I’m seeing a lot of posts/takes that start out “I simply can’t feel sorry for ScarJo…” and I’m just. like. who’s asking you to feel sorry for her? who’s asking for sympathy? nobody’s asking you to open your hearts, let alone your wallets. you don’t have to feel anything positive for her at all. legal right doesn’t require sympathy.
the question at hand is not “is scarjo a poor pitiable victim,” the question is “does Disney, as a corporate entity, have an obligation to fulfill its contracts, carry out its obligations, and keep its promises” and, yes? the answer is absolutely yes? your feelings on scarjo as a person should have absolutely zero bearing on the answer to this question
if anything it’s Disney who’s asking for pity, for sympathy, to be let off from having to do things it doesn’t want to do because its life is just so haaaaaard right now with the pandemic, and you know what? I simply can’t feel sorry for disney.
I looked her up.
It gets worse.
SHE DIED BECAUSE OF A MISFIRE THAT MAY NOT HAVE ACTUALLY BEEN A MISFIRE.
The actual target was the building behind her home. Two missiles of 24 missed, striking her home, killing her, her husband, and their housekeeper, and blinding their daughter.
This by itself would be tragic and inexcusable. But it goes a step further:
Her house was previously destroyed in American bombings in 1991. In protest, she used pieces of it to make a mosaic on the floor of the al-Rashid Hotel in Baghdad. The mosaic was of George H.W. Bush (who would have ordered those bombings), and the intention was that nobody would be able to enter the hotel without stepping on his face, which is a massive insult in Iraq. (Anybody else remember the hero who threw his shoes at Bush II?) It was a piece of protest art. Something supposedly protected and enshrined in American values and law.
And there are rumors that the “misfire” was deliberate, and was retaliation for the mosaic.
George W. Bush, H.W.’s son, ordered the mosaic removed when American troops captured Baghdad in 2003.
By the way, if you want to say “FUCK the Bushes and also Clinton for this,” then don’t let the memory of this piece of art die:
Spread it like the wind through the trees.
The most impressive communal shitpost I’ve yet seen from a linguistics Facebook group
YES. Then there’s this gem:
yknow it would be really nice if everyone into like cryptic culture and ~cottagecore~ and all that actually like....gave a shit abt appalachia
like i people don't INTEND to commodify or sensationalize us, but every time i see people hyping up cryptids i always get the unpleasant reminder that people only care abt my state for ~mothman~ or to conveniently stereotype in debates abt gun control. please please if you have spent any time learning abt cryptids, also learn abt wv coal miners, who work a dying industry because it's the only job a cycle of Incredible poverty makes accessible to them, have had absolutely no protections against COVID enforced, despite not only working in incredibly cramped, dangerous positions, but Already being at high risk for respiratory diseases like black lung. learn abt the governor who was reelected in the midst of all the other major politics last year, the only millionaire in west virginia, who at one point owed 7 billion dollars in fines for mine safety violations that he still hasn't paid and whose family STILL owns most mines in the state.
that's just two things! in one state!!! the opioid epidemic and the steady defending of education and the absolutely abysmal conditions that people live in across appalachia are staggering in their weight. if you love cryptid culture i am begging you, please please love and care for and talk abt the people who created it and keep it going.
if you have ever bought merchandise abt how much u love the flatwoods monster or w/ever, please please also consider supporting one of these organizations (these are mostly wv-centered because it's where i live, i encourage ppl from other states to add links if they have them!):
Holler Health Justice, a queer BIPOC-led nonprofit that provides access to abortion, free EC, and other mutual aid across Appalachia
Appalachian Mountain Advocates, which works across Appalachia to shift towards clean energy and end fossil fuels and fracking
Mountain Justice, which works in West Virginia to fight environmental damage, in particular mountain top removal
WV Free, a group that advocates reproductive rights in west virginia
Fairness WV, a group that advocates lgbt+ rights in west virginia
WV Can't Wait, a political group that focuses on helping & promoting candidates across west virginia who want economic change
This is literally the only time on the internet I’ve seen anyone not blame poor people in rural areas for being poor? “They work in coal mines and they’re uneducated, ew” Do you understand how poverty works?? Do you?? Anwyay @pechebeche mad props for sticking up for Appalachia. I have been yelling about it for years but nobody on ANY side of the political balance beam wants to listen.
Ooh I forgot I had resources to share looool
Foxfire - in 1966, a bunch of high school kids in Southern Appalachia (Georgia) created a magazine featuring interviews from their family and community members about Appalachian culture and history. Now, not only has the magazine creation been passed down from generation to generation of high school students, but there’s an entire center and foundation for Foxfire.
What You Are Getting Wrong About Appalachia - don’t read Hillbilly Elegy; read this book instead. It genuinely changed my life and my understanding of this nation. This is a “why didn’t they teach us THIS in school” book filled with important knowledge, defense of minority groups in Appalachia, dispelling of myths... seriously it’s such a good book.
How Half of America Lost Its F***ing Mind - this article is less Appalachia-centric, but it offers a pretty balanced look at why rural counties glowed red in 2016 and 2020 (note: this article was written back in early 2016, when liberals never fully believed Trump would get any votes, but the also liberal author of the article knew more than he thought he did). Again, one of the few articles on the Internet that doesn’t use “uneducated” as an insult.
Gone Home: Race and Roots through Appalachia - this book was filled with interviews from black Americans who grew up in Appalachian coal mining towns. Fair warning, the editing and formatting in this book is fully atrocious, but the information is still insanely valuable!
Also read Appalachian Reckoning, which was written specifically as a response to Hillbilly Elegy
I also highly recommend the podcast Appodlachia!
i think i would rather encounter multiple women who take astrology too seriously over even one guy who genuinely believes in sigma/alpha/beta male bullshit
women who take astrology too seriously:Â hey bestie i made u a star chart
men who believe the s/a/b male bullshit:Â women should be enslaved
Someone give me a fact about history that will make me examine my assumptions about the world
oh my goodness this is fascinating, he was also emperor of the Empire of Mali (which was the world’s largest producer of gold at the time). This was the only artist’s depiction i could find that was done in his lifetime:
and then i got sidetracked by all the modern artist who low highkey want to bang this 14th cent emperor
oh my stars this is so cool. Enheduanna (2285-2250 BCE) was the earliest writer in history whose name we know. She was a high priestess who wrote hymns to the goddess Inanna–who, incidentally, is the oldest deity whose name is still known!

