping over your leg with a cry.
“You silly goose, even I knew that was going to happen.” With the little moon calf whining, you cooed the baby as you scooped them back into your arms and lap, the moon calf calming down and instantly falling asleep again.
Simply amazing
Hearing the sudden voice made you jump in your spot, lightly hissing when the calf roused around in your lap. When you saw they had settled down again, you quickly looked up to find the culprit and spotted Newt a few meters away, his expression a little surprised but still had a lingering sense of peace.
“What are you surprised about mister? Giving me a fright like that.” the red-brown haired male looked a bit confused, but dismissed the moment as a result of unique resting choice. Not that it was really unique since he does things like this all the time...
Carefully standing with the calf in your arms, you hummed a morning tune as you walked towards your dear friend.
“Sorry for surprising you (y/n), I thought I had been quiet enough coming in.”
You shook your head and jutted your hip out, lightly bumping against Newt as you walked back to the hut. “No worries, I’m sure you meant well.” You couldn’t help but feel a warm buzz in your chest. Sure you were use to sharing compliments with each other, but this one had been said with such gentleness that it simply left you almost in awe. Hearing quickened steps, the wizard and caught up to you and you both enjoyed the peaceful walk back.
I’m a bit tired this morning...should have known you weren't coming up and gone to bed earlier.
You couldn't help yourself and sighed again, carefully placing the calf into a caring pen that you and Newt had set up the night before once you had gotten closer to the hut. “You should have gone to bed when I decided to stay down here. I’m sorry for having kept you up so late Newt.
When you had finally turned to face your friend, the freckled man had the same confused expression as before, staying silent for a few moments. You rose a brow in questions which prompted him to reply. “Oh, um...yes I probably should have...but there’s no need to be sorry.” Newt sounded a bit odd, but you dismissed it as he was tired as well.
About two nights ago, you had decided to visit your dear old friend since you hadn’t seen him since his trip to the United States. From the letters you had received in the meantime, you could only imagine the adventures he had insured. The reason for your prolonged stay was the fact that Newt had looked a bit of a mess, explaining how one of his moon calves had fallen ill and wasn't getting better. You being the amazing friend you are rolled your sleeves up and insisted on helping. Some medicine in feeding here and building caring pen there then done! The night last you had decided to stay another night just to watch the last of the illness leave.
Seeing the rather tried looking man yawn for what seemed like the fifth time, you nudged the magi zoologist with your elbow, a jerking like motion sprouting from him. With a quick shake of his head, he looked down towards you with his gorgeous and adorably sea blue sleepy eyes hiding behind is messy curls. “How about you start mixing some of the feed? I’ll go ahead and barrel out the food to your children.”
With a small and lopsided smile, Newt shook his head and rolled his sleeves up, your eyes wandering to his scars like always. “No I’m quite alright. The foods heavier today since I’ve had to keep all my creatures off their meals until I found the source of what was wrong.It’ll be my peace offering.”
“Only if you insist. I’ll be to the side mixing the feed. Call out if you need anything.” You let your eyes linger on Newts scars for a moment longer before tearing them away to move over to the feed station.
Why are you such a blessing in my life?
You smiled as you mixed and filled buckets with feed, turning to return a phrase when you froze.
Newt was already past Frank’s old habitat.
That couldn’t be, Newts words were clear and right beside you. He should have been right next to you when you heard him.
Oh Merlin, your true mamas upset that your not around-ouch that hurt.
Not a moment passed when you heard a metal thud and a few echoed hushed calming words from the slightly awkward man. You were so confused, sure you’ve dealt with many sorts of things since you’ve met your best friend, and you knew there were Legilimens, but you knew you are not a legilimens! Something was not right.
Swallowing the lump in your throat, you called out to Newt.
“Darling, I’ve finished up mixing. Do you need me to do anything else?”
After a pause, you hear the man call out to you. “No thank you! I’ll go ahead and feed them the mixes. You go on up and get ready for the day love.”
You wait a moment, and his voice floods you again.
I love it when she calls me darling-Yes hold on Frank I’ve got your breakfast. I’ll go grab the mix...
Your eyes widen as you gasp, oh Merlin you could hear Newt’s thoughts! At least..you think you could? Your inner thoughts were interrupted by a sudden thud.
Oh no
You quickly checked to make sure it wasn’t the moonie when you spotted Newt on the floor, looking a bit frazzled. You couldn't help with the small laugh that left your lips, feeling bad that your friend had fallen down.
She’s still here, oh no
Newt on the other hand seemed to be a bit red faced, his eyes looking everywhere but you. No matter how long you two have known each other, Newton still felt a bit embarrassed when he would make a fool of himself in front of you.
There you go looking like an idiot...
Dusting himself off, he slowly made his way towards you, then past you to the buckets.You bit your lip and wrapped your arms around yourself with an amused smile. Yep, you could read his mind.
“You alright there?”
“Y-yes, I’m perfectly fine...” His eyes only met with your for a moment before he shifted them away, making his way back towards where he came.
Is she cold? No, her skin is still even. Maybe she’s just amused...
Deciding it was best to let the man be, you make your way into the hut and up the wooden step ladder.
Once out, you took a moment to relax and take in your environment. It smelled deeply of Newt and radiated the wizards presence. Taking in another deep breath, an..interesting smell flooded your senses. “Oh..oh that’s not nice. It must be from the moon calves habitat...” now feeling a bit dirty, you turn back to the case and kneel down close it, turning it to it’s muggle worthy setting. Popping the case back open, you smile and pull out one of Newts extra dress shirts and a pair of his socks. You use the clothes from the case since it’s not the clothes newt directly wears everyday(and possibly because that’s where the clothes smelled most like him). You turn the case back to it’s original setting before you move off to shower and prepare for the day.
Case is closed that’s good.
“Dear lord!” you almost screamed, you would have dropped the shampoo in your hands if you weren’t careful! Newts voice had flooded around you again. You heard footsteps coming towards the bathroom door. “(y/n)? Are you...alright? Did you hurt yourself?” You placed a hand over your chest, your heart thumping hard from the surprise..and a bit from how caring the man on the other side of the door was. “Yes, I-I’m fine! Just dropped the shampoo is all.”
You took his silence and his fading footsteps as a sign of him believing you.
Gave me a fright there. I think I wouldn’t have been able to go in and see..Newton you bloak. Alright breakfast..eggs...sausage? No no she doesn’t like that. Honeyed Ham? Yes.
You smiled, never unimpressed by the kindness Newt had always shown. Even more so impressed that he remembered how you preferred your ham!
Tea...Tea.....ah! Tea.
“Oh you silly adorable man..” you couldn’t help yourself and let your thoughts out, turning the water off and stepping out of the shower.
From what you’ve collected, the mind hearing has a range. That’s a start isn’t it?
You pulled your wand off of the sink table near your clothes and pointed to your hair, casting a hot-air charm that dried your locks. Deciding to not be lazy, you tie your hair up and stick your wand right into it. You dried yourself off with one of the fuzzy towels in newts Bathroom and slipped on your clothes, Newts shirt and socks in place on your own.
“Newt!” You called out, walking out of the bathroom. “I’ve finished up, if you wanted to hop in you can now.” tucking away your clothes into your bag, you heard a string of hushed curses flow from the kitchen.
Oh bugger-ow- cooking hurts. This is why she cooks when she’s visit.-Oh, (y/n)s done. Hopefully I haven’t messed this up to much...
“I’m alright! Ah...breakfast is done?...I think..” He sounded a bit unsure of himself and once you made your way down to the kitchen you could see why.
She’s wearing one of my shirts.
You felt your face redden, not sure of why since you borrowed his clothes all the time. Maybe it was because you could hear his thoughts? You didn’t even need to look at him and you felt his eyes on you, at least for a moment.
The eggs looked a bit burned and the ham was...quite crispy. Which isn’t always bad. You offered up a smile, Newt returning a bit of an awkward one. “I wanted to make breakfast as um, as thanks.” After a small pause, he continued, “For helping me..with the moon calf...”
You’re making a fool of yourself, apologize and-
You frowned and moved forward to place your hand on his arm, your other one grabbing his hand. “I love it. The ham is good when it’s crispy. Thank you Newt.” You searched Newts expression, and finally smiled when he let the corners of his mouth twitch up. A bit hesitant, his hand squeezed your before he had let go, moving to pull out some plates.