I didn’t get to quit a sport when I wanted to and now I have a spinal cord injury.
Quitting is FINE. Quitting is GOOD. Quit if you need to. Hell, quit if you want to!
A lot of people will say "quit while you're ahead" when it benefits THEM, but then turn around and say "quitters never win" and "quitting makes you a sore loser" to those who DO choose to stop. Simone Biles has nothing to prove to anybody. She is one of, if not THE, greatest gymnasts of our time-- possibly of All Time (until somebody overtakes her records). She has multiple Gold Medals, multiple World Championship titles, at least 4 skills named after her because she's the ONLY gymnast to ever be able to do them. She's currently going down in history as THE most decorated US Gymnast in history. And yes, she has every goddamn right to quit while she's ahead. Because stepping back and letting her mind and body recover, and supporting her team, means that when she does get back on the mat she'll be ready. Pushing harder during stress and exhaustion could lead to a career-ending or life-ending injury.
Quitting while you're ahead is SAFE. It's IDEAL if it means recovering. Especially when one slip or miscalculation could mean the complete end of her still-early career as a world-class, record-breaking, physics-defying gymnast.
The people shaming her for her decision have only one mindset, one that's already been seen time and time again at the Olympics, and that is "glory or death" and it's so goddamn toxic. Plenty of gymnasts before her never had the choice to say no and paid the price with their bodies, and every single one of them that's still alive is rallying behind her in support of her decision.
Well someone displeased the sky gods didn’t they
My first thought was someone pleased the sky gods, because this is a SHOW.Â
That’s the problem with gods; their pleasure and their wrath often look the same.

why is this fire quote from a tumblr post
imagine waking up, being given a list of reasonable and non-strenous tasks to complete on a schedule and location of your choosing, and afterwards having an adequate number of leisure hours to spend as you see fit, and a comfortable home to relax in (paid for by the fair and satisfactory wages you receive for completing tasks).
i no longer respect the hustle i want universal basic income and dignity for everyone

HEY.
Understanding the Johansson/Disney lawsuit thanks to Twitter wisdom…
Here’s part of Disney’s statement…
Yes. They’re excusing a breach of contract over the pandemic. Oh. So righteous.
And because context is everything…
Some say Johansson made a dick move because Disney is “the hands that feeds her”. I wonder if they’d say the same thing if this was Tom Cruise or Robert Downey Jr or some MAN of the likes.
Last, but not least:
I say: good for her. Go after the mouse. Let it all burn if you have to.