She’s being nice. You know that. There’s nothing there.
Confused again, you had subconsciously pulled your hand away which had surprised Newt a bit. He had gotten use to your touch which was hard for him, so when something out of the ordinary he can instantly tell.
“Is everything alright?” You could hear the concern in his voice, albeit it a bit rough and lower in the morning. You averted your eyes and took the plates from Newts hands. “No no, everything’s fine. Just an odd morning I suppose.”
Somethings not alright. Did I do something? I don’t think I did...
Feeling guilty for lying about what was going on, you pat the taller males shoulder, offering him a small smile. “You’ve done nothing wrong Newt don’t worry. Let’s share this amazing breakfast you’ve made for us!”
It’s like she’s read my mind. no-Silly man, you’re as obvious as a doe doe bird in a muggle store. Look at her, she’s feeling bad for you.
You frown again, happy that your back was facing the wizard. This sounded like the Newt you had first met back in Hogwarts.
She’s probably feeling awkward now. She’s not even facing me...she hasn't called me any of her names since earlier this morning.
Your expression softens hearing his concerns. Sitting down, you wait until the slightly rugged man takes a seat beside you. Once he’s seated, you pull your wand out and enchant the food to start serving itself to you and Newt. Not wanting to off put Newt even more, you both stay silent and start to eat when serving is finished.
This tastes horrible. How is (y/n) even eating this. Oh you know you idiot, she’s being the sweet amazing..-
You pick up from the corner of your eye that Newt takes a glance at you.
And beautiful...but she’s being nice to you. Like she has been since you’ve met...
At his thought you stop chewing and feel your face drop, a frown now clearly evident on your lips. You would have been flattered at being complimented, but that fact that someone so important to you is putting themselves through what he’s feeling is much more important at the moment.
Oh Merlin, even she can’t hide how bad this tastes, there you’ve done it Newton.
“(y/n) I know this doesn’t taste so good so I ca-” You lift a hand up and Newt pauses, not sure of what he’s suppose to do. “Don’t be silly darling, you know I like my food a little crispy and smokey.” You smiled, maybe a bit forcefully in hopes of calming the person besides you.
You see him a bit frozen, his eyes staring straight into yours. How you could look at them all day if your could. They were beautiful...
That’s not her real smile.
You curse at yourself, of course he would be able to see through it. He’s your best friend of dear sake.
Newt offers up a not so right smile of his own, clearing his throat as he starts to clean up. “I-I, I’m done for this morning. I’ll be off reading for the morning.....You an join me when you finish if you’d like.”
Did you just repeat...you’re messing up. Why are you doing so horribly this morning. (Y/n) comes by all the time and you don’t make as near of a mess of yourself. Now she’s most likely uncomfortable...
You were about to reach out to him finally reassure him you weren’t before his thought rush through again and stop you. He wouldn’t even look at you.
Why would such a sweet woman like her want to stay around here with me.
“Newt...”
The wizard must have not heard you as he continued to walk out, disappearing when he turns the corner to what you guess was him heading to his small library.
Shes beautiful, you’re ragged.
You hear the library door’s shut a little louder than normal. You can’t believe the things your hearing. Had newt always thought like this? Even after all these years?
She’s composed, and oh my love, shes amazing smart and talented. Sure you know your way around the creatures better than anyone..but can you even properly be a real man around the woman you adore?
You could feel the pain and love in his words, your eyes watering without you even noticing. It made you feel a bit better to see him confident in his work and...well being able to hear how he thinks of you. But that wasn’t what was important.
He was more obviously like then when the two of your were younger. At first it wasn’t as bad. Sure he wasn’t the most confident, but he was happy, and he didn’t let mistakes run his life. He had even become more confident in himself for a little while...before he met Leta. That girl build his confidence down to only break it apart over and over again. You had even thought you had lost your friend for the longest time which has hurt you too. Physically, mentally and emotionally.
For a smaller time afterward you were able to be there for him again, when he was trying to get better. It was cut short when he was expelled. You both were devastated, but Newt was confident that he was doing the right thing. It was the first time you had seen him have such a pure confidence again.
For years after that, you two slowly got closer again through owls and home visits during the holidays.
Finally, after you had graduated, you were able to spend longer than a few weeks together, and your friendship bloomed into the beautiful thing it was today.
Sadly however, at the moment it feels like all those years ago...again.
How could she ever like you...love you...Newton....
“Oh Newt.” That was it, you couldn’t let the most important person carry on like this. You quickly cleared your breakfast away and hurried yourself over to the library.
You’re not good enough, you’re not good enough for her
Your heart was thumping against your chest, the sadness disappointment seeping from his thoughts are flooding you.
You just need to give up don’t you?
You finally made it to the door and swung it open, the sudden bang shocking Newt as he almost jumps out of his chair. He’s quick to collect himself and wipe at his face, facing you but not enough to completely expose himself to you.
“Newt-ton Artemis F-Fido Lurch Scam-mander!” You hadn’t expected your voice to sound so shaky, but you knew your emotions came across when the man in front of you now fully faced you.
She’s upset, angry, she looks sad, disappointed-probably at you- whats wrong did something happen did she-
“You idiot! No, not you aren’t a idiot. Just, you silly man stop thinking for a moment!”
Newton looked so confused, he didn’t quite understand what you had meant, which you could tell even if you couldn’t read his thoughts.
I thought I kept myself well before, can she ready my mine? No, she’s not like Queenie
“(Y/n)?...love whats wrong?” His voice was so calm and caring, worry was very evident in his oh so adorable and handsome features. You almost cried on the spot, seeing how he was so caring of you even when he was struggling himself.You had to tell him.
“Newt, I can read your mind.”
She can read my mind? His face looked confused again.
“Yes I can read your mind. I’ve been able to since this morning when you found me in the case.”
Newt stood there at a lost for words, well, not really since his mind was running ad hundreds of miles per hour. You could barley keep up with them as they flew by.
She can read my-this morning that why she knew i was there-oh no she must know how they moon calves tipped me over-BREAKFAST THE LIBRARY THE SHOWER O MERLINS BEARD I-
“NEWT! PLEASE!” Your somewhat cry and plead finally pulled newt out of his own mind. The poor wizard looked like he didn’t know what to do with himself. “I just..I..” He stumbled a bit and sat himself down onto the love seat that was set in the room, squeezing his own hands over and over again until they turned white and his eyes darted around the room, completely avoiding you.
Carefully, you took small steps towards the shaken man, kneeling down in front of him while making sure to leave some space. You remember Newt teaching you that when a creature feels threatened or confused, it’s best to lower your level to them when you keep eye contact and that you don’t make sudden movements...based on the animal...and Newt isn’t an animal..so...
She’s doing what I taught her last winter..
He visibly relaxes, and your small smile shows him you aren’t upset, or angered. He still won’t meet your eyes.
“Yes, I am. I was taught by an amazing man who is very smart, and very capable.”
Not so sure...
“Newt darling, I hope you remember that I can still read your mind.” That quickly snapped Newt back again. Thought it took a moment since his mouth would open and close, trying to form something to say.
“Why didn’t you tell me sooner?” His voice was quiet, but it didn’t sound upset.
You looked down at the folded hands in your lap, feeling a bit shameful that you hadn’t told him sooner. “Well, at first I didn’t know I was reading your mind. And..when I did I thought I would be bale to figure it out before it got too trouble some. I was going to tell you at breakfast this morning...but..then I heard all those things you were saying to yourself.”
Letting Newt process what you said, you slowly lifted yourself off from the floor and moved to sit onto the love seat, leaving space again.
“You heard everything?” He sounded so broken, it shattered your heart.
“I did.”
“Then....you know..”
You know how I feel about you.
“I do”
Honesty was what kept you two together as friends for so long, why stop it now? “I also know how you feel about yourself. What..what happened Newt?” Newt flinched when you asked that question. His mind was surprisingly blank. “I usually am doing better. But some days all it takes is one small mishap and everything after feels much worse then it might really be..”
He took a deep breath, his hands becoming even whiter under the stress. “It feels like an avalanche that I can’t stop. The past year is when...I uh, started to realize that what I’ve felt for you was more than just a close friendship..” You looked down at your own hands, hoping Newt would continue on. “Ever since L-Leta...I thought that maybe I had ruined being able to...well, date you. So I was more than w-willing to become friends again.”
Taking a chance, you reach out a hand to him. You watched as Newt carefully lets his hand go to reach yours, pulling it into his lap as he runs his thumbs over your knuckles. “For a while, I thought maybe what I was feeling was just f-friendship, and with that you’ve helped me grow again...” He swallowed and took a deep breath again. “But recently..I’ve come to realize that maybe without you...I would be nothing...and..and that I would go back to being who I was.”
Without thinking, you leaned over and wrapped your free arm around Newt, he instantly fell into you, burying his head into your neck as you felt him start to break down.
It was at this moment that you realized that in reality, you both were just like the kids back in Hogwarts. The feeling that Newt had were not ones that would go away so easily. “I-I just I-I know that I love you...(y/n) I love you and I’m s-so s-sorry..” It’s been a while since you’ve held a crying Newt, but it isn’t something you would hush away from. No, you would he there for him when he needed it most.
“Shhh..shh my darling, you don’t need to say sorry..you’ve done nothing wrong..” not caring that your shirt was dampening, you ran your fingers through his curly hair. You could feel him relax against you as he continued to let the tears fall down his face. “You are so strong, and so brave. I know that even if I wasn’t there you would push through. Not just for yourself but for your animals. I know you Newt, and you know you...even when you feel week.” His grip was tight on you which you don’t mind. You adjusted your seating so Newt could lay down more comfortably, still running your fingers across his scalp.
“Newton Artemis Fido Lurch Scamander. The greatest Magi zoologist of all time, a gorgeous and beautiful human being. A mummy to the best creatures.”
I hope so.
“Not just my best friend, but someone I trust with my life, and, some that loves you very much my Newton.”
Love?
“Yes, Love you very silly wizard.” You hear a small chuckle which made you smile. “And do you want to know the best part?”
Yes.
“I will always love you, no matter what. I love all of you. The confident Newt Scamander as he goes to save a Horned Sea Cow, and the still just as amazing Newt Scamander now. Even if you don’t realize it. You are still him. Maybe a little sad...a little broken...but you are still him, and he is still you.” When you look down, you see his had stopped crying. He’s relaxed and his eyes are half lidded.
“What am I going to do (y/n)?” It took you a moment to register that this wasn’t a thought and an actual question leaving his lips.
“Well, as much as we love each other and confessed our feelings, you need to get some rest and think about what you want to do. I learned that the farther away I am from you, the harder it is to hear your thoughts. So maybe while you’re resting up I can go in and check up on your babies?”
Newt just shook his head, trying to sit himself up with your help since being a bit long limits his movements in such a small space next to you. “They are my creatures and it is my responsibility to take care of them. I feel that being with them will help me...no offence to your good suggestion love...” He hesitated calling you with his name he’s kept, but when you smiled he felt some weight lifted off of him.
“You know yourself the best. That’s what’s important.” You watched as Newt stood up and rub his face, relaxing his body. You were about to stand when you noticed he held a hand out toward you, offering to help you up with his signature lop sides grin.

Taking his hand, you stood up and moved to straighten out his shirt.
The silence between you two now wasn’t so awkward. It was just left with little peaces of the puzzle that needed to be placed in.
“Well, I’ll leave you to it. I can go on and leave today if you’d like me too?” You knew that at times like this, people needed space. You felt a little lost yourself, not really knowing what to do.
“I think it would be best for today.” You felt your heart break a little. Sure you were the one to suggest it. But for some reason there was still a small pull at your heart.
“But please don’t think I dislike you..or anything like that...I just think you’re right about how I need to think everything over and find myself.”
You lifted your hand up to lightly cup Newts face, the wizard pressing his hand into it.
“I’m so proud of you Newt. Know that I’m still here for you and that I love you too. I’ll see you soon my darling.” With those final words, you gently pulled your hand away and made your way through the library. When you were far enough, you accio’d your belongings to you and quietly left the Scamanders home.
Just when you had thought you were out of reach from the Amazing Magi Zoologsist’s mind, you heard his voice that left you with a smile and a mended heart of hope.
